the cavemen lost me with the billie jean king ad.

lizard FTW. I assumed it was a gecko.

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 11 September 2009 20:12 (sixteen years ago)

Are all the Brits going to pick the lizard to represent for his accent?

CaptainLorax, Friday, 11 September 2009 20:17 (sixteen years ago)

good poll. voted money.

It has come to my attention that Lizard's accent is not British but Australian

CaptainLorax, Saturday, 12 September 2009 06:51 (sixteen years ago)

No. I would never vote for anything with an australian accent. From wikipedia:
Its mascot is a gecko that originally had an American accent but for marketing reasons was changed to a Cockney accent.

mizzell, Saturday, 12 September 2009 13:38 (sixteen years ago)

In the Gecko’s Blog, there’s a post on the accent on April 27:

A lot of people are writing to me asking, “What’s up with your accent?” Some people say I sound like an Aussie from “down under.” (After all, geckos are found all over the world.) Others say it sounds like an East End London, or Cockney, accent. Cockneys are considered working-class inhabitants of London. According to tradition, the strict definition is limited to those born within earshot of the bells of St. Mary-le-Bow, a historic church in the City of London. I think I’d agree that my voice does sound a bit like an East End London accent.

Some of you write to ask why I have an accent. Others want to know why it is that accent. I dunno; I guess everybody has to sound like something. It would certainly be hard to get the word out about GEICO making the “clicking” sound many geckos make. Isn’t it enough that you know a talking gecko, especially one who can help you save on car insurance?

Despite (or maybe because of) the controversy, I seem to be making a lasting impression. As for me, I’m not concerned with geography or nationality. I’ll just continue to “accent” the savings with GEICO!

Now for the record, the Geico Gecko has been voiced by Kelsey Grammar (the stiff English accent), Richard Steven Horvitz (the voice in the Kung Fu Fighting spot), and Dave Kelly (the relaxed British-Aussie accent).

mizzell, Saturday, 12 September 2009 13:43 (sixteen years ago)

Geico Gecko has been voiced by Kelsey Grammar (the stiff English accent)

weird.

Well that gecko always did look like a dark motherfucker with some secrets.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 12 September 2009 14:05 (sixteen years ago)

GOVERNMENT TRASH QUEEN ON A THRONE (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Saturday, 12 September 2009 14:07 (sixteen years ago)

Can't stand that fuckin 3 Doors Down earworm in cavemen ads. (almost as bad as Will.i.am 'singing' Forever Young)

Does Geico pay less for "Somebody's Watching Me" cuz it's credited to whatshisname -- Rockwell? -- even tho Michael Jackson's hook is all anyone ever hears of it now?

A Patch on Blazing Saddles (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 12 September 2009 15:22 (sixteen years ago)

we're voting for the best

CaptainLorax, Saturday, 12 September 2009 16:57 (sixteen years ago)

the lizard, easily

k3vin k., Saturday, 12 September 2009 17:03 (sixteen years ago)

Gecko's Blog? Writing a blog for a CGI gecko whose sole purpose is to sell insurance would be one m'fo'ing difficult job if you ask me. I'd run out of clever ways to say "Geico is your nu god" after about two days.

Aimless, Saturday, 12 September 2009 17:16 (sixteen years ago)

tbh I hate the lizard. he's bland, he's not funny and I can't sympathize with him like the cavemen. a part of the reason why the cavemen are funny is knowing that they are gonna get blasted by the end of commercial with "it's so easy a cavemen can do it". at which point the poor guy does something like this
http://www.adweek.com/adweek/photos/stylus/84354-Geico.jpg

also the WTF factor is great! who cares about car insurance? the lizard does. not the cavemen. they like bowling and tennis. you wouldn't even know it's a car insurance commercial half the time if it wasn't for the last couple seconds.

yeah that Billie Jean King commercial is a big WTF. The geico caveman doesn't even realize he hasn't got a single serve in and then he has the classic line "you might want to take a gander at the 'scoreboard' (in a high pitched voice)". And of course, the cavemen commercial wouldn't be complete without him feeling screwed over. poor guy is a caveman living in a real man world. it doesn't get much better than that

CaptainLorax, Saturday, 12 September 2009 17:34 (sixteen years ago)

also I would never have known about the royksopp - 'remind me' song if it wasn't for those commercials

CaptainLorax, Saturday, 12 September 2009 17:36 (sixteen years ago)

yeah so, was the caveman beating billie jean king in reality and they just were never giving him the points?

Why would Billie Jean King take part in such a corrupt setup?

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 12 September 2009 19:47 (sixteen years ago)

I don't get these commercials..

However regarding Rokysopp "Remind Me" .. when I first saw that ad it had been the first time I heard that song in like 4 years.. I guess you could say it REMINDED ME about that song.

billstevejim, Saturday, 12 September 2009 19:50 (sixteen years ago)

lizard>money>caveman

Zeno, Saturday, 12 September 2009 20:01 (sixteen years ago)

No way. The caveman ad where they ride up on motorcycles kills me.

Adventures of Dog Boy and Frank Sobotka (B.L.A.M.), Saturday, 12 September 2009 21:26 (sixteen years ago)

"I don't get these commercials.. "

not a credible argument in my opinion. has little to do with whether they are entertaining or not

CaptainLorax, Saturday, 12 September 2009 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

I mean -not credible (as an) argument... you were probably just making a statement

CaptainLorax, Saturday, 12 September 2009 23:13 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

Cavemen were pretty funny before they ran it into the ground and tried to make them into an ill-advised TV series. The lizard and the money were never funny.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Thursday, 17 September 2009 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

I genuinely enjoy about 90% of Geico's advertising. That gecko seems like an old friend at this point.

Still not switching insurers though!

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Thursday, 17 September 2009 23:14 (sixteen years ago)

I hate the gecko shit and the cavemen thing got old pretty fast, but having a creepy pile of money staring at you being like "WHY AREN'T YOU TAKING ME" is a pretty genius advertising concept imo.

iatee, Thursday, 17 September 2009 23:22 (sixteen years ago)

otm x 3

Hugh Manatee (WmC), Thursday, 17 September 2009 23:31 (sixteen years ago)

I kind of like the gecko too! I hate the cavemen though. I sort of amazes me that this poll exists and that the cavemen won tbh.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Thursday, 17 September 2009 23:37 (sixteen years ago)

Also, "That gecko seems like an old friend at this point." LOL.

cavemen voters are pure savages imo

frobgs, are you this guy?

I dream about Flo every night. I think about her during the day. I can imagine nailing all her holes. I want to cornhole her so hard that her eyes pop out. I also want Flo to sit on my face so I can work tongue magic on her progressive pussy. God, I hope she is a screamer! I want to make Flo eat the Geico lizzard! A good commercial would be Flo pleasuring herself with the Geico lizzard and talking dirty!
