Nervous stomach: solutions?

All my emotions lately go straight to my stomach. Even the free-floating, minor, nebulous worry that accompanies being alive is upping the richter scale in my tummy. It would be nice to be able to hold down something more potent than saltines and weak beverages. Anyone else ever had this problem? Any ideas other than going to the doctor and asking for another bottle of phenergan?

Missing u flavor. But simultaneously worried at you.

you could try watching the labour party conference while you eat, your every sensation will be dulled into a fuzzy gelatin of vague hope

I remember vaguely hoping the hall would catch fire but that's about it.

Oh yeah, I've had this problem for years. Psych meds reduced it a lot, because it's mainly anxiety that does this. Right now, I'm under a lot of stress - the source is something I have next to no control over - and I'm having this again.

one thing that doesn't work is chain smoking like crazy, but that's my instinctual response to the stress

I haven't read that thread out of a suspicion its claims lack scientific rigor.

Perhaps a brisk walk every day? Get the blood pumping and turn all that energy outward?
This could just be a phase you're going through because you're a tightly-wound thoroughbred racehorse. Run!

I feeeeel you. I have had stomach issues for pretty much my entire adult life. Triggered, I think, by excessive drinking in my not-quite-adult life, but then (yes) perpetuated by stress and worrying and general free-floating and baseless anxiety. Cream of wheat helps, I find. Not much in the flavor department, I fear, but it's something.

Is this a constant issue or, like, something that just flares up now and then? Mine is the latter, and I've learned how to coax the beast back into submission. Ummm...exercise helped? As I've realized now that my stomach has started acting up again for the first time since I fell off my fancy exercise wagon from earlier this summer. When I was jogging and yoga-ing regularly, it was like a great weight had been lifted from my stomach for the first time in as long as I could remember.

My last nervous stomach attacks were helped by walking and swimming. It helped remove the stress that was contributing to the nausea etc. I haven't ever taken medication for mine...but then I don't get attacks all that often, and they don't last long. It might depend a lot on what your stressors are, and how bad the stomach condition is as to whether you can alleviate it without seeing a doctor.

exercise definitely helps me, as well as doing menial things that have connotations of being "in control" or "progress" - like doing dishes, sorting recycling, putting away laundry, putting coins in those little paper rolls - but that's pretty much stuff to do to try and combat the triggering anxiety.

Marijuana: Classic or Dud?

dan selzer, Friday, 2 October 2009 06:24 (fifteen years ago)

I do empathise muchly Abb <3 Mines not entirely stress related but I am suffering badly from reflux/acidy tum lately, I've been necking the Zantac tablets like nobodys business. I think its the smoking making me all acidy.

Anise, licorice root, peppermint tea -- these are all stomach-settlers. Ginger, tea or a chunk of it. Or have any pickled vegetable, even sauerkraut. Pickled things have TONS of good enzymes for digestion, that's why cuisines with heavy foods have such allegiance to the mouth-splittingly garlicky dill pickle. Mmmmmm.

that stupid-ass cannibal pen-pal of yours (Laurel), Friday, 2 October 2009 13:57 (fifteen years ago)

i get this friend.

chamomile tea can help.

gore vitalic (s1ocki), Friday, 2 October 2009 14:00 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, yes, anise! As stated in the licorice thread, ouzo is my alcoholic beverage of choice, at least in part because it settles my stomach rather than making it roil (as many other alky bevvies do).

Exercise! This is interesting.

power, corruption & plies (dyao), Saturday, 3 October 2009 04:20 (fifteen years ago)

Best cure: dissolving into hot tears over whatever really has you so upset. Second best: screaming. Sometimes starting with the second one gets you a twofer.

Aimless, Saturday, 3 October 2009 16:24 (fifteen years ago)

I'm into Celestial Seasonings Tension Tamer tea. It's peppermint, chamomile, licorice, catnip etc etc...calms the stomach, the nerves, the muscles, etc etc

dan selzer, Saturday, 3 October 2009 16:51 (fifteen years ago)

I think exercise maybe makes your GI tract run more efficiently or something? That seemed to be the case.

I got this a lot in my early to mid twenties and it was horrible, I sympathise. Now I'm entering my thirties and it seems to have pretty much vanished. I still have trouble eating if I'm in an extreme emotional state, but day to day it's not a problem at all. My dad says he went through a similar thing.

Marijuana soothes the stomach and increases appetite.
