or am i just more aware of it because i am?
is there some unifying reason we are talking about these things more? i think it's good, just wondering if anything resulted in the sudden interest.

i was big into the gym at the beginning of the year and then my thesis and some other issues kind of took over. but after i moved and i had lots of unemployed time i made a big effort to do it right, and i'm loving it.

I think we have a lot of interests, life experience and information stuck in our heads and whatever thread is currently going will be the one we post to.

i just mean there are a lot of health-related threads going at once. like a few months ago there were a lot of masturbation threads going at once. i like this better. and for the most part, i find it really supportive! good job, ilxors.

And last week there were three dating threads going at once. It's like a subject cloud. Iatee's comment is insightful, but I still think it has to do more with whatever we're talking about at the moment. And certain people with opt out of the conversation, too.
― bamcquern, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 18:29 (fifteen years ago)
maybe it's because we're all fat from sitting around masturbating

i'd think it a reasonable calorie burner, depending on skill level. xpost

i've been slacking on exercise and i'm pretty sure i put on a couple of pounds. being in too many bands + being in a relationship = not nearly as much free time as i used to have, and if i have a spare hour i've been spending it on things like cleaning/cooking/recording/video games.

you don't get a serious workout when you play?
― new clusterfuck thread will eventually provide me a funny display name (sarahel), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 18:36 (fifteen years ago)
also i'm sorta waiting for it to get cold before i starting going to the gym again, which is kind of a weird rationale, but now i just keep telling myself i'll go for a run or bike when i get home, and then don't.
xp i don't think drumming burns that many calories if you're doing it right?
― Ømår Littel (Jordan), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 18:37 (fifteen years ago)
i mean your ass gets sweaty but it's mostly wrist/finger/ankle movement, not exactly sustained cardio or heavy lifting.
― Ømår Littel (Jordan), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 18:38 (fifteen years ago)
^^^ you should hardly be moving when you play drums if you are doing it right!

I was thinking more along the lines of hauling one's gear ...
― new clusterfuck thread will eventually provide me a funny display name (sarahel), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 18:42 (fifteen years ago)
one thing i've learned a lot about is the correct muscle movements. i imagine hauling gear is usually done by relying on the kinetic chain instead of focused isolation of the muscle that will really help you haul better. but what do i know. i don't have any gear.
― And I find myself shouting... BHOOT!!! BHOOT!!! (tehresa), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 18:44 (fifteen years ago)
I put all my hardware in a suitcase that ends up weighing between 40-60 lbs, and the wheels are shot. I think I just have un-ergonomic containers for my gear.
― new clusterfuck thread will eventually provide me a funny display name (sarahel), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 18:50 (fifteen years ago)
everyone is. it can't be avoided. well, it can be, but you wouldn't want to.
besides, getting more health concious as you get older is a good thing, because health is a good thing and bad health is often a cumulative thing. the older you get, the more important it is to slow down that accumulation of harmful actions, caused by bad habits, because you've used up some of your nine lives.
― Aimless, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 20:20 (fifteen years ago)
my goal is to a) be healthier b) look better and c) maintain this newfound healthierness so that i am a healther person at 37 than i am at 27.
― tehresa, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 20:22 (fifteen years ago)
or even at 30.
i've been eating really terribly lately, but between the gigging (one of the bands i'm in is a 'marching' band) and the working in a sweaty ass restaurant and the bicycle commutes and the bizarre return to somewhat regular sleeping cycles i've somehow reset my metabolism almost back to teenage levels, so i guess my lifestyle changes bring on the fucking fried chicken or something.

there are a lot of great drummers that telegraph and move around a lot, but that's extraneous motion for emotion's sake or to keep time between beats. imo their real technique is very relaxed and economical, it doesn't take much wrist/arm motion to bring the stick far back or to be loud.
there are also a lot of great fat drummers.
― Ømår Littel (Jordan), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 22:48 (fifteen years ago)
depending on what style you play in, you might end up moving around more, and doing relatively light aerobic or cardio exercise. I was thinking less of arm motion than the combination of that and fast footwork.

I'm interested in oddball training regimens and old-school Olympic/powerlifting stuff - kettlebells, squatting, deadlifts, old-time strongman stuff like hitting a tire with a sledgehammer. Farmer's Walks are good because they translate heavily into my daily life (pick up two heavy weights, walk as far as you can, drop. Rest, pick up again and return to beginning). Bodyweight stuff will be more fun once I get my weight down.

Also Crossfit/Gym Jones. I like the idea of varying routines and exercises so it's more like a game, rather than having your entire week planned in advance, but the Crossfit Nazis are off-putting.

i end up sweating more playing bass or other instruments where i am standing and more likely to shake my ass than when i'm drumming.
