Rental loft which is technically a studio (one big room), but set up like a 2 bedroom.

Jaq, Sunday, 6 September 2009 04:49 (fifteen years ago)

Standalone house, which isnt as fancy as it sounds, as it's a tiny 2 bedroom miner's cottage with a more modern rear extenson and the peeniest galley kitchen I've ever had to suffer using :( I had more floorspace in my old apartment! Still its a nice house and has a nice big courtyard out back :D Looking fwd to summer breakfasts and BBQs outside v much <3

i used to have a 2-bedroom house. for $400 a month. those were the days.

1BR apartment. When my girlfriend and I were planning on moving in together, we were considering a 2BR (since it probably still would've saved money compared to the separate 1BRs we had) -- but we kind of fell in love with this place, which has plenty of room as it is.

1 Bed Room Apartment

('flat' in London - when I used the word 'apartment' amongst family, one of them said to me forcefully 'who the hell do you think you are?' - as if using the word 'apartment' was trying to give myself status beyond my lowly station in life.

Bob Six, Sunday, 6 September 2009 13:40 (fifteen years ago)

We rent a row house which is hilarious if you read "row" to rhyme with "now".

Relatin' Jews to Jazz (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 6 September 2009 13:41 (fifteen years ago)

3 bedroom standalone house shared w/ two others. pretty standard practice for 20 somethings in this city. I have live in terrace (row) houses, but never an apartment.

I live in a 2 bed ground floor flat in a converted Edwardian terraced house.

Colonel Poo, Sunday, 6 September 2009 15:45 (fifteen years ago)

1 bedroom flat. Mine all mine. Well, at least as far as the loo, the rest of it belongs to the bank. But still.

Would love to sell it and buy a 2-bedroom standalone house somewhere OUT FAR AWAY in the country but I think that the London property market is still too collapsed to dream of that for a while yet.

The building is a semi-detached. It's a brit thing.

Evren Kader (Masonic Boom), Sunday, 6 September 2009 19:28 (fifteen years ago)

Mine is a large studio with a balcony in the very centre of central London. I'd like a larger place in the same neighbourhood some day, but I'm going to have to earn it. Whatever the case, I can walk to the West End or Shoreditch in about 20 minutes, which is very satisfying at rush hour.

lacoste intolerant (suzy), Sunday, 6 September 2009 19:50 (fifteen years ago)

Edwardian terrace, here

nate woolls, Sunday, 6 September 2009 19:52 (fifteen years ago)

Currently, we're renting two places. My husband lives in a 3 bedroom sublet on Canada's east coast and I live in an attic studio apartment on America's west. I'm waiting for my visa to come through so I can join him. Clicked studio.

kate78, Sunday, 6 September 2009 19:55 (fifteen years ago)

Stand alone home. We are currently house-hunting, and may get another house, but most likely will end up in a townhome. We have lots of space in the house and a fucking awesome backyard, but drugs and alcoholism are pretty bad in our neighborhood and the schools suck.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Sunday, 6 September 2009 19:59 (fifteen years ago)

One bedroom apt. for me and my creatures.

There should be another category for "basement apartment" b/c living in one really is a miserable experience unto itself (been there, done that, will never do again - no matter how tempting the bargain..)

kate78, Sunday, 6 September 2009 20:12 (fifteen years ago)

btw I live in a ~townhome~ and I've begun to get the impression that it isn't a common term? It's a two-story apartment with living space on the ground floor and bedrooms up a flight of stairs.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 6 September 2009 20:16 (fifteen years ago)

A townhouse is also attached to other townhouses, in a row, right?

kate78, Sunday, 6 September 2009 20:18 (fifteen years ago)

I think "townhome" and "loft" are often the same thing, but it depends on the marketing and aesthetics of the development/building. Perhaps the main difference between a townhome and a loft is that the former is often carpeted.

what happened? i am confused. (sarahel), Sunday, 6 September 2009 20:20 (fifteen years ago)

i don't think of townhome and loft as the same at all.

a townhouse does not have to be attached to the other townhouses, but i think it frequently is?

tehresa, Sunday, 6 September 2009 20:21 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, I think you're right ...

what happened? i am confused. (sarahel), Sunday, 6 September 2009 20:22 (fifteen years ago)

Two story standalone house on the side of the only active volcano in the city limits of the USA. Share with 3 other guys but it's a lot of room so we get along fine. Rent is cheap too. Nice view of Portland from our back deck. An owl hoots outside my window at night. Love it here.

Nate Carson, Sunday, 6 September 2009 20:23 (fifteen years ago)

A townhouse in the UK is usually a 3-storey terraced house.

nate woolls, Sunday, 6 September 2009 20:28 (fifteen years ago)

I own (i.e. am buying) a large standalone on maybe 1/3 of an acre. Technically a 3-bedroom but it has 2 baths and an upstairs suite and an outbuilding and a basement bedroom and a trailer. We've had nine people live here before but now we're down to six. My wife and I are realizing that it is probably just too big for us, and I could see selling it sometime in the next decade.

sleeve, Sunday, 6 September 2009 20:47 (fifteen years ago)

i live in a rowhouse. it's very long and narrow.

harbl, Sunday, 6 September 2009 20:49 (fifteen years ago)

townhouse and loft are opposites, i would say

harbl, Sunday, 6 September 2009 20:50 (fifteen years ago)

terraced, row and townhouses are all variations on the same thing. homes attached laterally.

flying squid attack (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 6 September 2009 23:53 (fifteen years ago)

yeah but if you say you live in a townhouse i would think that means your dwelling unit has an upstairs and a downstairs. if you live in a rowhouse that just describes the kind of building it is. so a townhouse is usually a rowhouse, and a loft can be inside a rowhouse too.

harbl, Sunday, 6 September 2009 23:57 (fifteen years ago)

for whatever reason, when I see the phrase "terrace house" I think of somethng like this:

harbl, Monday, 7 September 2009 00:21 (fifteen years ago)

ah i guess in nyc that's a neighborhood, not a public housing project

Townhouses here tend to be the modern upstairs/downstairs kind, sometimes semi detatched, sometimes standalone, it is a bit of a vague term though. I suppose in general it applies to "compact housing for high density area".

4 bedroom apartment in a stand-alone house...we basically rent the house, except that there's an empty studio apartment in back that could theoretically also be occupied. It's a lot of unrelated people for one place, but we have tons of space.

2BR/1BA flat in a walk up, shared with ILXor Mr. Que. If I could choose between one more BA and one more BR that would be a tough call; another BA would be handy when we have house guests, but Mr. Que has posession of the 2nd room and I have no room of my own, which gives me the envy sometimes.

Two bedroom flat in a street that looks like it's made up of one-hundred-year-old terraced houses, but actually half of them are flats (not converted to flats - they were built like that and have their own front doors).
