Zing Touch: ILX now ON IPHONE (and ipod tooches too)

After spending forever in review, the ILX iPhone app has been approved.

WHAT IT CAN DO
- Read and post to ILX (or the Sandbox or any other server running a really recent version of ConversationBoard for that matter)
- Set and delete bookmarks
- Automatically check for updated bookmarks
- See pictures in posts, resized for the screen
- Open Youtube and links in its own browser
- Quote post text
- Easy bold and italics in the post composer
- Post drafts automatically saved until you delete or post them

COMING SOON
- Polls: Right now the threads are displayed, but the options aren't there and you can't vote
- Starting a new thread

WHAT IT WON'T DO
- Work with the old-style bookmarks. If you've set them in preferences, unset them to use Zing.

WHAT IT NEEDS
OS 3.0 or better (if you've got an old iPod Touch you'll have to upgrade, but 3.0 is miles better anyway)

Zing Lite is free on the app store. There is also the buy-Stet-a-pint version, Zing Touch, which is £4.99/$7.99 and will probably get new features first. Right now they are identical, except for some wee ads in Zing Lite.

Featurerequests: reordering of boards in the board list, so I can drag my favourites to the top. And those little filled-or-hollow bullet points that tell me whether there are new posts in a thread.

The update is live on App Store now and I really think it’s finally sorted both that search bug and the awful “won’t refresh after being in the background” bug. It’s also faster.

Say I’ve blocked user x, normally using zing I see the (blocked, click to unblock this post) message.

I haven’t changed or reinstalled the app but first I thought my blocks had disappeared so I tried it out on user y. Closed the app, went and played Balatro. Returned to whatever thread I was in, user y now unblocked.

I don’t think Zing uses anything that needs better than iOS 14, so it should in theory work, but Apple makes it really hard to test on versions of iOS that old. I’ll see what I can do

Have fixed the poll and the blocked users issues (sorry about those) and will send a version to Apple.

devvvine: I've tried running it on an iPhone 7/iOS 15 simulator and it seems to work OK. Can you try deleting and reinstalling from the App Store?

wow this looks like butt on iOS beta — I might not get it fixed in time for the new iOS release next month but I’ll try.

The new update has broken the block function

User block works but thread mute has the exact same issue atm (mute thread, leave the app, come back and thread is unmuted). Obvs not a priority but if you could take a look the next time you are working on things I’d appreciate it. Thank you!

Also, one other *very* small thing: the use of underscores to denote italics is kind of ugly looking in the formatting? When you click into an individual post it looks fine though.

Small thing I’m noticing is that when I click into a post the font is noticeably smaller – def. smaller than my system font. It’s small enough that I’m not loving reading posts in that view.

Not urgent but maybe something to put on the list for the next iteration.

Ok one other small thing, this is crashing when I try to view in landscape (something I rarely do but noticed when I wanted to view a pic more closely).

Me too, that’s happened through several versions. Although I tried it just today and it worked.

I've never heard of topic muting. Where is that supposed to be applied?

Basically everywhere. If you hit the info button when looking at a thread and choose “mute”, the thread should in theory vanish for you - won’t appear in New Answers, Bookmarks or Search.

It is working for me in the current dev version so I’ll push that out and we can see if it fixes it for everyone

(It only applies per-device - just that Zing on that phone or iPad will mute)

Thank you - I’m quite a distractible, irritable person at times and it’s a godsend to not have to read some of the more “whimsical” titles for threads I have no interest in.

It must be said, I find many thread titles annoying and would use mute for that function but I cannot explain how viscerally disgusting I find the band name “Scraping Foetus Off The Wheel” so whenever this comes in I’m going to be really happy to never see that again.

I should say that ilx in general, and Zing in particular, are luxuries for which I’m grateful every day.

Have a bug on iPad version, not sure if it came up already, where the thread list will not appear until I flip the iPad in landscape
