I read this as a very strong recommendation -- that he was able to get through to the person doing the listening, despite all the faults in production. Like the assertion that great fiction simply translates to whatever language.

http://www.self-titledmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/Lindstrom_005.jpg
Is this true, though? Or is it something more due to reputation? Clumbsy production really can make things unlistenable to me *unless* I've been primed to already think of the substance as being great.
I often think about this in going back to records of bands I loved back in the 80s, when everything had that terrible chorusy sound. For instance, Throwing Muses The Real Ramona - which I love as a collection of songs, but the production is really distracting and I don't think I'd give it much of a chance these days if I hadn't already been predisposed to love TM from their earlier material.
(though perhaps I'm agreeing with you, because the songcraft on that album is outstanding, and shines through the terrible 80s production.)

― Strawberry Letter 22 (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 10:05 (fifteen years ago)
A good hook will get itself heard no matter what it has been decorated with (if we take production to mean decoration, which I guess isn't however I have been always somewhat 'deaf' to the whole issue of production; but on discussion of it I see its role as overevaluated when its talked about as obscuring quality) xp
― xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 10:17 (fifteen years ago)
Production is WAY more than just decoration. The way that a sound is recorded can utterly change the whole quality of that sound. Doing this well can lend a whole new dimension to a piece of music - doing it badly can reduce something amazing to a 2-dimensional cardboard box.
Thing is, someone who's not aware as to what exactly production is or does will not know what's wrong with the piece, they'll just say that it sounds "flat" or "boring" or "lifeless". Bad production can suck the energy out of a piece, destroy the emotional mood.

*Ouch*
Hi Kate.
Actually what got me to look at the thread was that I liked the title of it.
But I'm not though! I remember Brian Eno saying something about how a lot of avant-garde stuff just sounds shitty and sloppy, often on purpose it seems, it makes it more real, man, I suppose
I like Eno but I wouldn't exactly trust him (or anyone) with that assertion; when the technique seems to have been so labouriously worked over a number of years it doesn't make sense to present it badly in a recording of it? The likelyhood is that the conditions under which this stuff was recorded weren't exactly ideal - not that I'd use that as an excuse.
I guess I can tell a scratchy recording from a good one, I shouldn't have said that - but I think enough can be transmitted through.
― xyzzzz__, Thursday, 22 October 2009 09:45 (fifteen years ago)
Ha ha, OK, the title comes from one of Anna's t-shirts. Which has got the most hits of anything I've posted on Flickr in the past few months, it does crack me up.
― Strawberry Letter 22 (Masonic Boom), Thursday, 22 October 2009 09:53 (fifteen years ago)
The likelyhood is that the conditions under which this stuff was recorded weren't exactly ideal - not that I'd use that as an excuse
I would use that as an excuse. On other occasions, like "Lick My Decals Off" (that old chestnut), it's just sheer incompetence.
― The Prince's choice: making a brush. (Tom D.), Thursday, 22 October 2009 09:58 (fifteen years ago)
hello all, I like the thread title.
I often find shoddy production to be a real barrier to listening, perhaps because I am technically minded and can hear the fuckups. Worse though is inappropriate production, too bright and sparkly for a dark and moody or aggressive band seems to be a common crime. (too slow wrt live performance often seems to be inflicted from behind the glass as well).
Less excusable on my part is my reluctance to listen to old crackly recordings. I'm sure I miss out on a lot of great folk and blues from old Smithsonian recordings and the like because I can't listen to a whole disc of gramophone crackle and early tape hiss.
