Have you ever lived with someone who's comfortable at a much different temperature than you are? How did you figure out how to set the thermostat? one of my new housemates is frozen when i'm quite comfortable, so i'm pretty nervous about our place being an expensive inferno this winter...any good stories on this front?

ha, my wife and menopause are making an acquaintance...she's fanning herself all the time and throwing the blankets off, and meanwhile I can't feel my fingers.

one of my friends just told me, "the problem is that women are always the wrong temperature." THAT WAS HELPFUL.

xpost -- Sounds like a perfect excuse to hog all the blankets to start with.

women are always cold. the number of librarian sweaters on display at my work are truly a sight to behold.

It's easier if it's too cold to adjust. It does feel silly wearing multiple layers of sweaters, a hat, fingerless gloves (for typing), boots, and tights under my pants while indoors, but it keeps away the cold. If it's too hot and you have no AC or choose not to use it, you can't just start yanking your flesh off or grow more sweat glands or dramatically increase your surface-to-volume ratio.

NB that's a winter getup I have yet to need to employ since moving from Idaho to New Mexico.

Apparently quoting a George Hamilton biopic I haven't seen but have read about? From a recent review: "There's only one thing you need to know about a woman: they're never the right temperature... So what you have to do is carry a sweater or a jacket with you at all times."

I'm going to have a heating fight w my roommate this winter!!! She's from LA and I'm from Michigan -- it's going to be GREAT even though we don't pay for our heet. I plan to open all the windows as soon as she leaves the house.

I can get cold if I'm sitting still, but if I'm moving around, no way. I heat up pretty damn quick, even to the point of sweating on my walk to the train (and it's only like 55 deg out there). I had to pull my covers up to my chin last night! That's the best.

Yeah I am the same way! I hate New England in the winter because I always feel like it's a race to strip off my coats and sweaters from walking outside, because the walk warms you up and every building is ridiculously hot. I think it's pretty stupid to keep the indoors heated to the point that you can't wear more than a t-shirt in winter, and I can't keep business and schools from doing that, but would hate not being able to wear a sweater in my own house!

Oh man roommate just called an oil company. About $600-700 to fill the tank (which would probably not last us all winter), and $200 service fee, and I'd have to write a check for my portion of that in the next few days, so much for budgeting....I've never had oil heating before, is that normal?!
― Maria, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 14:41 (fifteen years ago)
Sadly, yes. Also, if your roommate abuses the heat, expect that $600-700 to occur monthly.
I had lots of heating arguments with my wife until I showed her the oil bills.

:-(
oh wait, I'm not actually one of those.
― WmC, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 14:50 (fifteen years ago)
Monthly? That's really, really not in my budget, and really, really not acceptable.
Roommate is from Ohio BTW. It's cold there too!
― Maria, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 14:55 (fifteen years ago)
just saying, be careful of the heat if you don't want that amount to pop up every month

No matter how long I've lived in the UK it's still strange to me to see people use hot water bottles so much. I knew of their existence in the US but I'd never used one nor ever seen one in use. Here several people at work sit with them on their laps and they market them with cute/cool covers etc. I'd read about them being recommended for cramps in the US but, again, never seen one used whereas here they're very common. They might be more popular in other parts of the US but it's not like I lived in warm places so idk. Maybe it's because heat is more expensive here? idk.

UK often has towel heaters in or near the bathroom, right? Those rule. Water bottles in the US probably are sometimes used for cramps (that, or electric blankets), but campers use them. You stick them in the bottom of sleeping bags.
The season premiere of For All Mankind, someone stuck in Russia stuffs one in their coat before going out, though whatever place they were shooting in was warm enough that you couldn't see their breath. Probably one of those situations where it's 70 degrees and the actors are acting with their wardrobes.

Yes, many homes have them but I've never used it because I take really quick showers so it never heats up in time. Not a big camper so didn't know that but it makes perfect sense. I think it's the having them at work and the fact that they make them with cute covers and sell them as gifts here is what strikes me.
