What are your favorite animated shorts???

Stop motion, claymation, pencil & paper, Warner Brothers, Adult Swim, music videos (White stripes, paranoid android, etc), whatever you got..

Pixar & CGI are fine for this too, but this is more about the real deal, from real animators.

Youtube links are fun.

I had a couple of VHS tapes a friend dubbed me from the Intl. Tournee of Animation that had some of the funniest stuff I've ever seen in my life. I just did some quick searching and it looks like very little of it is available on youtube.

xpost -- "Jumping" was on one of the tapes -- awesome!

My favorites were two claymation pieces by a Czech guy, can't remember the animator or the titles.

Svankmajer? I'm just guessing.

As a child I saw an incredibly eerie and kind of depressing Eastern European or French animated film that was black and white and involved bird-headed men and women and some kind of maze or labyrinth. It was really melancholy and surreal and spooked the hell out of me (I was young) and I would love to track it down. I think it was part of those "Festival of Animation" feature length collections of animated shorts that used to do the rounds- it looked like it was from the late 70s or early 80s. Any guesses?

(similar in tone to "Planete Sauvage", but darker and more bummed out)

Neotropical pygmy squirrel, Thursday, 15 October 2009 00:36 (fifteen years ago)

It wasn't Svankmajer -- he might have been Polish, now that I think of it. One was about a guy making chicken soup, and the other one was somebody trying to feed their baby.

WmC, Thursday, 15 October 2009 00:49 (fifteen years ago)

I also rather enjoy the Polish animated short (Worker and Parasite was it?) showed by Krusty the Clown when The Gabbo Show wrecked his ratings and Itchy and Scratchy had to be replaced with something cheaper.

Aimless, Thursday, 15 October 2009 00:53 (fifteen years ago)

WmC- Maybe Jan Lenica? "Labyrint" or "Dom"?

Not Lenica either. After a lot of googling, I finally found a name. Not Czech or Polish, but Hungarian — Csaba Varga. The two films are "Az Ebéd" ("Making Lunch," near as I can figure) and "Auguszta etet" ("Augusta Feeds Her Child"). They're stop motion animations of clay plus real food, and they are pants-wettingly funny.

Skhizein by Jérémy Clapin is one of the best in a long time. I saw it in an Oscar shorts programme a couple of years back as a 'special mention' or something and was amazed it didn't receive a nomination. It's droll, somewhat bleak, and showcases the medium beautifully.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxoO3F6N81U

Last week I went along to Ladymation at Onedotzero, where there were a couple of really good films - one paper animation, for which I can find nothing online (maybe Czech) about a boy named Villiam who did nothing but draw, and a Bafta winner showing a day in the life of a midwife, which was heartfelt and refreshingly lacking in sentimentality.
