Is it possible to fuck up a meal cooked in a crock pot? I think not.

― tehresa, Sunday, 13 September 2009 04:25 (sixteen years ago)
absolutely love the crock pot. i just got some collard greens in my faux-CSA box and i'm gonna slow-cook them with some blanched bacon.
― Wake OOIOO (get bent), Sunday, 13 September 2009 04:44 (sixteen years ago)
you can make lasagna in your crock pot. just don't cook the noodles first. swear to The God this works.
― iiiijjjj, Sunday, 13 September 2009 04:54 (sixteen years ago)
I've accidentally liquefied beef stew by leaving it in too long.
And you know what? It was still delicious.
― More Butty In Your Pants (Telephone thing), Sunday, 13 September 2009 07:12 (sixteen years ago)
I got one earlier this year, and it is GREAT! Perfect for stews/tagines/braises, doesn't heat up the entire apartment.

You can get one for $20-30. IMO that is a pretty damn good investment.
If you are EXTRA lazy they even sell frozen crockpot meals in the frozen foods section of the grocery. Open bag, put in crockpot, go to work, come home, eat.
― O time thy pyramids (Abbott), Sunday, 13 September 2009 22:03 (sixteen years ago)
that IS a good investment!
do people get nervous leaving them on all day? like i know sometimes ppl would put it on, go to work, and then come home to yum, but is it really safe?
― And I find myself shouting... BHOOT!!! BHOOT!!! (tehresa), Sunday, 13 September 2009 22:05 (sixteen years ago)
I inherited mine, it has a removable pot that you can throw in the dishwasher when you're done. If that costs extra, DO IT.
― ice cr?m paint job (milo z), Sunday, 13 September 2009 22:05 (sixteen years ago)
i should probably use mine one of these days, it just makes ~sense given my schedule
― judged on by some off the island motherfucker (gbx), Sunday, 13 September 2009 22:07 (sixteen years ago)
mine is currently in storage but i should take it out of storage asap. i leave it on all day when i'm at work, or all night while i sleep, and have never had a fire. worst that happens is your shit dries out.
― ian, Sunday, 13 September 2009 22:09 (sixteen years ago)
not sure i will ever own one because i never cook meat but i heard you can make yogurt in them! less stirring and watching than stovetop. so maybe i will someday.
― harbl, Sunday, 13 September 2009 22:09 (sixteen years ago)
don't have a dishwasher! it's also on my list!xpost
― And I find myself shouting... BHOOT!!! BHOOT!!! (tehresa), Sunday, 13 September 2009 22:09 (sixteen years ago)
you can make all kinds of vegetable stews in a crock pot harbl.
― ian, Sunday, 13 September 2009 22:10 (sixteen years ago)
yeah but i can use the stove.... wait i don't even really understand crockpots. why are they better than normal cooking? my parents have one but they have everything.
― harbl, Sunday, 13 September 2009 22:11 (sixteen years ago)
tehresa it's just as safe as staring at the damned thing for nine hours. I mean, I imagine they design it so it won't stroy a house. :D
I was wary to get one bcz I had WAY too many slimy-skinned chicken thighs in gloppy rice & cream of mushroom soup Sunday crock pot dinners as a kid, but then I discovered it also cooked meals that weren't unilaterally beige.
― O time thy pyramids (Abbott), Sunday, 13 September 2009 22:12 (sixteen years ago)

― harbl, Sunday, 13 September 2009 22:13 (sixteen years ago)
yeah i remember lots of childhood church picnic velveeta/ground beef/salsa crockpot dip things that were like this weird plastic salty slime but then later in life my mom finally gave into the south and got one and made tasty things.

a kid i know lived in texas for a while and learned to make frito pie and would do so in a crock pot. this gave me a low opinion of crockpots and texas.
― harbl, Sunday, 13 September 2009 22:14 (sixteen years ago)
I love mine and am trying to make a point of using it more this fall.
― \(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Sunday, 13 September 2009 23:44 (sixteen years ago)
I like it because it's the easiest way to get tasty vegetables. I'm trying to eat more of them, and I'm pretty burned out on steamed broccoli with lemon juice.
― ice cr?m paint job (milo z), Sunday, 13 September 2009 23:47 (sixteen years ago)
Apparently you can even bake cakes in them!

Put 1 sliced onion in bottom of CROCK-POT then add meat and other ingredients with second onion on top. Cover and cook overnight or 8 to 12 hours on Low.
Remove bone and fat from meat. Put meat back in CROCK-POT. Add chopped onion and barbecue sauce. Cover and cook additional 3 to 5 hours on High or 8 to 12 hours on Low, stirring tow or three times. Serve from CROCK-POT on large buns.

A terrible recipe from the same cookbook:
Beef and Egg Casserole2 cups uncooked elbow macaroni2 10-ounce cans cream of mushroom soup1 5-ounce jar (or 2 3-ounce packages) sliced dried beef, shredded1 1/2 cups cubed Cheddar cheese1 tablespoon butter or margarine4 hard-cooked eggs, diced1/2 medium onion, chopped2 cups evaporated milk
Combine all ingredients in CROCK-POT. Stir thoroughly. Cover and cook on Low 5 to 7 hours. (High: 3 hours).
I made this. Don't make this.

i try to make a point not to use dried, jarred beef in anything tbh.
― ian, Monday, 14 September 2009 03:30 (sixteen years ago)
I haven't made this but it sounds good:
Pumpkin Tea Bread1 cup oil1 cup granulated sugar1 cup brown sugar4 beaten eggs1 lb can pumpkin3 cups sifted flour1 1/2 teaspoons salt1 teaspoon cinnamon1 teaspoon nutmeg or 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice mix2 teaspoons soda2/3 cup chopped walnuts2/3 cup cut-up dates
Blend oil and two sugars. Stir in beaten eggs, pumpkin. Sift dry ingredients together. Add. Stir in nuts and dates. Pour batter into greased and floured 3-pound coffee can. Place can in CROCK-POT. Cover top of can with 4 to 6 paper towels. Place lid on top. Bake on High for 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 hours. No fair peeking until last hour!
3-pound coffee can < this is kind of a deal breaker though since I always get coffee in bags. I guess I could improvise with a metal or Pyrex bowl or something.
Also that last sentence is from the cookbook and not me trying to get cuetcelsiored.
― Only Built for Cuban ILX ... (los blue jeans), Monday, 14 September 2009 03:39 (sixteen years ago)
A coffee can? Why wouldnt you just use a cake tin? How odd.
― Dearth Disco (Trayce), Monday, 14 September 2009 03:45 (sixteen years ago)
Coffee cans are the standard vessel for cooking steamed breads in the USA iirc (see Boston Brown Bread for example)

a 3 pound coffee can seems too big to fit in a crock pot!
