£300 for 'fake Renoir' portrait

A piece of art created in the style of Renoir has sold for £300 at an auction in Banbury, Oxfordshire.

The pastel portrait of a young woman is by the late Tom Keating - known for recreating the works of famous artists.

In the 1970s Keating faced a charge of conspiracy to defraud, but the case was dropped due to his ill health.

The picture auctioned is believed to be one Keating produced for a TV series in the 1980s to demonstrate the techniques behind the work of Renoir.

Nick Williams of Holloway's auction house said: "Since his death, Keating's paintings have become increasingly sought after."

In 2008 a fake Monet by Keating sold for £15,000 after it turned up on the Antiques Roadshow.

Keating, who died aged 67 in 1984, admitted in 1979 that nine works of art said to be drawings by Samuel Palmer were, in fact, his copies.
