there is a little bridge over the humber that is just amazing. goole is a strange and unforgiving place but possesses an almost eastern european beauty, it is the shipping type stuff, makes me think of warsaw. when you go over that bridge into lincolnshire, it suddenly turns into nothingness, emptyness. no, i'm wrong, goole is like calais

gareth, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I did a reading in Goole once. Upon asking directions to the Gateway theatre (stupidly, in the first pub I found, populated by some of the BIGGEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD)I got sent the wrong way and luckily noticed the bloke who'd given me directions and a group of his mates at the end of the road he'd sent me down. As I walked in the opposite direction they cried "come back!" I've never understood why, unless they honestly thought that yelling at me would change my mind, which was firmly set on the course of not receiving a beating. Not a fan of Goole.

Hello future Goolers!

N., Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Should that be Gooleites?

Matt, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Or Goolicians?

Matt, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Goolies?

electric sound of jim, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's a complete shit-hole.

chris, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I remember as a kid in Leeds getting the 166 bus home from town. It said Goole on the front, and I thought that meant all passengers had to go to Goole. Got quite weepy-panicky about this with my mum, even though I didn't know where Goole was.

stevie mitch, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Never been there, but it used to be a running joke in the "Journolists" column in the Mail on Sunday (yes, I know): "the record charts are based on returns from one shop in Goole" etc.

Is it anything like Poole, which I am familiar with?

Robin Carmody, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
no, i think its quite different to Poole. Goole seems kind of...dutch, or as i said upthread...calais

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 15 September 2002 12:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, I see. FWIW Poole is no great shakes as a town, but the railway line approaching the station from the Weymouth direction is spectacular. The station also has one of those views that is completely English, inasmuch as that you can see EVERYTHING: sports stadium, town centre, tower blocks, suburban houses, main road, flyover, car park, port, the sea, and in the distance the countryside. Oddly enough a couple of years ago I was going to do a Martin Parr sort of thing in Poole because it has a *lot* of buildings, shop fronts and the like from that era that I could have photographed. It didn't happen, largely because I got too bound up in my "other activities" (ie writing).

robin carmody (robin carmody), Sunday, 15 September 2002 19:11 (twenty-three years ago)

There's a nice seafood restaurant on the harbour, but I forget it's name.

Matt (Matt), Sunday, 15 September 2002 21:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Poole is a pretty shitty little town, full of townies and evil squaddies. Lovely countryside around it though, particularly the Purbecks.

haha oh jesus

thanks gr80! i think you are super great too, and always secretly worried that you were way too cool for me. like if i took 3d photos of my own life it would look pretty weak tbh.

as far as the strip club thing goes, i'll try to dig it up, but my time in grad school in retrospect was kind of a mistake and i don't have a lot of that crap at hand. but i guess i can search thru gmail can't i! let me see what's up.

i once brought up this particular paper/project in a job interview. whoops!

how do you rate the alt right / d4rk 3nl1ght3nm3nt compared to late 20th century paleoconservatism?

nakhchivan, Friday, 3 June 2016 13:59 (nine years ago)

what do you mean by "rate"

in terms of the ppl i'm familiar with from each there's a huge amt of crossover

goole, Friday, 3 June 2016 16:11 (nine years ago)

for example, which do you find more sinister

nakhchivan, Friday, 3 June 2016 16:14 (nine years ago)

i really don't know. here's my uninformed take:

the paleocons have a strain of quietism that keeps them in a box (though, yeah, tim mcveigh did kill 150+ ppl). they're paranoid and self-separated from american politics but still defined by them, if that makes sense. reverent of the constitution, etc

here's a good read on how the crazies and industry work hand-in-glove: http://harpers.org/archive/2015/02/the-great-republican-land-heist

the new scene kids i'm more afraid of just because they're young. they'll be with us for a long while. they're a fertile idea generator, and i'm fearful of their ability to normalize hierarchy and brutality for more respectable actors -- which orgs like Mercatus and ppl like Glenn Reynolds are doing -- to say nothing at all of the trump phenomenon. they're less specifically american (even anti-american), more concerned with 'civilization'

really tho i see these two sets of people more in continuity than anything

two years pass...

https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2019/05/george-packer-pax-americana-richard-holbrooke/586042/

now don't tell me you're not here for this goole, a 4 bajillion word george packer article about how richard holbrooke was 'our man'

The talking and eating and drinking went on for eight hours. Milošević drank steadily, getting buzzed and then sobering up several times, while Holbrooke lifted his glass of Scotch or slivovic to his lips and barely sipped. He didn’t stick to talking points—he had no real talking points—but let the conversation run its meandering course while looking for openings. Milošević digressed about Serbian wine, the Ottoman empire, World War II, his banking days in New York, the economic future of Serbia. Holbrooke let him go on, enjoying the parley, and then always brought them back to the war.

So a connection formed, with the tense familiarity of two card-playing rogues. Once, in the middle of an endless session, Holbrooke phoned his friend Leslie Gelb in New York. “Hey, man. I’m here in Slobo’s office. I told him you were a Cuban-cigar smoker too, and I asked him if he’d give you some. He said he’d send you a box, but I wouldn’t believe him, because he lies all the time. Don’t you lie all the time, Slobo?”

Milošević was even more direct, sprinkling fuck all over his so-so English, needling Holbrooke: “Richard Charles Albert Holbrooke. Why do you have all those names?” Or: “Why is your collar always up? You’re a politician—all you politicians have something like that. With Tudjman it’s his hair; with you it’s your collar.”
