lol what timing, i've just spent an entire week pretty much debating and promoting a maybe slightly more civil british version of this

They are known for contracting the ugliest players, like Kuyt (country matters), Wednesday, 2 September 2009 00:45 (fifteen years ago)

Is it worth reading?

kshighway, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 00:50 (fifteen years ago)

it was a protest camp, not a book

Did you read the book I originally posted about?

kshighway, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 00:55 (fifteen years ago)

no i did not, but given burgeoning political principles, i probably will

dan m, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 01:25 (fifteen years ago)

i thought this was going to be about right-wing resistance to socialism, because that's the kind of talk i've been hearing lately..."i am a patriot and will take up arms against tyranny as necessary," etc...but it looks like kinda the opposite maybe? hard to tell from that description.

Maria, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 01:32 (fifteen years ago)

Apparently somebody blogged their own translation of the whole book

http://linsqv.blogspot.com/

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 01:35 (fifteen years ago)

Maria it looks like Glenn Beck & his ilk have been urging the right to read it so that they can familiarize themselves with the Enemy.

“I AM WHAT I AM.” My body belongs to me. I am me, you are you, and it’s not going too well. Mass personalization. Individualization of all conditions – of life, work, misery. Diffuse schizophrenia. Rampant depression. Atomization into fine paranoiac particles. Hysterics upon contact. The more I want to be Me, the more I feel an emptiness. The more I express myself the more I dry up. The more I run after it, the more tired out I get. I hang onto it, you hang onto it; we cling to our “I” like a tedious bureaucratic window-job. We’ve become our own representatives in a strange commerce, guarantors of a personalization that in the end looks a lot like an amputation. We insure ourselves all the way to bankruptcy, with a more or less disguised clumsiness.

chip dumstorf, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 03:41 (fifteen years ago)

finally somebody said it

chip dumstorf, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 03:41 (fifteen years ago)

chip dumstorf, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 03:41 (fifteen years ago)

That's from someone's LiveJournal right?

kshighway, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 03:42 (fifteen years ago)

Until the "it’s not going too well" part I thought this was some Walt Whitman shit: "My body belongs to me. I am me, you are you, and it’s not going too well."

kshighway, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 03:42 (fifteen years ago)

just kidding this is some tyler durden horse puckey

Chuck P. was doing a reading in Boston once and the entrance fee was $27.

kshighway, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 03:44 (fifteen years ago)

For a book reading.

kshighway, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 03:44 (fifteen years ago)

smashing capitalism and fruit in one fell swoop

chip dumstorf, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 03:53 (fifteen years ago)

While the Sledge-O-Matic act works as an example of physical prop comedy, Gallagher frequently uses this portion of his act as a criticism of American consumer culture. The act itself is a parody of ads for kitchen gadgets such as Ginsu knives that permeated the American television airwaves during non-primetime hours in the late 1970s. (See Wikiquotes for the traditional introduction to the Sledge-O-Matic sequence.)

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 03:55 (fifteen years ago)

I had no idea that dude disliked consumerism. I just googled "dude smashing watermelon" or something equally ridiculous.

kshighway, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 03:56 (fifteen years ago)

gallagher gets a lot of shit from the squares but he's got genuine red cred

chip dumstorf, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 03:57 (fifteen years ago)

yeah honestly this is the first ive heard of it too

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 03:57 (fifteen years ago)

that's from the book you just bought and started a thread about fyi

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 04:09 (fifteen years ago)

Hoos, what Badiou should I read first? Concept of the Model looks impenetrable.

kshighway, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 04:10 (fifteen years ago)

that's from the book you just bought and started a thread about fyi

I know. I am now more skeptical.

fyi kshighway badiou is just about the most retarded and gay of all contemporary french philosophers so only read him if u want to be really embarrassed 30 yrs from now

kshighway, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 04:12 (fifteen years ago)

Thanks for the warning, max. I will be sure to stay away from the guy who might be the most well-respected contemporary continental philosopher still working.

kshighway, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 04:13 (fifteen years ago)

lol dont say i didnt warn u

and frankly i think people only take badiou seriously because they're bored but i have hella fun reading him

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 04:17 (fifteen years ago)

lol xp

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 04:17 (fifteen years ago)

Thanks, Hoos. I read Feltham's intro book a year or two ago, but haven't looked at anything else except the interview at the end of Concept of the Model. I'm thinking of starting with Hallward's book, maybe, then going on to an introductory book like Infinite Thought, then go through from Concept of the Model to, well, Pocket Pantheon. Should take me, oh, years.

kshighway, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 04:18 (fifteen years ago)

i recommend reading the celestine prophecy instead

fleetwood (max), Wednesday, 2 September 2009 04:19 (fifteen years ago)

Still working through The Secret, but I'll add it to the list.

chip dumstorf, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 04:20 (fifteen years ago)

my favorite badiou book was always "tuesdays with morrie"

fleetwood (max), Wednesday, 2 September 2009 04:20 (fifteen years ago)

His sophomore effort, Eat, Pray, Love, is far better on the whole carpe diem thing.

kshighway, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 04:21 (fifteen years ago)

chip dumstorf, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 04:25 (fifteen years ago)
