according to today programme this morning, the veteran chef has died of a heart attack, the same week that the daily mail has begin serialising his autobiography.

a figure from another age, perhaps, but the snippets of his old shows, which used to show up on saturday kitchen in the uk, proved he had a lot of charm.

Pour one out. And then another, and then another.

DavidM, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 08:06 (fifteen years ago)

did you see "keith meets keith" last night on channel 4?

It was pretty awesome, even never having seen the guy's TV shows.

Keith Allen - the new Martin Bashir?

James Mitchell, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 08:08 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, did.

Sad stuff, but one heck of a tribute...

Mark G, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 08:08 (fifteen years ago)

[sorry, could someone move this to ILE?]

Damn, great culinary inspiration and a one of a kind broadcaster. Still use his cookbooks fairly regularly. 65, amazed he lasted so long actually.

It means there's no official confirmation, just a credible source.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 08:55 (fifteen years ago)

And yeah drunken roffles etc but the guy was an insanely good broadcaster. My favourite TV chef by some distance. RIP.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 08:56 (fifteen years ago)

The Sun is reporting it (so it must be true, etc.)

Damn, I saw the programme last night and all the way through thought "he's not a well man". Very sad. The man was very obviously..erm..difficult, as anyone who saw the original programmes will remember, his constant bullying of the crew, although light-hearted, always had an air of menace about it. His cookbooks are good too, totally usable. Best bit last night, after a sickly montage of Rhodes, Novelli, et al talking him up, he's asked what he thinks of celebrity chefs "a load of cunts" he replies. Worst bit, him falling about at the dinner table, clearly unwell, daughter upset, Keith Allan still gurning at the camera.

RIP.

His website confirms it.

Always enjoyed watching Floyd's programmes when I was a kid, but managed to see some of his old shows recently for the first time in years - as Matt DC says, he really was great.

RIP.

I tried to watch that last night but C4 reception went wonkeh. OOOweeeeOOOOOweeeeOOOO.

A lot of resting this year, but how much peace? Thanks for teaching my friends and I to cook and drink at the same time. RIP.

I loved this guy.

gnarly sceptre, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 09:45 (fifteen years ago)

Oh! RIP. He lived in the same small market town as me until his most recent divorce about a year ago; I'd see him around occasionally, and as Ned T says would often think that he didn't look too well. I was kind of hoping that things would turn round for him with his 80s stuff being shown again, and he was all set to open another restaurant locally, but it never worked out. Poor guy.

Waltzinblack in head for rest of day, starting now.

a passing spacecadet, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 09:47 (fifteen years ago)

The rumour: he had cancer. Am going to watch the doc on 4OD now.

lacoste intolerant (suzy), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 09:49 (fifteen years ago)

Beeb says bowel cancer, yes: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8256260.stm

...though regarding my previous post he seemed not at all in good shape even before that, but enough of that, remember the guy as he was, just rocking up to the pier, cooking seafood, throwing half a bottle of wine in and swigging the other half in front of bemused locals and harrassed cameraman, accent and dress sense that now seem like something out of another age...

a passing spacecadet, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 09:57 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, but he borned the whole "lads on TV doing cooking and that" as up till then it was all Fanny Craddock and doylies and stuff.

Back then, most of the TV chefs were women, and people would say "Did you know 99% of chefs that work in restaurants are men?" and we would go Really? wow!

We don't now.

Mark G, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 10:00 (fifteen years ago)

Thanks for teaching my friends and I to cook and drink at the same time. RIP.

OTM. Thanks to Floyd, cooking now starts with "chopping board... bottle of wine... right, what are we eating?"

The rumour: he had cancer.

Yes, this is what he said on the programme last night. He had a series of ops and chemo over the summer, and given his past he was always going to be in a fragile state. On the programme he told Allen that his doc had told him his kidneys were working 100%. I don't know whether he was deluding himself (which would be a typical alcoholic response in my experience) or whether his doc just said - "yeah, I'm 100% sure they're working, it's just how much they're working..." and he was "...say no more doc, that's good enough for me!"

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 10:49 (fifteen years ago)

or maybe:

"OK, keith, good news, your kidneys are fine....."

Oh man, I just read about this. I can't express my sorrow. Floyd was who got me into cooking - well, him and my dad. But watching Floyd on Food and Floyd on France in the early 90s was an inspiration to me. He showed me cooking is about flair and fun and maybe a little too much wine.

And the Stranglers as his theme song.

RIP Keith and godspeed, you rambunctious drunken old wonder.

What makes it for me is the madam of the house berating Floyd in French in the background.

"the old dragon"! Great clip and RIP.

Excellent. The affection he has (despite his moaning) for the food and process comes through, and Madame is just the right foil ("not too badly done" I think she says when he plonks it on the plate - brilliant).

...throwing half a bottle of wine in and swigging the other half... per example...

God I've just watched a couple of old clips on YT and I had not realised how ingrained his basics are in my cooking mind.

There's a last one-off TV special for his funeral - Floyd On Fire.

Actually I have that book. It's good.
