Xiffy Pup (Eric H.), Tuesday, 17 November 2009 19:32 (sixteen years ago)

out of what i've seen it's between rushmore, the third man, last temptation, or 39 steps. probably really between the first two. i'd feel weird voting for something over the third man, but i think rushmore is really the best film of its kind.

jØrdån (omar little), Tuesday, 17 November 2009 19:37 (sixteen years ago)

I'll rep for The Unbearable LIghtness of Being and the overlong Charade.

Hell is other people. In an ILE film forum. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 17 November 2009 19:38 (sixteen years ago)

passion of joan of arc... this movie still knocks me on my ass.

t0dd swiss, Thursday, 19 November 2009 03:30 (sixteen years ago)

Brazil. It's my favorite movie ever, though there are plenty of great, great films on this list.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 19 November 2009 03:57 (sixteen years ago)

The Third Man, but wow, some amazing choices there.

President Danny Glover (Millsner), Thursday, 19 November 2009 03:58 (sixteen years ago)

can't imagine much being better than the 3rd man.

omaha deserved 311 (call all destroyer), Thursday, 19 November 2009 03:59 (sixteen years ago)

The Third Man, easy, followed by Brazil, Le Million, Rushmore and Cleo in a tie.

my full five minutes of iguana time (contenderizer), Thursday, 19 November 2009 04:09 (sixteen years ago)

Cleo really is incredible.

But, you know what, fuck it, I'm going with Life of Brian.

fields of salmon, Thursday, 19 November 2009 04:26 (sixteen years ago)

The Third Man which I only just saw for the first time pretty recently.

bear say hi to me (ENBB), Thursday, 19 November 2009 04:32 (sixteen years ago)

cleo used to be one of my favorite films ever, but i watched it again recently and it didn't stand up to some of the other things on this list... but the "sans tu(?)" song scene is so incredible.

Alf, Lord Melmacsyn (s1ocki), Thursday, 19 November 2009 06:50 (sixteen years ago)

rushmore pretty special tho, tbh

Alf, Lord Melmacsyn (s1ocki), Thursday, 19 November 2009 06:50 (sixteen years ago)

I'm finding it basically impossible to choose between Joan of Arc and Cleo.

Xiffy Pup (Eric H.), Thursday, 19 November 2009 12:12 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Thursday, 3 December 2009 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

A list of films that are pretty unfuckable with! I voted "Brazil", it's one of my faviourite ever films.

mu-mu (Pashmina), Thursday, 3 December 2009 00:46 (sixteen years ago)

flipped a coin and gave it to Joan

really senile old crap shit (Eric H.), Thursday, 3 December 2009 04:59 (sixteen years ago)

I gave a big ol' vote to the runt of the litter -- Carnival of Souls!

The Viceroy (Viceroy), Thursday, 3 December 2009 07:37 (sixteen years ago)

i voted joan, but i don't think carnival is a bad vote. it's a pretty amazing movie.

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 3 December 2009 07:44 (sixteen years ago)

Close one!

really senile old crap shit (Eric H.), Friday, 4 December 2009 03:44 (sixteen years ago)

I am strangely disappointed that Joan of Arc didn't win.

Third Man is great, no doubt, but...

t0dd swiss, Friday, 4 December 2009 04:36 (sixteen years ago)

what cunts gave fucking Chasing Amy two votes?

Cosmic Ugg (S-), Friday, 4 December 2009 04:38 (sixteen years ago)

CHASING AMY - 2

THE MAGIC FLUTE - 0
LE MILLION - 0
YOJIMBO - 0
AUTUMN SONATA - 0

wtf guys

President Danny Glover (Millsner), Friday, 4 December 2009 11:06 (sixteen years ago)

yojimbo is the only one of those goose-eggs that disappoints personally, though magic flute and le million may well be the best mozart adaptations and french screwballs of their time for all I know

da croupier, Friday, 4 December 2009 14:13 (sixteen years ago)

and the 2 for carnival of souls is even more baffling than voting chasing amy, imo

da croupier, Friday, 4 December 2009 14:14 (sixteen years ago)

carnival of souls was my favorite movie for years! sure, it's far from technically perfect, but that's part of the fascination for me. it's so effective at producing its dreamlike effects out of thin air, or for a nickel, which I believe was the movie's budget. it's not just a shallow shocker, it really rolls up its sleeves and gets at the madness, alienation, sexual frustration, the fear of mortality behind the horror show.

the ending is so powerful + poetic. you could watch the final scenes and say, "cheapo twilight zone ripoff with some wooden actors, great", but I look at it like, there's a doctor, a priest, and a cop confronting the mystery of death. religion, science, the law, they can't save you, welcome to the abyssss, that's some existential shit right there.

