Andrei Rublev vs. L'avventura vs. The Searchers

iatee, Monday, 7 September 2009 07:25 (fifteen years ago)

ok worst and least fave Taxi Driver

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 7 September 2009 07:28 (fifteen years ago)

i don't think 5, 6 or 7 are top ten worthy at all.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Monday, 7 September 2009 07:31 (fifteen years ago)

8½ easily.

abanana, Monday, 7 September 2009 07:37 (fifteen years ago)

Of the 25 I've seen, The Searchers

Dorian (Dorianlynskey), Monday, 7 September 2009 07:52 (fifteen years ago)

Haven't see L'Atalante, The Passion of Joan of Arc, Grand Illusion, The General, Persona or Andrei Rublev. Of the ones I've seen (and they all seem pretty great) I'd have to say my least favorites are Some Like It Hot, Psycho, and It's A Wonderful Life.

Dan S, Monday, 7 September 2009 07:59 (fifteen years ago)

Blade Runner, so boring

It's a Wonderful Life, Casablanca, the Bicycle Thieves, Modern Times are all obv. very entertaining, but there are so many 'better' films, its untrue

Ward Fowler, Monday, 7 September 2009 08:00 (fifteen years ago)

apocalypse now edges out lawrence of arabia (neither is a bad film)

velko, Monday, 7 September 2009 08:22 (fifteen years ago)

Citizen Kane
2001: A Space Odyssey
Lawrence of Arabia
Jules et Jim

either one of those. feel like voting for Jules et Jim (love Truffaut but this one was very dissapointing) on the other hand it has some magical moments. i generally HATEHATEHATE epics like Lawrence of Arabia.

Ludo, Monday, 7 September 2009 08:24 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, cinematography of Lawrence is great but Lean in epic mode is a chore for me, like his more "human" scaled films

velko, Monday, 7 September 2009 08:28 (fifteen years ago)

2001 barf

cozwn (webinar), Monday, 7 September 2009 08:41 (fifteen years ago)

I never liked Rear Window (and haven't seen half the list.)

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Monday, 7 September 2009 08:41 (fifteen years ago)

lawrence of arabia. just your standard "epic" film.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Monday, 7 September 2009 09:00 (fifteen years ago)

Taxi Driver, never really understood what's so great about it. 2001 is my least favourite of Kubrick's major works, but at least it has some groovy visuals.

arguing on the internet is so much easier these days

thomp, Monday, 7 September 2009 10:02 (fifteen years ago)

i can't decide between eight-and-a-half and apocalypse now. the latter is some horrible coked-up attempt at profundity; the former has maybe the greatest gap between rep and what it actually achieves, though i think i'd probably not mind it if i saw it again

thomp, Monday, 7 September 2009 10:04 (fifteen years ago)

Pretty sure the worst is one of the ones I haven't seen yet, like Seven Samurai or La Strada, but since I voted Hitchcock in the other poll, I'll vote for him here too to even the scales: North By Northwest. Dishonorable mentions go to Casablanca and Raging Bull, tho.

boring movies are the most boring (Eric H.), Monday, 7 September 2009 11:39 (fifteen years ago)

glad to see I'm not the only one with active dislike for 8 1/2

we like cars, we like cartoons (dyao), Monday, 7 September 2009 11:56 (fifteen years ago)

As I said on the other thread Apocalypse Now seems to me to the be the one least worthy of inclusion (I'm assuming that the version of Bladerunner listed is the de-voice-overed directors cut which is also a pretty weird choice, but at least has an ending that doesn't feel completely slap-dash.)

Alex in SF, Monday, 7 September 2009 13:09 (fifteen years ago)

The Searchers or 8 1/2.

My life is butthurt so badly (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 7 September 2009 13:13 (fifteen years ago)

Apocalypse Now, followed by Blade Runner. Others I would just describe as "way too high": the first Godfather, 8½, Lawrence, Taxi Driver, Some Like It Hot, Sunset Blvd, The Night of the Hunter, La Dolce Vita, Jules et Jim, The Searchers.

A Patch on Blazing Saddles (Dr Morbius), Monday, 7 September 2009 13:22 (fifteen years ago)

Vertigo.

Whoops, wrong thread!

"Apocalypse Now, followed by Blade Runner."

Holy shit! Is this the first time Morbs and I have actually agreed on something. ;)

Alex in SF, Monday, 7 September 2009 13:32 (fifteen years ago)

no, we both hate Strange Days and sticking one's hand into a trash compactor.

