Inspired by the Good books on the philosophy of science? thread: What are your favorite contemporary works of Continental philosophy, and who are your favorite contemporary Continental philosophers? To clarify, by "contemporary" I mean people who are still writing and publishing now. So this isn't the place to discuss Derrida, Foucault, etc.
To begin, here's a slightly modified version of something I just posted to the Good books on the philosophy of science? thread:
... I will unreservedly and enthusiastically recommend Gr4h4m H4rm4n's Pr1nce of Networks, esp. if you're interested in contemporary "Continental" philosophy. H4rm4n is a realist philosopher who builds upon Latour, his own idiosyncratic interpretation of He1degger, and Le1bniz, among other thinkers. In this book, he spends the first half on his interpretation of Latour, and the second half discussing the relevance of Latour's work to H4rm4n's own object-or1ented onto1ogy. Fantastic. It's available for free in .pdf form at the publisher's website (just Google the title). Although, of course, you should purchase a copy of the high-quality paperback and support the author and publisher!

Should've left that ungoogleproofed -- Zizek would be a riot on ILX.

I wonder what he would have to say about Grizzly Bear.
― kshighway, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 00:04 (sixteen years ago)
Z already put out one book in the Spring and has two more coming in the fall.

I mentioned this on the Zizek thread, but I'm taking a class with him and Av1t4l R0n3ll starting next week. <3
― Mordy, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 00:39 (sixteen years ago)
I just saw Examined Life, and R0n3ll was great in it! That class sounds amazing. What it's on? (I'm assuming you're an EGS student?)
― kshighway, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 00:42 (sixteen years ago)
I'm at Tisch and taking it in the German Dpt. The course is Philosophy + Language: Hegel, Freud & Literature
― Mordy, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 00:44 (sixteen years ago)
Destroy: zizek (sorry)
what counts as contemporary?
I'd say search: niklas luhmann, Soren brier, John deely, humberto maturana...
― ryan, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 00:45 (sixteen years ago)
Oh wow, Morday. That sounds incredible.
Ryan, why don't you like Zizek?
― kshighway, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 00:47 (sixteen years ago)
Simon Critchley!
― ryan, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 00:48 (sixteen years ago)
That was an xpost! (I'll try to answer that later when I'm not on my phone)
― ryan, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 00:49 (sixteen years ago)
I wanna see Examined Life! (torrent?)
― Mordy, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 00:52 (sixteen years ago)
Oh shit. I read Infinitely Demanding last winter, and I thought he had some good ideas although I disagree with his political stance.
He and Z had an interesting public quarrel: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_Critchley#The_Critchley-Zizek_Debate
― kshighway, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 00:52 (sixteen years ago)
Gianni vattimoRoberto Espositoagamben (kinda)
― ryan, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 00:53 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah I disagree with alot of these dudes (except maye luhmann) but I justjudge quality based on how interesting they are. Critchley's "very little, almost nothing" is a favorite of mine.

Mordy, here you go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9o3UoG2KlW0
Just click on the video under "Video Responses" to get to part 2, 3, etc., etc.
When you finish watching it, let me know what you think!
Major takeaway from the film: Cornell West is amazing and that the philosophy documentary is a highly interesting genre, esp. in cases such as this one and the Z film where Taylor's trying to make a film for a general audience.

Stanley cavell! (ok sorry I'll stop now)
― ryan, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 00:59 (sixteen years ago)
C4v3ll and other post-L3vin4s narrative ethics people have always annoyed me -- always a little too pretty.
― Mordy, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 01:01 (sixteen years ago)
Michael serres
I've heard his name mentioned several times now; think it's time for me to look into him a bit more.
― kshighway, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 01:14 (sixteen years ago)
The Parasite was just published in a new edition and features an introduction from my dissertation advisor!
― ryan, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 01:17 (sixteen years ago)
Oh wow, there your advisor is. He's putting out a book this fall, too? I'm v. interested in posthum4n1sm, so I think I'll check it out.
Incidentally, apparently I had already placed the Serres book on the posthumanism wishlist I created for myself on Amazon. Excellent.
― kshighway, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 01:22 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah he just turned the manuscript this past weekend in fact.
― ryan, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 01:24 (sixteen years ago)
Ryan, if you don't mind my asking, what are you writing your dissertation on?
― kshighway, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 01:40 (sixteen years ago)
Kind of a genealogy of American philosophy and the theme of "self-reference" from Edwards and Emerson to Peirce--and try to triangulate Peirce with Luhmann (second-order cybernetics) and Derrida. Sounds fancier than it is!
