The triangle is like a big thumbs up from the Federal Highway Administration, saying, "You'll do the right thing."

See, this is what I'm talking about. One thread about traffic signs and another one pops up. Subject cloud.

The Viceroy says that they're disappearing....I'll be so sad if my children never see a yield sign.

existential eggs (Abbott), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 18:52 (sixteen years ago)

A better subject cloud than Radiohead imo.

existential eggs (Abbott), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 18:52 (sixteen years ago)

yes yes yes

bamcquern, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 18:52 (sixteen years ago)

I don't see them that often. I probably see blinking yellow lights more often.

jaymc, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 18:54 (sixteen years ago)

a friend of mine (and a lurker afaik) used to call yield signs "keep your wits about you" signs

dr. johnson (askance johnson), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 18:54 (sixteen years ago)

xp (I guess that's b/c I live in a city.)

jaymc, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 18:55 (sixteen years ago)

They're really the only symbol I can think of that I encounter everyday where the government explicitly states that my own judgement is best when it comes to safety in my own lives and the lives of others. This has made me wonder for many years why libertarians have not made more of a fuss about yield signs.

existential eggs (Abbott), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 18:55 (sixteen years ago)

That there should be more of them?

bamcquern, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 18:56 (sixteen years ago)

what if yield signs were the only signs used

harbl, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 18:56 (sixteen years ago)

it might change how people think about life and the world

harbl, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 18:57 (sixteen years ago)

Have you read about those studies done that showed removing traffic signs improved safety, that is, reduced speed and reduced deadly accidents?

bamcquern, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 18:57 (sixteen years ago)

I think a libertarian would argue to replace stop signs with yield signs as they mean less government interference. Though not a libertarian, I feel yield signs are a caring and significant gesture.

existential eggs (Abbott), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 18:57 (sixteen years ago)

i believe it! xp

oh god they recently put up yield signs on some of the Kennedy Expressway entrance ramps, basically right in the middle of downtown Chicago. Everytime I pass by them on my way home from work I think I AM GOING TO DIE

"Yield signs!"

existential eggs (Abbott), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 18:59 (sixteen years ago)

dr. johnson I have never seen anything other than yield signs on entrance ramps, otoh I come from the sticks. Did you have nothing before, or a traffic light?

existential eggs (Abbott), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 19:00 (sixteen years ago)

ha I guess you're right, I think it is more that the entrance ramps / merge lane is really short and people are merging in from the left

dr. johnson (askance johnson), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 19:01 (sixteen years ago)

Most entrance ramps don't have any signs at all, but for some reason seeing the yield signs freaks me out

dr. johnson (askance johnson), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 19:02 (sixteen years ago)

Also, I once rammed the car in front of me on a highway entrance ramp that had a stop sign.

dr. johnson (askance johnson), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 19:02 (sixteen years ago)

Everytime I pass by them on my way home from work I think I AM GOING TO DIE

I often think this whenever I'm on that hellish stretch of the Kennedy between 55 and 290, and it has nothing to do with yield signs.

jaymc, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 19:03 (sixteen years ago)

I think they're actually doing construction to make it slightly safer, but that is what is making it hellishly dangerous for the time being.

dr. johnson (askance johnson), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 19:06 (sixteen years ago)

The most serious accident I've been in happened because the person at an intersection with a yield sign thought that meant I had a stop sign (on the crossing street, which had no signs, being the main street in the neighborhood). She didn't even slow down and rammed my car directly behind the driver's seat.
