An hour in the morning, and three in the evening.

Mark G, Thursday, 1 October 2009 13:37 (fifteen years ago)

I was actually thinking about it this morning, but then I put another cardigan on instead.

I only put the central heating one when I have run out of cardigans.

We had ours on for a bit in the evening the other week, but it's been off again since then.

Looking forward to the traditional giant radiator parade later

modescalator (blueski), Thursday, 1 October 2009 13:46 (fifteen years ago)

Not looking forward to bleeding the radiators (and cleaning out any dead mice fallen behind them) this weekend.

Nowhere near cold enough yet. Even at 6 in the morning it's t-shirt weather.

DavidM, Thursday, 1 October 2009 13:48 (fifteen years ago)

I think it's nominally been turned on all summer but the thermostat is set low so it hasn't come on (except when I've turned it up to dry clothes on the radiators). But that's kind of accidental because I thought I was turning the hot water on, not the central heating. Apparently not. Need to read the boiler manual. Zzz.

I'm holding out but when my son finds out it's Central Heating Day (it's probably all they talk about at school) it's going to be difficult.

Ned Trifle II, Thursday, 1 October 2009 13:53 (fifteen years ago)

The BBC have totally made this all up haven't they? I can't find any other reference to it apart from ones linking to this page and now, this poll.

Ned Trifle II, Thursday, 1 October 2009 13:57 (fifteen years ago)

Some of those picture captions are really WTF? "A radiator - a rare sight in 1970" er... "Victorian house builders kept rooms small for warmth" - no they didn't, they kept rooms warm by putting a bloody fire in every room!

a gift from your mind in the form of the perfect beat (snoball), Thursday, 1 October 2009 14:02 (fifteen years ago)

had in on last night for about an hour, but i was having a bath. otherwise, it's been on for maybe 2 hours total since the end of winter (march/april this year)

"Victorian house builders kept rooms small for warmth"

Yes, I know there's 14 of you to the one room but think of the savings on your fuel bill. We're only thinking of you.

Ned Trifle II, Thursday, 1 October 2009 14:08 (fifteen years ago)

Italy have this as well, I forget the date but it is mandated as the day when blocks of flats with communal heating have to turn it on.

Here in pittsburgh it hasn't gone on in my building yet. Although I expect it must be soon as it is a mite bit chilly. That said, most of last winter my radiators were off as the heat from lower apartments seems to keep me toasty, the building has massive 30s radiators and very new double glazing so it doesn't seem to take a lot to heat.

I've never heard of it before so am inclined to agree.

Certainly nowhere near cold enough yet; in fact M/cr is basking in gorgeous autumnal sunshine at the moment.

Mine is likely to go on in November at the very earliest, given the gruesome gas bill we got last spring (largely because I kept forgetting to set the timers so we'd just bask in heat for hours in the evening). Also, whichever Victorian builder designed our house kindly thought to include 10 foot ceilings so that the upper areas of the room are doubtless toasty whilst we shiver in jumpers below.

Bill A, Thursday, 1 October 2009 14:16 (fifteen years ago)

Yep, today is none too cold here in Oxford either, and the last couple of weeks have been unseasonably hot for the end of September.

I feel like someone turned on the central heating in my head today, does that count? I think I'm getting a cold as a karmic slap for complaining on ILX about my officemate sniffing yesterday.

Congrats UK! In the US, Central Heating Day is celebrated four months later, to disassociate itself from the stigma of Communism.

I used my furnace at home last night for the first time this season. Weather in Cleveland switched over the weekend from 80F to about 60F during the day, and 40F overnight.

a wicked 60s beat poop combo (Pancakes Hackman), Thursday, 1 October 2009 14:23 (fifteen years ago)

Not yet, it's still warm enough here that we leave one of our windows open 24 hours. Think I considered it one day over the summer when it was bloody freezing though! May even be as late as the end of the month depending on how cold it gets.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 1 October 2009 14:25 (fifteen years ago)

I don't turn on the central heating, it turns on itself if the temp drops below whatever the thermostat is set to for that time of day. Surely this is the case for most people with modern boilers? Anyway, it won't be today.

Should probably have bled those radiators though.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 1 October 2009 14:35 (fifteen years ago)

So, no-one's got an aga?

Ned Trifle II, Thursday, 1 October 2009 14:42 (fifteen years ago)

wtf we have a central heating day? lame. both my bedroom windows are wide open, and were wide open all night too.

lex pretend, Thursday, 1 October 2009 15:14 (fifteen years ago)

i mean idk if it's escaped your notice but it's actually STILL WARM outside. past two weeks in bournemouth and brighton were just gorgeous, al fresco seaside lunches and sipping champagne at 10pm on the hilton balcony~~~

lex pretend, Thursday, 1 October 2009 15:16 (fifteen years ago)

i doubt my central heating will go on before january. think it's only been on for 3 weeks total in the last two years as i tend to tough it out (if sitting under a duvet on the sofa counts as 'toughing it out'). central heating, keeping a suite of rooms warm, doesn't make much sense when there's only one of you.

(that said, waking up in the dark and walking home from work in the dark, is already getting to me)

koogs, Thursday, 1 October 2009 15:28 (fifteen years ago)

I scavenged me some chunks what fell off the coal lorry into the road, put them in a scuttle and trundled meself on home, where I proceeded to start a nice little fire on the hob and toasted some cheese on a fork. Lovely, it was.

Aimless, Thursday, 1 October 2009 16:12 (fifteen years ago)

We turn our central heating on when it gets cold, for some mad reason. Not yet then.

pretty cold in Glasgow this morning when i got up but nah, I don't fuck with the heating until it is proper baltic.

amarillo fat (jim), Thursday, 1 October 2009 16:55 (fifteen years ago)

Aye, it's coldish today, but nowhere near heating time for a hardened Glaswegian.

What jim says.

Today it is chilly. I actually thought about turning the heating on when I got out of bed. But then I remembered I had a bathrobe and I should move it into either the bathroom or bedroom for keeping me warm during trips between.

I'm a hot lady in my bedroom and I need a Lindstrøm (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 3 October 2009 08:02 (fifteen years ago)

It is getting harder to get out of bed in the mornings due to chilliness as much as tiredness.
