When do you say goodbye?

9 times out of 10 I say "bye" on the phone AFTER the other person does. Regardless of who initiates the general "we've got to wind this down" vibe. I am very consistent. Are you?

i just hang up midway through the conversation

Mike Hanle y, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I only say it during a dirty phone call.

nathalie (nathalie), Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A very good friend of mine (ok, my boyfriend) always says "bye", or "I'll talk to you later" right at what I usually feel is the middle of the conversation. I could have just made a major point about something, and for him it's the perfect moment to hang up. I should be used to this after about 10 months, but 90% percent of the time it bugs me.

Sean, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My skills with the phone need some work. I either prolong the conversation, offer up, spit up uncomfortable silences, or just interrupt the speaker at inopportune times. Pain.

It's better just to end conversations awkwardly in person.

David Raposa, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think you misunderstand. I'm talking very specifically about the literal leave-taking.

1: "Bye."
2. "Bye."

I am 2. Always. Even if I have rudely interrupted the other person in the middle of their story. It may not seem weird to you, but ever since I noticed it (a couple of days ago) I have seen myself confirm it over and again. It occurred to me that others might have the same kind of consistency, which cd point to some type of severe psychological disorder.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Must be astrological, TH: my disorder goes thus.

A&B [absolutely simultaneously]: "Bye"
A [= me, ie]: "Bye" I don't want them to think I didn't say it after they DID

How do you manage this when the other person initiates the closure? Do you just say "okay" or something like that - the equivalent of a pass?

youn, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(/b) Will (b)this(/b) fix the bold type problem?

Sean, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Guess not.

Sean, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Will this??

Sean, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I feel clever as fuck now.

Sean, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oops. In net-lore that's called doing a Dan Perry. History records not why.

mark s, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two years pass...
I always say bye, I think. Anyway, bye ILX, I think I'm gonna try and take a break for a bit, I'll be back in a month or two. Take it easy, see ya. Though, I may post my weekly prem predictions, as I don't want to lose out. Oh, it's not the done thing to announce this kinda thing, but I did, so bye.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Enjoy the break as you do, good sir. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I may as well take a break too as jel's posts are close to the only things around here that consistently make me realize why I return. I could say good-bye to my grandma out loud yesterday.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

My best.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

They never say "goodbye" in phone conversations in movies/tv shows.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I meant to say I COULDN'T say good-bye. Man...

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Goodbye jel.

isadora (isadora), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Goodbye, Jel and Bryan. You will be missed! Hope you both enjoy your break.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm gone until monday because I'm going to the bahamas so you can all tell me to fuck off.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

No teeny. It's been cold enough there this winter (even with the trip to Rome) I'm guessing that you deserve it.
And I'm not really going to go (sorry hataz). I barely post as it is! I'm just sad jel won't be around. That was a bit of an exaggeration above as there are plenty of people who make coming around here wonderful.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

responding to the original question (but have fun teeny and have a good break jel!)

i find i say bye only when i'm talking to family and extended family (very close friends, s.o. etc)

otherwise the conversation tends to end with a reaffirmation of what was discussed, like "Ok, so we'll se you at 8" or "ok, I'll send that out to the PO Box today" or whatever.

Orbit (Orbit), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

"Okay, I love you, buh bye!"

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 12 February 2004 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

HAHAHAHAHAHAH LUNA!
