I really enjoyed this. The writing feels a little generic at this point, and the casting leaves a little to be desired, but I'm pretty sure that I'll be watching this nonsense every week. I guess there's room in my life for another ridiculous show.
On the other hand, Seth MacFarlane should never ever be allowed to make a cameo in anything.
Anyone else watch this thing?

"Flash Forward", a show where nearly everyone on earth blacks out and has visions of the future
Any random drunken Friday night ILX thread, then.

Finally, a show about us!

I liked it enough to keep watching. Some of the visuals were pretty great, like the balloons drifting into the air. (CGI smoke aside, ABC needs some new people on that particular effect). Obviously Lost-inspired, but some of the direction was pretty weak, as well as the script by Goyer and Braga. I know it's kind of unfair to compare the pilot to Lost, that one being probably one of the best pilots ever, but the show sort of forces that comparison.
It definitely annoyed me after the first 20 minutes being pretty good (and that cool little bit with the kangeroo on the street), you get to a scene where people are watching cable news from a storefront, footage of the whole world having the blackouts. Then one of the bystanders says "it's not just here, it's all over the world!" Almost the entire rest of the pilot had the same sort of tedious exposition and bad dialogue.
Still, I dug the actors more than I didn't, and really like the premise still. The show definitely has promise. I definitely want to see more of those character flashforwards.

Moderately excited about this, based on what I've read in previews and things. Have downloaded, will watch tonight. Although apparently it's showing here too, on Mondays on five.
― JimD, Friday, 25 September 2009 10:37 (fifteen years ago)
Gr I'm off to the US tomorrow so have missed episode 1 there, and it's not showing here til Monday, so missing that too. Anyone know if it's repeated in the US anytime from Sunday onwards? It looks like the kind of naff thing I'll love.

It's actually being repeated tonight here in the US at 8pm, if you have the chance. If not, I'm sure it'll go up on ABC's site or Hulu.

OK even though I have read this thread before I saw it on new answers just now and thought it said""Flash Forward", a show where nearly everyone on earth blacks up..."
― Not the real Village People, Friday, 25 September 2009 14:08 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, really enjoyed this. It felt strangely cheap and a bit schlocky (it's definitely going to be at home on five) but the premise has a lot of potential. Maybe too much potential, in a "can't really see them taking an idea that good and not fucking it up" kind of way. We'll see.
― JimD, Friday, 25 September 2009 22:22 (fifteen years ago)
You have to give them style points for the show's premise. Very fetching.
However, due to my misspent youth, I am all televisioned out and do not plan on watching this. Or most anything else in the way of tv sitcom or drama. This is most certainly my loss. Carry on.
― Aimless, Friday, 25 September 2009 23:51 (fifteen years ago)
flashBOREward more like.
fiennes was a complete blank. made matthew fox look like... a charismatic and engaging leading man.
― history mayne, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 08:57 (fifteen years ago)
wait a minute, let me get this straight -- you're saying, everyone blacked out, but we didn't dream, we saw -- the future?
yes, that's what i'm saying. i really believe everyone -- everyone on earth -- blacked out. and saw. the future.
ok hold on, this is crazy. what you're saying is that everyone on earth blacked out and saw the future?
all right, dammit, can you give me an update on this situation we're in where everyone on earth blacked out and saw the future?

i was a bit drunk when i saw it and might go back, but fiennes really was shit.
i "like" that they've *started* a show with the impossible time-travel paradox that has rendered "lost" incoherent.

See also: Heroes.
― James Mitchell, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 10:38 (fifteen years ago)
I didn't think he was that bad at all. And I thought he was good in the quieter bits where I usually doze off. Pretty much enjoyed the whole thing, and the last minute or so was great (although they shouldn't have zoomed in, it looked spookier from a distance).
― Ned Trifle (Notinmyname), Wednesday, 30 September 2009 10:41 (fifteen years ago)
They were zooming in on Charlie Lost, right?
― James Mitchell, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 12:52 (fifteen years ago)
that's what it looks like, though i guess we'll get confirmation this week or next
― Nhex, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 15:08 (fifteen years ago)
I always knew Cameron would grow up to be the same worrywart he was in high school. Obviously nothing Ferris taught him rubbed off. Good to see he's in AA, though.
― James Mitchell, Saturday, 3 October 2009 23:11 (fifteen years ago)
^^He was actually great during the entire run of Spin City, though.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 4 October 2009 04:00 (fifteen years ago)
Show hasn't been too promising the last couple of weeks, but I guess the ratings have been good enough because it got an order for the back half, upping the whole thing to 25 episodes.

I'm willing to put up with a bunch of soapy human relationship shit if the weirdo science stuff pays off. Still optimistic that it might.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 17:54 (fifteen years ago)
They're not doing themselves any favors playing ads for the much better-looking "V" during this.
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 17:55 (fifteen years ago)
I don't think "V" looks very good at all, btw.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 17:57 (fifteen years ago)
I am going to watch the shit out of it.
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 17:59 (fifteen years ago)
Speaking of which, I have watched all ten episodes so far of Defying Gravity. Its ratio of 'bunch of soapy human relationship shit' to 'weirdo science stuff' makes Flash Forward look like Metropolis.
― James Mitchell, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 18:01 (fifteen years ago)
The FBI guys/girl have said at least twice something along the lines "The evidence shows that the only possible scenario is that every single person in the world blacked out"Then when they find that one spooooky guy on the CCTV it's like "What? But it was PROVEN that every single person in the world blacked out! And definitely saw the actual future!"
Fiennes is crap. That stuff with the prisoner showing them something completely UNhelpful to the investigation as PROOF that he had helpful information was among the worst TV logic I've ever seen. I'm still gonna carry on watching it, though...
― Not the real Village People, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 18:30 (fifteen years ago)
Is there a thread for the new V? I'm definitely gonna watch it if just for Elizabeth Mitchell and Morena Baccarin, though I'm not loving the weird anti-Obama vibe it seems they're trying to put off...
― Nhex, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 19:02 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, is Dr. Morbius writing for that show or what.
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 19:04 (fifteen years ago)

I knew I wasn't crazy for thinking that!
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 19:05 (fifteen years ago)
Maybe the guy who didn't black out has injected himself with ANTI-CROW DNA or something.
― James Mitchell, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 19:05 (fifteen years ago)
(but that's not why I think it looks awful) xp
Everyone from "Party of Five" will eventually be in a sci-fi/fantasy tv series.

I wanted to just watch the two return episodes and write this show off completely. The first episode alone would've done it, but now it looks like Dominic Monaghan is finally a real main character and miles beyond the rest of the cast. The last half hour pretty much belonged to him and was way better than the series has done so far. Too bad for Ricky Jay, he was pretty great. Still don't really have confidence in what the writers have in store though - the way they added those events to Fiennes' flash forward seemed pretty hacky. I don't know... anyone else still hanging on to this thing?
― Nhex, Saturday, 20 March 2010 03:29 (fifteen years ago)
I watched a bit of the summation episode the other day. Will not be watching again.
― no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Saturday, 20 March 2010 03:39 (fifteen years ago)
It's back in the UK on Monday, I don't know if I can be bothered, but I think I more enjoyed it than didn't enjoy it, even though it was basically shit (see also most things I watch on the telly). Joseph Fiennes is really bad though, no wonder his wife left him for Jack Davenport.
― ailsa, Saturday, 20 March 2010 08:23 (fifteen years ago)
I'm still watching, although I had forgotten quite how terrible it is. It moves so slowly and Joseph Fiennes and Penny/Olivia are beyond annoying. I swear the writing is twenty times worse now too eg "oh it is your sister Annabelle"Watching them try to say all the physics lines with a straight face is p funny too.
― Not the real Village People, Friday, 26 March 2010 19:40 (fifteen years ago)
I watched it. It was all kinds of shite, but I will keep watching.
I still don't understand how no-one anywhere went "oh this is just like that thing when everyone in Somalia conked out", I meant, it was freely available on the internet when they decided to go looking.
the way they added those events to Fiennes' flash forward seemed pretty hacky.
Oh jesus, the way this impacted on Davenport's was ridiculous as well. He was on the phone to him? O RLY? And we didn't know this when we found out he was shagging his missus via the medium of his flashforward?
― ailsa, Friday, 26 March 2010 19:54 (fifteen years ago)
I basically 100% agree with Nhex. Actually, should I be downloading a new one of these right now?
― JimD, Friday, 26 March 2010 22:40 (fifteen years ago)
Yes, there was a new episode last night. Similarly, most of it was crap, but one character and his storyline suddenly got more entertaining - I'll let you find out which one!
― Nhex, Saturday, 27 March 2010 00:25 (fifteen years ago)
Can't believe I'm still watching this, but I have to admit the last episode was actually kind of entertaining, b/w the Janice triple agent backstory and crazy Baltar, who apparently got in trouble for going to a Pixies concert 20 years ago. Why is Olivia part of the investigation team now?!

the Janice triple agent backstory
I just saw the "trailer" for her NBC sitcom (Perfect Couples) and it looks absolutely terrible. Maybe after it gets canceled, she'll end up in something good.

A distinct lack of James Callis in the finale. Boo.
― James Mitchell, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 07:48 (fifteen years ago)
Finally got around to watching the finale, it was kind of hilarious. Why was Benford going round shooting all the masked guys in the FBI building when he knew the bomb was just gonna go off?
