i wonder if for some of these guys they come in thinking theyll pass for straight in strictly a pr fashion but then it gets mixed up w/their desire for fame and identification w/their public persona and starts being all a little too real

It's always so sad to see a promising young performer sucked into the seedy underworld of the straight lifestyle. It's not PC to say this, but it must be told: they actively recruit, and they must be stopped.

I used to work in theater, and while it's true that overall it's a very gay community, I found that the ratio of straights:gays grows steadily as you climb the "actual talent" ladder and by the time you're talking about the really great actors then it's probably the same ratio as in the rest of the world. Well, maybe a little gayer. It is theater.

Hmm, I wonder how this could be. Let us ponder.

Maybe it's that "drama club" or "high school theatre" is a sort of de facto queerboys-and-fag-hags-are-welcome-here zone in high school. Some people think they're into acting when really it's just that the flamboyance of non-normative masculinity gets permitted when you're doing something that is supposed to be over the top expressive (loud, lots of arm movements, lots of emotion, verbal expression). Plus, you know, the um, obvious stuff about the closet itself effectively giving queers a headstart program in the identity-as-performance dynamic- they're used to roleplay as they have had to do some in order to avoid getting beaten up. I wonder if as queerness gets acceptable in younger and younger people if this whole over-representation in drama will dry up.

he was lovely in Campion's Keats movie and the only worthwhile pretty object in The Danish Girl.

he was really good in 'perfume' which i didn't much enjoy beyond his total commitment to the role. i always enjoy watching him in movies, maybe if he starred in the danish girl i'd give it a go but unfortunately eddie redmayne is nails on a chalkboard to me.

I haven't seen anything Redmayne is in, but his filmography shows a knack for appearing in just the kinds of things that I go out of my way to avoid.
