'I am not a racist and I do not use racist language', says BBC's Strictly dancer and Hole in the Wall presenter.
Strictly Come Dancing was at the centre of a race row after it emerged that Anton Du Beke called his dancing partner a "Paki".

Well done there Jesus Goody.

For goodness sake, I don't take offence if someone call me a scottie, or my Husband get called Jock. People need to lighten up, it is becoming ridicolous. We are not allowed to say anything or have any opinions any more. Lighten up folks!

Hole In The Wall and The Cube have become an irresistible Sat evening double bill for those weekends when I'm visiting my mother and we've finally run out of Disney videos for the kids.

I don't know why I just wasted 5min of my time doing this but a search on "du beke" AND NOT Anton suggests he gave himself a stage surname not shared by anyone else in the world. So, y'know, well done for that. Racist.

He just happened to Pi(c)k a name that sounds like Afrikaans politician

"I am not a racist and I do not use racist language"... "except when I do, obviously". I mean, wtf? Quite clearly you did think it was an acceptable part of your 'banter' and thus you DO use racist language.
This is yet another indication of the increasing meaninglessness of all public discourse. People blithely say things that are blatantly contradicted by the evidence, without any thought that they might not be right, or believed. By this token, Bruce Forsyth could commit genocide but as long as he swore he wasn't a racist it would all be fine.
― emil.y, Monday, 5 October 2009 13:22 (fifteen years ago) link
You don't have to be racist to commit genocide though.
― I'M LEGALLY A MIDGET (a hoy hoy), Monday, 5 October 2009 13:23 (fifteen years ago) link
(not that that would make it fine)
― I'M LEGALLY A MIDGET (a hoy hoy), Monday, 5 October 2009 13:24 (fifteen years ago) link
That would be Bruce Forsyth's defence, I'm sure. RACIST MURDERER.
― emil.y, Monday, 5 October 2009 13:27 (fifteen years ago) link
Trying to think of circumstances in which a non-racist would commit genocide.

"I'm not a racist but that was really valuable land those guys were living on."
Craziness? Bored? New mental political agenda that people may disagree with/lose their heads because they disagree no matter their race?

Surely it's possible to think of feasible circumstances but much harder to think when it's actually happened...though it must have done. Still it comes down to defining terms as usual though. Europeans were slaughtering eachother wholesale in the sixteeenth to eighteenth centuries in the name of religion rather than race.
― Henry Frog (Frogman Henry), Monday, 5 October 2009 13:37 (fifteen years ago) link
If you wanted to kill everyone on the planet would you be a racist? I suppose a 'human race'ist, perhaps?
― emil.y, Monday, 5 October 2009 13:39 (fifteen years ago) link
I dunno, hating someone due to religion usually ends up in the fun world of racial stereotypes. xpost.
― I'M LEGALLY A MIDGET (a hoy hoy), Monday, 5 October 2009 13:47 (fifteen years ago) link
What I meant was that "genocide" has a specific sense - trying to wipe out a racial or cultural group - rather than simple mass slaughter in the name of a political ideology/territorial gains.
― The dead-eyed harpy from the hilarious "Tory Party Conference" (Noodle Vague), Monday, 5 October 2009 13:51 (fifteen years ago) link
which is better, in your opinion?
― Brewer's Bitch (darraghmac), Monday, 5 October 2009 14:07 (fifteen years ago) link
lol I was simply hair-splitting about definitions. Obviously any killing on a mass scale is a mere statistic.

I can only express my preferences in mass slaughter thru the medium of a poll.
