damn you tripod. BUT COME ON PEOPLE, JIM FUCKING CARROLL.
i already r.i.p.'ed him over on ilm, but i'll gladly r.i.p. him again. "people who died" was in heavy rotation on college radio at the time i started listening, and as a suburban 8th-grader it seemed like a document from some distant, dangerous planet. i didn't know anything about him then, but it didn't sound like he was kidding.

Yeah, hearing "People Who Died" for the first time on -- let's see, can't actually remember whether it was WBCN or WFNX and it speaks to JC's appeal that it could have been either -- late at night in my dorm room in I guess 1990 was one of the "WHAT IS THIS?????" moments I've had ten to fifteen times in my life. Not even so much "WHAT IS THIS???? IT'S SO GREAT" but "WHAT IS THIS???? THE FACT THAT IT EXISTS DOESN'T FIT INTO MY CURRENT WORLDVIEW."

but i was older, and getting into that whole scene he was a part of, and it was maybe 95.
well, not older...i was young, i meant that i got into him later

I've only ever read The Basketball Diaries & that was, appropriately enough, when I was a senior in high school. I also had "People Who Died" on a comp CD back before anyone had CD burners & I used to put on mix tapes for people all the time.
RIP J.C. - He did more living '65-85 than most could hope to cram into several lifetimes.

Nobody will ever again sing that song without adding a brand-new stanza just for JC himself.

Check out Ken Tucker having the nerve to call Jim Carroll a poseur back in 1980:
