Drew Barrymore directs Ellen Page in a movie about rollerderbys called 'Whip It'

Saw trailer for this last week. Looks like fun! Not a huge Ellen Page fan, but Drew & Zoe Bell as Rollerderby chicks? YES!

I will watch this.

Page, whose turn as the preternaturally pragmatic pregnant teen looking for an adoptive couple in "Juno" earned her an Oscar nomination, once again plays teenage angst with an almost tactile nuance here.

i enjoy rollerskates quite a bit

the trailer for this is especially awful

i mean, in terms of being one of those trailers that gives away every plot point -- like, in about six seconds it goes through: ellen page takes up roller derby / ellen page lies to parents about taking SAT class / ellen page's parents find out she has lied and are angry / ellen page's parents start to realise there is value in it / ellen page is reconciled with her parents via gift of new skates

Trailer does a lousy job of making nerd girl un-hot.

also nice to see daniel stern again (in the trailer)

this wasn't so bad actually. i felt like a complete dork when i noticed the daniel johnston reference on the wall (and on landon's t-shirt). i understand why it bombed, but i honestly think it was a pretty fun movie. even enjoyed juliette lewis in it.

I'm waiting for the Runaways movie to come out on DVD next week so I can do a double feature with this.

Oooh! I really need to see that one as well. I also need to watch Hard Candy.

the Runaways movie was WAAAAY funnier because it was also (in many ways) so much worse.

i loved this

I hated my friend for repping for this so much that I expected it to be good. Maybe if I'd watched it completely cold I wouldn't mind. Maeby & Ellen Page were great and there were some nice touches but on the whole it seemed like a massive wasted opportunity. That food fight was criiiinge, Barrymore was kind of annoying and I was genuinely surprised that there was no deviation whatsoever from that tired old plot.
Still want to watch the Runaways.

This is a cool movie! Juliette Lewis kinda steals the show.
