Robert Carlyle has told the BBC that director Danny Boyle is 'edging closer' to making Porno, the follow-up to his 1996 hit film Trainspotting.

Carlyle, who played Begbie in the film, said he would "jump through hoops of fire backwards" for the film-maker and would "do Porno tomorrow for nothing."

The novel, by Irvine Welsh, picks up on the same characters 10 years later.

But Ewan McGregor, who played anti-hero Renton, has said in interviews that a sequel would be a "terrible shame".

No full original cast, no cred.

I really wouldn't like them to make this. I don't have any opinion of Trainspotting as a film as I haven't seen it for years but it came out when I was 12 and it was a total sensation in my school, everyone had seen it and everyone liked it. Even though it was set in Edinburgh, a place kids most kids from Lanarkshire hold little affinity for, the fact that a major film was set in Scotland and based round Scottish characters seemed like a big thing at the time. Renton's "It's shite being Scottish" speech really hit the nail on the head too.

and of course the sequel would probably end up being shite and sully the sentimental nostalgic power of the original for me.

Forget filming Porno and just do a movie about Begbie and his family. He's easily the best character that Welsh has created and I think Carlyle is the best actor from the original cast and he'd have no trouble carrying the whole movie.

So the movie would be about an insufferable family with anger issues that yell at each other the whole time, but they have to put up with each other because they're family? I guess it could work.

It would be a bleak comedy that was also a bit of a romp and knowing Boyle, a second act caper. Sounds bloody awful actually.

As I remember it, the book would have been better if he hadn't used characters from Trainspotting and Glue. Cut out all the time he spent referencing those earlier books, and the story would have been shorter - which would have also been a huge plus.

He should do this in the style of a "Carry On" film.
