Yeah, is this an actual "recommendations for a holiday" thread because it would be mental to try and do such a thing. The distances are too vast, you'd spend more than half your trip on a plane.
Or is it more "pick yr fave cities to holiday in, in North America" thread?
If the latter...
VancouverSeattleSan FranciscoNew OrleansBostonMontreal
(didn't pick the obvious NYC because I lived there for so long 1 day as a tourist wouldn't really do anything for me.)
If you want an actual holiday:
Montreal -> Boston -> NYC -> Philly -> Baltimore -> DC but you could do that driving.
Or drop the first two cities off and add maybe Nashville and then New Orleans.
― Strawberry Letter 22 (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 24 October 2009 15:14 (sixteen years ago)
Actually sorry you can probably have two weeks if necessary. So more the latter, I'm just hoping to be inspired about where I may like to visit. want to spend a few days in nyc, and maybe a couple of nights in Vegas to win some holiday money back by poker. The ticket im thinking of buying will allow me to take several more stops
Really would like to hear some good stuff about various cities want to see some places that are diff from one another
― ken "save-a-finn" c (ken c), Saturday, 24 October 2009 16:17 (sixteen years ago)
I'm going to have about a month in total but will also be spending two weeks of it in Hong kong and a couple of stops in Japan perhaps

the east coast is def interesting and cool, but if driving is at all an option/intersting to ken c, then a cruise up the pacific coast (w/side trip to LV) would, imo, be way more rewarding
you get several different flavors of american urban areas punctuated by some pretty spectacular displays of raw american wildnerness!

I would kick off my Burger King tour of the San Joaquin Valley (wherein I patronize Burger King restaurants exclusively and then write informative reviews of each one) in Bakersfield, then up to Visalia, then Fresno (of course!), then Merced, then the tour takes an interesting turn as I forgo the predictable Modesto stop in lieu of Turlock, then probably wrap it all up in scenic Stockton, just in time for the 25th Annual Stockton Asparagus Festival (April 23rd-25th, 2010).

Austin is "cool" but pretty low on sites---it has the Capitol and the bats are interesting. And it's a great place to hang out. But San Antonio has the Alamo, the Riverwalk, the Mercado, and is kinda a world unto itself (like New Orleans in that regard).

you could do

SF to Seattle is a 12-13 drive, according to Google. This is not long by lol hueg america standards, imo, and if partitioned over the bulk of a week (as demanded by the scenery imo) would probably be as much of a highlight as any urban experience you'd get on either end.

― Aimless, Sunday, 25 October 2009 02:45 (sixteen years ago)
I like that multi day drive idea. Aimless you're right of course too. But in fairness I can have more time or visit fewer places if required hoping for a bit of brainstorm really for inspiration and possibilities. I won't have days and days. But plan is to spend at least a day and a night in each place at least if not more

Yellowstone seconded. You could spend a week there every summer for the rest of your life and not see it all.
― kate78, Sunday, 25 October 2009 08:56 (sixteen years ago)
Alternative for a long, spectacular drive would be to start in Calgary or Edmonton and follow the Rockies all the way down, winding up eventually in Las Vegas. It'd be a long & winding road, and it'd take up your entire time in America - not many big cities on the way either - but the scenery'd be incredible and you would feel like a god the whole time.
― Ismael Klata, Sunday, 25 October 2009 08:58 (sixteen years ago)
If the goal is just to spend a day/night in each town, then I'd stick with the smaller towns that are somewhat dissimilar from each other but could manage in a day:
Montreal (Canadian pick, Francophone), or if you want Atlantic Canada, Halifax or St. John's NFCleveland (rustbelt, Great Lakes)Denver (Rocky Mountain meets Great Plains) Seattle Savannah, GA (beautiful south)New Orleans

this may make a difference to the choices, i presume with regards to climate?
i like gbx's fly-drive combo, and march-april would be fine for it. depends on how much cold you want to deal with. Chicago and Montreal will still be really chilly, but the other places most mentioned shouldn't be.
