This is, in all seriousness, the best news story ever

I was kinda ;_; after the 'his wife died' part, but i mean hard to keep sympathies all the way through that.

I'm not sure that's an actual rabbi, as opposed to just Bob Hoskins in a big hat.

tbh that's all i look for in a rabbi.

At some point it stops being grief and becomes a useful excuse for being an enormous cockfarmer.

Like that episode of Curb Yr Enthusiasm when Larry uses "my mom died" as an excuse for wriggling out of everything?
― Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Friday, 20 November 2009 12:21 (sixteen years ago)
My favorite part is how he says he kept large quantities of pure cocaine on hand not to deal, but because he didn't trust the quality of the stuff on the street, which TBF is exactly the kind of thing you'd expect an old rabbi to say.
― Tracer Hand, Friday, 20 November 2009 12:22 (sixteen years ago)

Officers found an equal amount of the drug at Chalomish's home in Prestwich, in the heart of Manchester's Orthodox Jewish community
OK this may get like 6000 "so what"s from Mancunian ILXors but since I am from far away it jumped out at me: a good but long-lost pal of mine was from a Jewish family in Prestwich, wondering if this guy was his rabbi at any point now
(prob not as I don't believe his family was Orthodox, but still, dude is surely enjoying this news story)

― Bay-L.A. Bar Talk (Hurting 2), Friday, 20 November 2009 18:53 (sixteen years ago)
or make this film, seriously
well see on the grief/cockfarmer thing, I'd submit that like one or maybe two days of coke-binging and prostitutes might be getting your kicks, but a week straight, to the point where you haven't slept in days and even the people profiting from you realize you're killing yourself, is going to be a nightmarish addictive/compulsive pit of pain and nihilistic despair and self-loathing and psychic desperation
not saying I necessarily feel incredibly bad for the guy but it's not as if he was blithely having fun
― oɔsıqɐu (nabisco), Friday, 20 November 2009 18:57 (sixteen years ago)

I don't know, I think this is the definition of "fun" (as opposed to fun, meaning yes OF COURSE there are a million things incredibly, horribly wrong going on here and absolutely dude is using baldly destructive behavior which, when done in moderation, is looked upon as decadent self-indulgence but in this case is clearly an attempt at prolonged suicide).
― lift this towel, its just a nipple (HI DERE), Friday, 20 November 2009 19:08 (sixteen years ago)

― slowcoreenactsfrustrationdoubtandevenfearofneverbeingfulfilled (jdchurchill), Friday, 20 November 2009 19:20 (sixteen years ago)
I guess all I'm saying is that any kind of destructive binging will cease to be actually enjoyable pretty quickly. Like binging on and throwing up huge amounts of food surely isn't super fun or delicious, it's a compulsion built on psychic pain. Being a porn addict who masturbates for hours to the point of wounding yourself surely doesn't feel conventionally "good" after a while, except insofar as it's satisfying some deeper compulsion. A drunk three days into a bender isn't like "yay, this bender is fun." Being on coke without sleeping for three days straight surely isn't going to feel very good either -- your body and mind will be a painful wreck, and you'll be continuing it mostly out of addiction, compulsion, fear, the inability to think of short-term alternatives, and probably a good amount of the shame and self-loathing and desperation most end-stage drug addicts are full of. It's a pretty craven state, isn't it? Same with the sexual part, really. People in these situations tend not to feel incredibly good about themselves, and the compulsive satisfying of base nihilistic impulses (more drugs, more hookers) doesn't just not provide happiness, it stops providing even temporary satisfaction.
― oɔsıqɐu (nabisco), Friday, 20 November 2009 19:29 (sixteen years ago)
Anyway I am mostly just impressed with this guy's general cardiovascular health. You'd think a week-long sleep-deprived pure-cocaine-and-parade-of-hookers binge would put most men his age in a really bad cardiac situation.
― oɔsıqɐu (nabisco), Friday, 20 November 2009 19:33 (sixteen years ago)
i don't really think it's fair to compare compulsive masturbators and bulimics to people on coke binges or drinkie-poo benders. yes they are all addicitve behaviors, but don't they all work in different ways?
the coke and alcohol (at least this is my understanding of this) are directly pleasuring their brains in ways that sticking your finger down your throat or choking your chicken aren't.
― jazzgasms (Mr. Que), Friday, 20 November 2009 19:34 (sixteen years ago)
and directly pleasuring the brain like that=tricking the brain to think it's having "fun" when really it's a total trainwreck situation
― jazzgasms (Mr. Que), Friday, 20 November 2009 19:35 (sixteen years ago)
Actually, the most fascinating thing about "Sex Rehab with Dr. Drew" is watching these people go through sex withdrawal and how they exhibit a lot of the same physical and emotional symptoms of people going through substance withdrawal.
― lift this towel, its just a nipple (HI DERE), Friday, 20 November 2009 19:36 (sixteen years ago)
So I don't think they're as different as you would assume.
well yeah the sex freaks and coke addicts are a lot closer in terms of their perspectives, probably, than say the bulimics, i agree with that
― jazzgasms (Mr. Que), Friday, 20 November 2009 19:38 (sixteen years ago)
xpost - yeah, that's definitely true! but lighting up those pleasure centers isn't the same as experiencing pleasure, especially when everything else in your body is falling to bits. you'll just turn into a lab rat, continually pushing the button to keep the pleasure centers lit up, and after a while lighting them up won't even be pleasurable; it'll just feel like a necessity / addiction / compulsion. (I mean, nicotine gives you a dopamine rush, too, but soon enough lots of people don't experience smoking as a lovely treat; they experience it as something they have to keep doing, even if they're disgusted with themselves over it.)
bulimia's definitely different -- just an example of how a compulsive behavior isn't necessarily making you feel good in a "fun" sense.

Alls I'm saying: from the information we have here, this rabbi probably had a really good time fucking hookers and snorting coke. Nothing in the news article suggests that he's been addicted to hookers and blow for years, which is, I imagine, how long you'd have to be addicted to something (and obviously it differs for different substances and situations) before the pleasure stuff wears off and you feel like a lab rat.
― jazzgasms (Mr. Que), Friday, 20 November 2009 20:00 (sixteen years ago)
Nabisco's assertion, I think, is that excessive binging like this will burn you out on ANYTHING, regardless of how long you've been doing it.
― lift this towel, its just a nipple (HI DERE), Friday, 20 November 2009 20:02 (sixteen years ago)
well yeah! but i think it takes longer than we would think for the pleasure stuff to fall off. i was strictly talking about these participants (esp. the rabbi) and what we know of them.
― jazzgasms (Mr. Que), Friday, 20 November 2009 20:06 (sixteen years ago)
