anyone watching this?

looks like a better version of the P Stark design thing - young artists fight for 3 years of studio space. (is also very similar to Celebrity Art School from a few years ago, which i liked)

hope emin and collings are involved until the end.

she should've used all the screws on that bath rail.

the flock of starlings thing is so played out.

i can do without the 1 minute potted art histories though.

sorry, i'm mesmerized by the retrograde elitist english craziness that is "grumpy old women"

Tracer Hand, Monday, 23 November 2009 22:25 (sixteen years ago)

They didn't even bother writing to me to say that I hadn't been selected, so nope not watching!

hey it's (jel --), Monday, 23 November 2009 23:51 (sixteen years ago)

i enjoyed this! <3 matthew collings, emin's pretty great too

just sayin, Thursday, 26 November 2009 10:39 (sixteen years ago)

Enjoying this so far. Eugenie keeps looking like Kate from Lost.

Not the real Village People, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 05:59 (sixteen years ago)

This sounds like something I would want to watch - bump when it's on DVD plz.

Bay-L.A. Bar Talk (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 06:13 (sixteen years ago)

he's never going to appear though, is he?

missed the first half (have a 3-way clash at 9 on mondays) but caught the gist of it. ghost huts reminded me of something. liked the buckyhemisphere just because it was a buckyhemisphere.

was pleasantly surprised that it was all popular with the public.

koogs, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 10:05 (sixteen years ago)

hurting, it will never be on dvd is my guess but you can torrent it from here

http://thebox.bz/

i think that's open registration but if you need an invite then give me a shout.

Last night's show was pretty good but i couldn't understand why they got rid of all the painters in round one. where's the diversity? Matt, the tall guy who builds the rooms, is obviously the most talented here. saar (sp?) is the least talented and most annoying. him and eugenie are clearly artists-as-lifestyle-choice rather than genuinely having ideas or talent. saar also speaks like a deaf person but doesn't seem to be deaf and, since he talks a lot, he would have mentioned that and certainly would have made work about it. him and that other guy's ghost huts were the worst, most obvious, one-note kind of thing a school student would have come up with. sam and suki's thing was simplistic as well but at least the boat with the reflector in it at least looked very beautiful even if the pier part didn't work (aesthetically or practically).

they made the right choice for the winner in the round but i my be biased by the fact that i find matt extremely attractive...

jed_, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 10:07 (sixteen years ago)

saar also speaks like a deaf person

looooooollllll otm

having only watched the first episode, I think eugenie and saad are awful. emin basically filled in the blank when eugenie was questioned on what her whistle and handle 'meant'. saad reminded me of christian from project runway, which immediately discoloured my view of him:

suki chan's video was v.beautiful but also seemed v.adult and tame

really liked matt's installation

that installation artist whose computer draws hands looked like a hairy mark gatiss

coz (webinar), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 10:37 (sixteen years ago)

> suki chan's video was v.beautiful but also seemed v.adult and tame

the flocking starlings thing has jumped the shark. it was good when springwatch did it (and boids is a computer graphic standard), but already had the waterskis on when they used similar footage in that advert. that an artist would exhibit it after that is odd.

koogs, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 10:56 (sixteen years ago)

(i like that in that picture though)

koogs, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 10:57 (sixteen years ago)

Last night's show was pretty good but i couldn't understand why they got rid of all the painters in round one

there's still one painter right?

just sayin, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 11:07 (sixteen years ago)

Yes, but he never went to art school and he does lovely paintings for customers who say things like "I'd like something beige to put in this space". Which is fine, but it doesn't say "painting is my passion"

I did at least like the fact that Saad went and did a little bit of research to inform his piece (even if it was just talking to his mate who used to live in Hastings). People seemed to appreciate that. Did painter guy contribute anything at all?

trishyb, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 12:15 (sixteen years ago)

i forgot that guy was a painter.

trishy, i think it's pushing it to call what saad did "research".

jed_, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 12:52 (sixteen years ago)

saad's face looks like he has falsers

I liked the painter's non-commissioned paintings! The self-portrait with the gas mask/beak type thing that I couldn't get a proper look at.

