A thread to mark the forthcoming twenty one years of delays, cost overruns, scaling-backs and cancellations. Prove me wrong, Blighty.

I didn't know about it - I thought that feeble bit of channel tunnel track was the best we could do

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 11 March 2010 14:33 (sixteen years ago)

Wouldn't this money be better spent improving the network we've already got?

Maraca Son Sistema (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 March 2010 14:34 (sixteen years ago)

Not really because large chunks of it are at capacity. You can't fit any more trains between London, Birmingham and Manchester without building more lines. We just spent the last 15 years improve the WCML to max it out capacity wise and there is no more room.

Incidentally the Old Oak Common station idea is monumentally stupid, either go to heathrow properly or avoid the expense of heading southwest to OOC.

this is what should be happening around Heathrow:

(Although with Heathrow south of the Great Western Main Line Rather than moving it to Greenford)

I like how 'London' and 'North Britain' are less prominent than Chalvey

Pretty close I think - there's a massive area of goods yards, sidings and small unused parks by East Acton station that I presume is earmarked for the station. Also, I take it from the plans that Heathrow is to remain a curse upon the land forever.

I presume the thinking is that it sits on the the disused

So nearer to Acton Mainline and probably should be called Wormwood Scrubs

not a lot of hs2 chat on ilx I noticed. after a rather long Facebook debate today I thought I'd revive and ask what ilxors think. Seems that it's plagued with controversy and both the Greens and UKIP are dead against it and call it a vanity project and a massive waste of time and resources. But surely with a growing population and an ever-crowded capital we could do with getting around the country a bit quicker and easier, right? Right?
