talking w/a actor friend last nite - she was observing how mostly the male actors she rubs shoulders w/are gay and figuring pretty much that a good percentage of hollywood actors are prob gay then too

its compelling thinkin abt what this mass closeting means for the actors personally for their fans and the industry and indeed for the nation as a whole

ice cr?m, Monday, 14 September 2009 17:41 (sixteen years ago)

Yes every actor ever is gay.

You don't have to be gay to be an actor. You do have to be rather strange.

at what point is total gayosity achieved?

velko, Monday, 14 September 2009 18:48 (sixteen years ago)

The point you feel the need to dump the star of a popular sitcom, marry a woman who looks like bug-eyed fish and adopt six dozen third world babies as a attempt to hide your completely obvious flaming homosexuality?

its interesting the line between and shared neurosis of the professional and personal closeting of a hollywood actor

like if brad pitt is gay hes obv going way further than necessary to hide his sexuality as far his professional needs goes

i wonder if for some of these guys they come in thinking theyll pass for straight in strictly a pr fashion but then it gets mixed up w/their desire for fame and identification w/their public persona and starts being all a little too real

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 15:50 (sixteen years ago)

It's always so sad to see a promising young performer sucked into the seedy underworld of the straight lifestyle. It's not PC to say this, but it must be told: they actively recruit, and they must be stopped.

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 15:59 (sixteen years ago)

maybe actors have to act gay in order to get ahead in the hollywood system. it's a disgrace imo.

I used to work in theater, and while it's true that overall it's a very gay community, I found that the ratio of straights:gays grows steadily as you climb the "actual talent" ladder and by the time you're talking about the really great actors then it's probably the same ratio as in the rest of the world. Well, maybe a little gayer. It is theater.

Fetchboy, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 20:51 (sixteen years ago)

So it's gayer at the bottom of the talent ladder?

Cunga, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 22:18 (sixteen years ago)

if youre on top its not really gay

Hmm, I wonder how this could be. Let us ponder.

Maybe it's that "drama club" or "high school theatre" is a sort of de facto queerboys-and-fag-hags-are-welcome-here zone in high school. Some people think they're into acting when really it's just that the flamboyance of non-normative masculinity gets permitted when you're doing something that is supposed to be over the top expressive (loud, lots of arm movements, lots of emotion, verbal expression). Plus, you know, the um, obvious stuff about the closet itself effectively giving queers a headstart program in the identity-as-performance dynamic- they're used to roleplay as they have had to do some in order to avoid getting beaten up. I wonder if as queerness gets acceptable in younger and younger people if this whole over-representation in drama will dry up.

is katie holmes gay? did she know that cruisekat was gay? is nicole kidman gay? is keith urban gay? he looks kinda gay. but he's australian so its hard to tell. paul hogan always looked kinda gay to me too. but gaydar is thrown off by the aussie/brit thing. someone could just have really nice manners. everyone in hollywood has probably ALWAYS known that john travolta was gay since he was a sweathog, right? but did his wife just go along with a marriage for the money or did she really not know? she had to have known. is will smith gay? i know jada is. and eddie murphy is famously gay, but wait he's not a scientologist. is beck gay?

I haven't seen anything Redmayne is in, but his filmography shows a knack for appearing in just the kinds of things that I go out of my way to avoid.

Forgot about Campion's Keats film, which is a good one.
