Don't want to know how many 40's I drank in college. The worst was when you get down to the bottom and it's all warm, gag-inducing backwash. Making me queasy just thinking about it. I believe St. Ides and Steel Reserve have slightly higher alcohol contents and we used to buy them because of that, despite the fact that they are also the worst tasting. Really, it's a 3-way tie between Olde English, King Cobra, and Colt for me. These always felt pretty interchangeable. I somehow never tried Mickey's and I've never seen Country Club, Hurricane, or Magnum.

Voting King Cobra for the simple fact that it was the first 40 I ever had at the ripe old age of 16.

circa1916 all kinds of OTM, particularly about the alcohol content driving the Steel Reserve purchasing and the nasty warm backwash at the end.

Colt and the 8ball taste pretty decent, though I love Mickey's (prefer the grenades though). The worst malt liquor I ever had was Crazy Horse - it started out like that bottom of the bottle backwash and got grosser.

In college there was a several-years-running theme party called The 3 Mickey's Challenge. The challenge was to drink 3 40's of Mickey's the fastest but if you puked, you were out. I was never the champion, but I never disqualified myself either.

Despite all that I still say Mickey's.

king cobra is solid too. i remember i went to one party and i didn't have any alcohol and it was too late to buy any. so i was pissed that i was even there. but then! one of the hosts had bought like two cases of king cobra. i had never been happier to be drinking warm malt liquor.

40 shits are the worst too. It's like a ropey, slimy texture. Truly heinous.

One of the worst hangovers of my life was caused by me drinking two Colt 45 40s and some scotch. I have no idea why I thought this was a good idea but I was 19 so I'm pretty sure most of my ideas at that age were shit. I had to work at a bookstore the next mornign and kept running to the bathroom to puke. Oh god it makes me a little queasy just thinking about it.

In the late 1980's, Wessinger heard Hip Hop artists singing about malt liquor in their songs. Singing about Olde English, "O E," now several owners away from its birthplace in Duluth, and about his own St. Ides, "the S.T. Crooked I." But Wessinger did not succumb to corporate thinking, which would have said, "Let's have our ad agency produce radio commercials that sound like this Hip Hop." Wessinger was smarter. He commissioned real Hip Hop stars to create the spots, from the sidewalk up.

The resulting songs, recorded and played in the early 1990's, are the stuff of legend. As one writer noted, they "blew the funk up." Artists included King Tee, DJ Pooh, E-Swift and Snoop Doggy Dogg. The work increased St. Ides sales by 25%, and incidentally made St. Ides the malt liquor of choice among white college students. But black and white malt liquor drinkers were not the only listeners. Almost from the beginning, community leaders and public health advocates were outraged by the lyrics. O'Shea Jackson, rapping as Ice Cube, urged his listeners to, "Get your girl in the mood quicker, get your jimmy thicker, with St. Ides malt liquor."

What a product promise! The community could only stand about four more years of that. At one point, public outcry led to the federal government's suspending all St. Ides advertising for three days. That showed 'em! The campaign ended after production of 30 radio spots. The use of sex to sell malt liquor would continue, but Ice Cube had planted the flag on a peak that might never be scaled again.

(Lost in the hue and cry was the fact that Ice Cube's lyric was clearly a lettered homage to poet Ogden Nash, the 20th century American master of light verse, whose poem "Reflections on Ice-Breaking" reads in its entirety:

i think i've told this story before, but the one and only time i drank power master i woke up the next day at noon naked on the kitchen floor. had basically no memory of the night before.

i wasted a summer (or two?) doing this as a start to most nights out, which were most nights. mostly excellent. seems like forever ago, i barely ever want to drink now and the 40 era is why i usually binge when i do drink. king cobra is kind of underrated, eight ball way overrated, st. ides is wack. i fucked w/ natural ice and a bunch of other 'ice' ones that came out in 40 form at the same time but theyre not ml huh

I didn't realize (until now) that Crazy Horse was no longer widely available. Given the name that makes sense. In college I drank it a lot, not just because it was cheap but also because NEIL YOUNG MAN (lol college). Naturally when Neil Young came to town my friends and I thought it made sense to drink lots of Crazy Horse before hand; at least it made Blind Melon a whoosh of fun.

Steel Reserve is not malt liquor, but it will fuck you up right quick & then make you pay & pay. Seriously, of all the varieties mentioned on this thread, that is the stuff to avoid at all costs.

Bell's made 40s - I demand proof of this (I have had their malt liquor on draught at the Bell's brewery - it was only OK imo, but would probably taste a lot better out of a 40 oz.)

Country Club isn't bad...anyway, i'm surprised there are no Magnum takers, given that it has always been the cheapest...i used to get two or three of those in a day when i was living in 0berlin, unemployed, not going to school, and very sad. then my gut started getting big, so i switched to the sixer of Natty Light tall boys for $3.
