They don't do storage, but try Wong Family Movers - 718-888-7707. When I had to move stuff out of a storage locker in Queens to my place in south Brooklyn, most of the quotes I was getting were $500-600. They did it for $200. Very quickly, without damaging anything.

i used a storage place on flushing ave near the navy yard, can't remember the name of it but it was run by sephardic jews and it was fine

Tracer Hand, Monday, 14 September 2009 16:49 (sixteen years ago)

dude if you want a new york business who you have never contacted before to "cut you a deal" - that will not happen. you cut yourself a deal by packing it yourself and hiring a man with a van.

I pretty much love this place: http://www.lockawayselfstorage.com/

They're also down across from the Navy Yards, and have the cutest little office with a fishpond outside and fresh-baked cookies made in a toaster oven in the office. They have their own trucks, which you can use for FREE to move your stuff in (altho not to move it out). You just pay insurance and replace the gas you used, make sure to reserve the truck ahead of time, and you're in business. I think the rates are competitive -- maybe not the cheapest, depending on the size of the unit you want, but competitive. And they were extremely helpful.

of course you don't quite get that sex and the city feeling of chatting on your phone while keeping an eye out that the anonymous dudes in jumpsuits don't ding your prized armoire on the way out the door but every decision has tradeoffs

cant move myself cause my knee is injured fyi - also just got my friends to help me move 3 months ago - so now im like fuck it

tracer yr being pretty intolerable here btw - and its pretty reasonable to think that by packaging 2 services together one has a good chance of getting a better deal than by buying those services from two different providers

ice cr?m, Monday, 14 September 2009 16:59 (sixteen years ago)

and yeah duh im going to pack my stuff myself - its the moving and storage as referenced in the thread title i need to hire

ice cr?m, Monday, 14 September 2009 17:00 (sixteen years ago)

Um I picked two un- or underemployed friends/roommates and paid them like $50 each. It's way cheaper than hiring "guys", esp when you throw in the free truck.

i've always seen professional movers as an indulgence unless you've got like a five bedroom house. i'm sure many will disagree.

of course a busted knee changes things. sorry to hear about that, oof.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 14 September 2009 17:03 (sixteen years ago)

laurel's cookie-baking people certainly sound like the way forward!

I have about 25 boxes of books -- I don't move myself anymore. Pro movers make me very happy -- but when I had to move twice in a few months, I couldn't afford pros for BOTH times. Fortunately Lockaway came to the rescue, plus one friend who drove a truck for his job, and was a GENIUS at driving the fully loaded 20'+ behemoth.

ive never hired movers but on the other hand moving is a hueg pain in the ass and i have many boxes of books so im sort of looking forward to it - thx left knee i guess u r good for something after all!

ice cr?m, Monday, 14 September 2009 17:17 (sixteen years ago)

yeah having pro movers is kind of amazing and then all of the sudden you're in this great new place and not exhausted and can go to town setting up etc.

And I find myself shouting... BHOOT!!! BHOOT!!! (tehresa), Monday, 14 September 2009 17:18 (sixteen years ago)

I've always hired two men and then worked as their 3rd person -- exceptions if I have to clean something or hold the door or whatever. But I run up and down the stairs as many times as they do, for the most part. It makes me feel extremely weird to watch people do physical labor for me. Also it shortens the time they take, although check that your movers don't have oh, say, a THREE-HOUR MINIMUM before you try to speed their labors along. :/
