Is it worth reading?

― dan m, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 01:25 (fifteen years ago)
i thought this was going to be about right-wing resistance to socialism, because that's the kind of talk i've been hearing lately..."i am a patriot and will take up arms against tyranny as necessary," etc...but it looks like kinda the opposite maybe? hard to tell from that description.
― Maria, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 01:32 (fifteen years ago)
Apparently somebody blogged their own translation of the whole book

Maria it looks like Glenn Beck & his ilk have been urging the right to read it so that they can familiarize themselves with the Enemy.

“I AM WHAT I AM.” My body belongs to me. I am me, you are you, and it’s not going too well. Mass personalization. Individualization of all conditions – of life, work, misery. Diffuse schizophrenia. Rampant depression. Atomization into fine paranoiac particles. Hysterics upon contact. The more I want to be Me, the more I feel an emptiness. The more I express myself the more I dry up. The more I run after it, the more tired out I get. I hang onto it, you hang onto it; we cling to our “I” like a tedious bureaucratic window-job. We’ve become our own representatives in a strange commerce, guarantors of a personalization that in the end looks a lot like an amputation. We insure ourselves all the way to bankruptcy, with a more or less disguised clumsiness.

While the Sledge-O-Matic act works as an example of physical prop comedy, Gallagher frequently uses this portion of his act as a criticism of American consumer culture. The act itself is a parody of ads for kitchen gadgets such as Ginsu knives that permeated the American television airwaves during non-primetime hours in the late 1970s. (See Wikiquotes for the traditional introduction to the Sledge-O-Matic sequence.)
― ice cr?m, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 03:55 (fifteen years ago)
I had no idea that dude disliked consumerism. I just googled "dude smashing watermelon" or something equally ridiculous.

lol xp
Thanks, Hoos. I read Feltham's intro book a year or two ago, but haven't looked at anything else except the interview at the end of Concept of the Model. I'm thinking of starting with Hallward's book, maybe, then going on to an introductory book like Infinite Thought, then go through from Concept of the Model to, well, Pocket Pantheon. Should take me, oh, years.