鬼の手 (Edward III), Friday, 4 December 2009 14:37 (sixteen years ago)

I *love* The Magic Flute but I couldn't rate it above The Passion of Joan of Arc, there's something so pure and absolute about the performances in that; also, as an adaptation of another artwork "The Magic Flute" doesn't feel all that freestanding- to me, for an adaptation to truly ascend to this, er, poll-winner level it has to step free from its source a bit more (so, say, Kurosawa's "Ran" achieves its greatness by its strategic distance from "King Lear").

twice boiled cabbage is death, Friday, 4 December 2009 15:13 (sixteen years ago)

Carnival of Souls may be one of the greatest American horror films from the pre-Night of the Living Dead, era, and prefigures that one too.

really senile old crap shit (Eric H.), Friday, 4 December 2009 18:33 (sixteen years ago)

one month passes...

man, i don't know if i'm gonna make it through the rest of this magic flute

brews before HOOS (s1ocki), Saturday, 30 January 2010 19:08 (fifteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

OK, just finished this 25. Here's my top 10 and bottom 5. Again, based solely on personal preference.

1. Charade
2. Monty Python's Life Of Brian
3. Vagabond
4. Brazil
5. Yojimbo
6. Rushmore
7. Carnival Of Souls
8. Chasing Amy
9. For All Mankind
10. Peeping Tom

~~~
21. The Unbearable Lightness Of Being
22. The Orphic Trilogy I: The Blood Of A Poet
23. The Night Porter
24. The Magic Flute
25. The Orphic Triology III: Testment Of Orpheus
Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 25 February 2010 14:47 (fifteen years ago)
I honestly can't imagine what type of person sits around and rewatches their Criterion box set of the Orphic Trilogy
Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 25 February 2010 14:49 (fifteen years ago)
I can't imagine anyone willingly sitting through Chasing Amy.
queen frostine (Eric H.), Thursday, 25 February 2010 15:03 (fifteen years ago)
what type of person sits around and rewatches their Criterion box set of the Orphic Trilogy
Probably the folx who will be on line for the Bruce Willis-Tracy Morgan cop comedy
Fusty Moralizer (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 25 February 2010 15:33 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, i was asking for those zings. The first five K-Smith movies are kind of dear to my heart since they came out in that time I was stuck in Floriduh from aged 14 to 21. So, yeah, I'm gonna like them more than The Magic Flute. I'm not gonna lie to y'all.
Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 25 February 2010 15:36 (fifteen years ago)
I actually just re-watched Chasing Amy for the first time as an adult, and could really see all its faults for the first time (ugh, the fucking soundtrack is the worst), but there's some pretty amazing bits in there too.
Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 25 February 2010 15:38 (fifteen years ago)
Not really meant as a zing. I get it, different strokes for different folks. Just really hate Kevin Smith's contributions to cinema is all. I'd rather sit through the two Criterion'd Michael Bay movies a dozen times than see anything else by KS get added to the collection.
queen frostine (Eric H.), Thursday, 25 February 2010 15:42 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, I don't really see K-Smith as a good director, just a gifted dialogue writer with a camera (which is why I also like early Linklater stuff, etc). Almost like a foul-mouthed playwright who uses movies aimed at 17-year-olds as his medium. I mean, comparing a Kevin Smith movie to a real movie is like comparing the Watchmen to Pynchon. You're OMG FRONTING if you say "it's one of the best novels of the 20th century," so enjoy it for the pulpy fun it is.
Some more riffs:
•For All Mankind is the type of jam that Blu-Ray is made for. I wish I had a bigger TV
•The Night Porter is maybe the most boring "erotic" movie I've ever seen.
•Carnival Of Souls is the move, and I totally wish I had some cult movie filmed in my hometown that I could obsess about (this one was filmed in Lawrence, KS)
•I wasn't expecting Rushmore to hold up, but it blew me away just like it did in 1998.
•I'm real sad I never paid attention to Agnès Varda, because her stuff is incredible.
Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 25 February 2010 15:50 (fifteen years ago)
I'm no Mozart stan, but I find The Magic Flute quite delightful.
Fusty Moralizer (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 25 February 2010 15:52 (fifteen years ago)
I mean, I'm gonna file The Magic Flute in the "idgi" pile. I was never really the biggest fan of classical music, opera, Bergman, or "delightful," so there's really not a whole lot in there for me
Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 25 February 2010 15:56 (fifteen years ago)
comparing a Kevin Smith movie to a real movie is like comparing the Watchmen to Pynchon
So when you're ranking these out, you're ranking KS against his own stuff/milieu rather than actually ranking him against obvious cinematic greats, et al?
queen frostine (Eric H.), Thursday, 25 February 2010 16:06 (fifteen years ago)
again, when i'm ranking, it's just personal preference.
Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 25 February 2010 16:07 (fifteen years ago)
the 4 all mankind blu-ray is ~amazing~