A Patch on Blazing Saddles (Dr Morbius), Monday, 7 September 2009 13:35 (fifteen years ago)

NO

iatee, Monday, 7 September 2009 21:18 (fifteen years ago)

I think it's not entirely impossible that 2001 wins both polls

iatee, Monday, 7 September 2009 21:21 (fifteen years ago)

Either Raging Bull or Taxi Driver. Scorcese is one of the most consistently overrated directors ever. I don't hate his stuff, but I'm rarely very impressed by it and it never really stays with me.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Monday, 7 September 2009 21:27 (fifteen years ago)

I agree, but my dislike of It's a Wonderful Life eclipses all

what happened? i am confused. (sarahel), Monday, 7 September 2009 21:28 (fifteen years ago)

watched sunset blvd recently - dont think its the worst, but def overrated imo

johnny crunch, Monday, 7 September 2009 21:31 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not sure what people don't like about Taxi Driver. Plot, acting, cinematography, music were all incredible, I thought. It's my favorite Scorcese movie.

I agree with sarahel about It's A Wonderful Life. It was too sentimental for me

Dan S, Monday, 7 September 2009 21:32 (fifteen years ago)

as discussed before, A Wonderful Life works a lot better if you just pretend George dies.

A Patch on Blazing Saddles (Dr Morbius), Monday, 7 September 2009 21:36 (fifteen years ago)

A Patch on Blazing Saddles (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 02:17 (fifteen years ago)

I voted NXNW. It's hard to get past the ridiculousness of the drunk driving scene.

THE MOVIE IS A COMIC FANTASY

I just find it hard to get past the unamusing boringness of every other scene that doesn't involve a crop-duster.

boring movies are the most boring (Eric H.), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 02:19 (fifteen years ago)

i suppose at the end of the day i have no use for as many canonical records as films (proportionally speaking) but i think it's way easier for a record to succeed on its own terms if only because the degree of collaboration required is so much lower.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 9 September 2009 02:20 (fifteen years ago)

"I don't like Ran! Too ponderous."

You are seriously weird.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 9 September 2009 02:23 (fifteen years ago)

eric, do you hate action movies? cause they don't come any better than NBNW.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 02:24 (fifteen years ago)

Eric apparently hates Hitchcock movies where the hero uses potentially lethal circumstances to wryly persuade the blonde to marry him, as opposed to the reverse in Rear Window.

Also, he insists that Cary Grant not be funny.

A Patch on Blazing Saddles (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 02:43 (fifteen years ago)

what about Psycho? Despite the innovative camera work and generally high level of tension, its writing/acting is overwrought and the hokey Freudian plot twist at the end is silly imo. I much prefer NBNW. Vertigo is in my top two or three favorite films on the list, though

Dan S, Wednesday, 9 September 2009 04:05 (fifteen years ago)

the plot twist isn't my problem, it's that they waste ten minutes at the end explaining the plot twist that any idiot could have gotten anyway

k3vin k., Wednesday, 9 September 2009 04:16 (fifteen years ago)

Eric apparently hates Hitchcock movies where the hero uses potentially lethal circumstances to wryly persuade the blonde to marry him, as opposed to the reverse in Rear Window.

Did you hurt your back bending over backward like that?

I like action movies fine. I just think NxNW is more a failed comedy than a successful actioneer.

boring movies are the most boring (Eric H.), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 04:30 (fifteen years ago)

but we've seen what you think are successful comedies!

k3vin k., a studio picture in 1960 needed at least 10 minutes to explain a homicidal man in a dress. You know, OLD DAYS, SO STOOPID.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 24 September 2009 23:14 (fifteen years ago)

North by Northwest 4

weirdest finish imo - it's not my favorite hitchcock. it was on tv the other day and I changed the channel. but worst movie on this list???

iatee, Thursday, 24 September 2009 23:15 (fifteen years ago)

of what I've seen almost everything on this list is pretty great but even so I wouldn't really rate Some Like It Hot or Night of the Hunter over Apocalypse Now (also fairly certain I would hate Andrei Rublev)

man, motherfuck a paddington bear (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 24 September 2009 23:16 (fifteen years ago)

yeah andrei rublev getting no votes is disappointing, spent my vote hoping for a searchers coup, but otherwise woulda voted for that
