Of the 25 I've seen, The Searchers

Haven't see L'Atalante, The Passion of Joan of Arc, Grand Illusion, The General, Persona or Andrei Rublev. Of the ones I've seen (and they all seem pretty great) I'd have to say my least favorites are Some Like It Hot, Psycho, and It's A Wonderful Life.

Blade Runner, so boring

It's a Wonderful Life, Casablanca, the Bicycle Thieves, Modern Times are all obv. very entertaining, but there are so many 'better' films, its untrue

apocalypse now edges out lawrence of arabia (neither is a bad film)

either one of those. feel like voting for Jules et Jim (love Truffaut but this one was very dissapointing) on the other hand it has some magical moments. i generally HATEHATEHATE epics like Lawrence of Arabia.

yeah, cinematography of Lawrence is great but Lean in epic mode is a chore for me, like his more "human" scaled films

Taxi Driver, never really understood what's so great about it. 2001 is my least favourite of Kubrick's major works, but at least it has some groovy visuals.

i can't decide between eight-and-a-half and apocalypse now. the latter is some horrible coked-up attempt at profundity; the former has maybe the greatest gap between rep and what it actually achieves, though i think i'd probably not mind it if i saw it again

Pretty sure the worst is one of the ones I haven't seen yet, like Seven Samurai or La Strada, but since I voted Hitchcock in the other poll, I'll vote for him here too to even the scales: North By Northwest. Dishonorable mentions go to Casablanca and Raging Bull, tho.

As I said on the other thread Apocalypse Now seems to me to the be the one least worthy of inclusion (I'm assuming that the version of Bladerunner listed is the de-voice-overed directors cut which is also a pretty weird choice, but at least has an ending that doesn't feel completely slap-dash.)

Apocalypse Now, followed by Blade Runner. Others I would just describe as "way too high": the first Godfather, 8½, Lawrence, Taxi Driver, Some Like It Hot, Sunset Blvd, The Night of the Hunter, La Dolce Vita, Jules et Jim, The Searchers.

Either Raging Bull or Taxi Driver. Scorcese is one of the most consistently overrated directors ever. I don't hate his stuff, but I'm rarely very impressed by it and it never really stays with me.

I'm not sure what people don't like about Taxi Driver. Plot, acting, cinematography, music were all incredible, I thought. It's my favorite Scorcese movie.

as discussed before, A Wonderful Life works a lot better if you just pretend George dies.

I just find it hard to get past the unamusing boringness of every other scene that doesn't involve a crop-duster.

i suppose at the end of the day i have no use for as many canonical records as films (proportionally speaking) but i think it's way easier for a record to succeed on its own terms if only because the degree of collaboration required is so much lower.

what about Psycho? Despite the innovative camera work and generally high level of tension, its writing/acting is overwrought and the hokey Freudian plot twist at the end is silly imo. I much prefer NBNW. Vertigo is in my top two or three favorite films on the list, though

the plot twist isn't my problem, it's that they waste ten minutes at the end explaining the plot twist that any idiot could have gotten anyway

of what I've seen almost everything on this list is pretty great but even so I wouldn't really rate Some Like It Hot or Night of the Hunter over Apocalypse Now (also fairly certain I would hate Andrei Rublev)
