Do you floss before or after you brush your teeth?

And why? Because I've received conflicting advice from two dentists. (Before is better because it enables tooth paste to get where you flossed away the food bits, after is better because it removes the food bits you've dislodged by brushing.)

So, what do you do and why?

Amateur Darraghmatics (darraghmac), Thursday, 27 August 2009 10:09 (sixteen years ago)

after, because that's always what I was told was when it should be done. I didn't even know some people did it before brushing.

btw, I'm pretty happy with myself for having flossed almost every day for the last 2.5 months, now I only have to keep it up for the next 40-50 years

After brushing, but before using the mouthwash.

After, unless I'm flossing specifically because there's something in my teeth and I want to get it out.

jaymc, Thursday, 27 August 2009 13:14 (sixteen years ago)

Before because it feels more like I'm really accomplishing something.

I do it before, I thought you were supposed to. Makes the brushing more effective?

Trip Maker, Thursday, 27 August 2009 15:42 (sixteen years ago)

I floss after eating, it's not nec connected to brushing. I brush morn and night, but floss after every meal b/c things are always stuck in there.

Before, to loosen any plaque/food/gunk and then I brush it away.

kate78, Thursday, 27 August 2009 16:13 (sixteen years ago)

I don't floss. I have tried on multiple occasions but it always pisses me off too mcuh to try and do my back teeth, or because its never been part of my routine I forget to do it ever again.

morning:
1) floss
2) rinse briefly with anti-gingivitis mouthwash
3) brush
4) rinse again w/ mouthwash

night:
1) brush
2) rinse with mouthwash

should probably flip those but probably won't

Before, because even if I don't floss out everything, I at least dislodge it all (so I presume), which I then finish off by rinsing with water.

before. you're getting the big chunks of plaque out and then you brush the rest away.

the fact that after is the standard is a fucking tragedy and why i hate people

The Great Southern Pusskill (latebloomer), Thursday, 3 September 2009 06:33 (sixteen years ago)

After: you've dislodged your plaque and brushed it in between your teeth, so you floss and rinse it all away instead of letting it grow and fester there until the next time you floss. :-)

this is a battle that can be settled only one way:

At least we floss. 100% of the people who never flossed before it was invented in 1815 are all dead.

StanM, Thursday, 3 September 2009 07:00 (sixteen years ago)

I'm gonna floss my top teeth before and my bottom teeth after and see which fall out first. Or I might just continue doing neither, stupidly fretting about my poor dental health while doing nothing about it.

ledge, Thursday, 3 September 2009 08:52 (sixteen years ago)

Floss first, always. It's like sweeping before you mop.
