Which movies would you recommend if you got $50 if someone likes it very much, but otherwise lose $100

(indifference counts as losing $100, they have to really like it, or at least grudgingly admit it is excellent, but you are at the mercy of their judgment)

hypothetical audience is of ur choosing: y/n?

the audience is any person you might reasonably encounter during the day, but you can't pick who (chosen at random).
(I'm curious what soldiers stationed abroad would put up for their picks -- it could be their army buds, or it could be the local resentful populace -- how would they split the difference?)

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 9 September 2009 17:59 (sixteen years ago)

that's definitely the question.

mountain G.O.A.T. (s1ocki), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 18:00 (sixteen years ago)

my friend's sister's husband recently got back from being stationed abroad. Upon returning he saw 2 girls one cup, and he didn't like it very much.

xp Philip: he said he couldn't watch the whole thing ... obviously one of his fellow soldiers has hypothetically lost $100.

ian, Wednesday, 9 September 2009 18:13 (sixteen years ago)

if that's the case - probably Jackie Brown or American Gangster

March of the Penguins?

(Caveat: I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to anti-Morgan Freeman folks like Shakey Mo Collier)

" anti-Morgan Freeman folks "
Man, I thought Shawshank Redemption would have been a gimme.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 9 September 2009 20:52 (sixteen years ago)

Also, that UHF pick is ballsy, even if you are surrounded by a sea of nerds! I wonder how it would do against the "Jackie Brown or American Gangster" audience.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 9 September 2009 20:57 (sixteen years ago)

I wouldn't expect the average moviegoer to like Jackie Brown, that's a weird choice

Blanket McCulkin (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 21:00 (sixteen years ago)

I'm gonna be gutsy and go with a foreign musical: Umbrellas of Cherbourg.

Fetchboy, Wednesday, 9 September 2009 21:02 (sixteen years ago)

xp Shakey: the question involved someone I might reasonably encounter during my day, those people tend to be hipsters or African Americans.

I was talking about how much I love The Brave Little Toaster the other day (upon seeing a junkyard trash compactor on tv) and then I said something like "it's too bad that the sequels we're such a disgrace to the original". People thought it was funny I took the Brave Little Toaster so seriously but I guess they just don't remember it very well (and it's true they didn't have much if any recollection).

Do people not like Home Alone? It's pretty classic IMO

musically, Thursday, 10 September 2009 02:32 (sixteen years ago)

It's a kids movie. I don't hate kids or everything they like, but the thread question specifies that someone like it "very much".

or have I become completely absurd? (kenan), Thursday, 10 September 2009 02:47 (sixteen years ago)

it's more of a family movie than a kids movie, and i think those kinds of movies are particularly the ones with the greatest mass appeal

musically, Thursday, 10 September 2009 03:17 (sixteen years ago)

the Full Monty, maybe? That was fun.

Police Academy!

Dearth Disco (Trayce), Thursday, 10 September 2009 04:34 (sixteen years ago)

Feels like it has to be a bit of a "lowest common denominator" answer tbh :/

Dearth Disco (Trayce), Thursday, 10 September 2009 04:34 (sixteen years ago)

Ebert's review of Police Academy is classic:

It's really something. It's so bad, maybe you should pool your money and draw straws and send one of the guys off to rent it so that in the future, whenever you think you're sitting through a bad comedy, he could shake his head, and chuckle tolerantly, and explain that you don't know what bad is.

or have I become completely absurd? (kenan), Thursday, 10 September 2009 04:43 (sixteen years ago)

^The reason I would never pick a comedy.

or have I become completely absurd? (kenan), Thursday, 10 September 2009 04:44 (sixteen years ago)

Or at least not a lowbrow, dick-joke comedy. Maybe something darker, or softer, or more "human." Like, you know, Groundhog Day.

or have I become completely absurd? (kenan), Thursday, 10 September 2009 04:45 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah but we're talking not having a choice, getting an average man on the street, they're more bound to want a beer and a haw haw.

OK, I'm generalising wildly, obv.

Dearth Disco (Trayce), Thursday, 10 September 2009 04:53 (sixteen years ago)

how about one where you get in trouble if you admit you don't like it, like Schindler's List

"how about one where you get in trouble if you admit you don't like it, like Schindler's List"
ha this is good strategy!

"getting an average man on the street, they're more bound to want a beer and a haw haw."
some time in the day you will probably meet your peers, too, so you have to factor that into your movie risk profile.

"be gutsy and go with a foreign musical: Umbrellas of Cherbourg."
you should probably get bonus $ for foreign movies.
