Is 460,000 yen a month + 158,000 monthly housing unit a good wage?

Should ask my parents but I won't. It's so not done to ask your parents how much money they make, right?
― Nathalie (stevienixed), Thursday, 15 October 2009 20:22 (fifteen years ago)
you could just ask if that would be enough, maybe? It's so hard to know from here.

The lady who served us lunch around the corner from Nakameguro most probably earns less. I think you're safe, Brio; go and have fun.

Take a chance, it is a wonderful country. Really. Although I'd never want to live there myself. hah. My parents however wanna stay there forever and ever and ever. You know any Japanese?

Little bit - understand more than I can speak. I've visited a few times, and have in-laws there so it wouldn't be a total leap into the unknown.

Shit I was gonna be all over this but I wouldn't know about a kid. In any event if I understand correctly and your company is paying for your housing, then that's well over twice what I make, and I live really comfortably here (single tho!). I would guess it's more than my boss makes, too, and he has two kids.
Anyway I agree with Nathalie, try it out! Tokyo is a wonderful city and would be a great experience for you and your family. I would study up on my Japanese though, it will make things a lot easier.

seems like you'd be fine, depending on which neighborhood you lived in. it's more than twice what i made (incl housing allowance) and i saved a lot.

it all depends where you're living now (economies of scale, etc.)
what is your current city and income?

What age is the kid? Two years in Tokyo could be an amazing thing to notch up on the childhood cv.

Yes, that's enough to live comfortably on. You can find a nice 1 bedroom apartment in a convenient location for something like 120,000. That's no problem, but it'll be small by a lot of people's standards. Also, prices will be higher in certain areas that often attract expats, like Hiroo or Azabujuban. I wouldn't recommend living in these areas - they're very nice but too expensive. Instead, look for areas 10-15 minutes by train from the Yamanote loop.
I lived comfortably on MUCH less than that, but I too was single and lived in a shoebox. I know a lot of people who make significantly less than that, have a family, and live fine in Tokyo. It's an expensive city, but unlike many American cities, Tokyo actually has a large stock of relatively affordable housing. Other costs of living are high, but Tokyo isn't significantly more expensive than most major metropolitan centers in G7 countries. At least that's my experience.
I would move to Tokyo in a heartbeat, if I could get the right job.

I think you HAVE to take the chance! Go dude go. Your kid will have fun as well. Tokyo is a childfriendly city. You wouldn't think so, but it is.

is it child friendly if your child, you know, doesn't speak Japanese?
