Saw this half an hour ago and assumed there'd already be a thread.
I've never sat thru The Equalizer and I've always assumed it was just some lol 80s chance for Woodward to get real paid, which is fine. But everybody ought to try and see as much Callan as they can, in which EW comes on as the anti-Patrick McGoohan and made one of the greatest bleak dirty espionage shows of all time. And then there's The Wicker Man, obv, which would've sank into obscurity with almost any other actor in his role, I think.

Major feature of Soho and Village New York in the late '80s: Equalizer filming and production trailers scattered all over the place.

A handful of the Equalizer episodes, especially early on, were quite good and have some fantastic scenery chewing from the Late Great Ewoo Woowoo.

RIP Equalizer. I met him briefly twice, just a room service waiter delivering his cheese omelette, double order of french fries, gin, coffee and ice water, when he was in Natchez shooting "Uncle Tom's Cabin" in 1986. (Same order both nights.)

his sgt howie is one of the best acting performances i've ever seen. also the inspiration for one of my favourite jokes back in the day; the one with the "ewar woowar" punchline. r.i.p.

I have one of his albums (This Man Alone, I think) and will play it tonight. RIP

Very sad... Apart from the obv stuff I enjoyed him in BBC's 'Five Days' recently. He also did this last year: http://acongregationofghosts.com/ which is a great role for him and one last chance to see him in something new.

Ever since I first heard that gag about 20 years ago he has only ever been Mr Woowar round here. Genuinely sad to hear this, as NV says upthread he totally makes the Wicker Man and I loved The Equalizer as a kid. RIP.

That really is a fantastic tribute, spot on comment about Tarantino.

Breaker Morant too middlebrow for a mention, eh?

Needless to say, my plan for more anecdote time paid off and I got to hear many of Edward’s amazing stories. This includes the one where while filming in Australia for Breaker Morant, a man walks up to him during a hike in the outback and introduces himself. As ‘Edward Woodward.’ He met his Australian namesake in the middle of the desert.

"Callan" was pretty groundbreaking, but nobody remembers it anymore so it doesn't get mentioned in obits etc

haha:
While the original Wicker Man (hell, it pains me to even have to preface the title with “the original”) still has a great cult following, there is a generation growing up that only know The Wicker Man (2006) as a camp classic thanks to internet mash ups of Nicholas Cage screaming about bees.