Zoe Espera, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 13:35 (sixteen years ago)

It was pleasant to look at, but it just seemed to me like Jamie Hewlett's potato printing class.

trishy, i think it's pushing it to call what saad did "research".

You're right. I was just trying to find something to like about him.

trishyb, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 13:56 (sixteen years ago)

I liked Saad in the one episode I saw - video piece on the swing was actually very good.

The BFD (suzy), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 14:00 (sixteen years ago)

i liked the guy with the handwritten war and peace but i think i am in a minority. noddy holder reviewed this on the radio last week and said a lot of them looked more like con artists. harry hill had a dig on saturday too.

koogs, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 14:21 (sixteen years ago)

loved collings' analysis of eugenie

saad's a fanny

SKATAAAAAAAAAAA (webinar), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 09:31 (sixteen years ago)

eugenie's work was pretty crappy but at the same thought it was the one piece that offered any kind of critique of aristos, stately homes, the nature of patronage etc

Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 09:39 (sixteen years ago)

saad is v annoying

just sayin, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 09:46 (sixteen years ago)

saad came out of that badly, i think. despite being lauded for the piece by saatchi (meh, i thought).

eugenie also dropped the ball. had the drill been working it'd've been ok but as a still life it looked a lot like a diy project. house owner seemed to like it though, reading more into it than was there.

koogs, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 09:48 (sixteen years ago)

Oh please, they'll keep Eugenie in until the last possible second for reasons of rowr. Guy with the big glass ball of wine jelly was easily the best work; Saad's work was meh in this one (also got his mum to do his homework basically) but what I haaaated was the hissyfit he pulled on the artist he had t share his room with.

I bloody hate Saad and his tiny shoulders after watching this last one. If anyone's a chancer, it's surely him. He keeps saying his work "talks about" one thing and then changing it when he thinks of something else (first the chapatis spoke of giving and love then spoke of books when Suki wanted to do a book theme) and he also blames other people for 'not understanding' his work.

One thing I really like is the panel - they manage to explain things clearly and make sense, without banging on about how the art is "about" stuff. A good counter-balance to some of the bollocks that often gets spouted around contemporary art, and it's refreshing when they do pull people up on the bullshit.

Not the real Village People, Friday, 11 December 2009 06:12 (sixteen years ago)

I thought collings was especially acute in the last episode when he was giving his precis of what each of the contestants was 'about'

cozwn, Friday, 11 December 2009 08:51 (sixteen years ago)

surprise winner!

koogs, Monday, 14 December 2009 23:40 (sixteen years ago)

Here is the artwork in question, can you tell whose it is yet?

special vixens unit (suzy), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 00:08 (sixteen years ago)

i want to give matt a cuddle....

the right piece won for sure but i think matt is the one with real potential.

jed_, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 02:34 (sixteen years ago)

"suki and ben, you haven't really featured in this episode at all but i have to tell you that you haven't won..."

jed_, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 02:55 (sixteen years ago)

it is a nice piece, those things are always fascinating. but she had nothing to do with it at all. (cue readymades argument). i've disliked everything else she's ever done aside from the bath rail and whistle (and she needed to screw that onto the wall better than she did).

glad that the other bloke was also asked to participate and that she'd lent the studio out for the year she wasn't using it.

koogs, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 09:42 (sixteen years ago)

yeah no doubt matt was the most deserved: most talented, most potential, on top of which he seems like a very nice, sweet bloke

despite eugenie's general snake oilyness there's no disputing she created something visually arresting and meaningful; can't help but wonder how she's going to store that in future

(9/9/8/9) (cozwn), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 09:47 (sixteen years ago)

(and she needed to screw that onto the wall better than she did)

haha, otm. "Bloody half-a-job" as my dad used to say.

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 09:51 (sixteen years ago)

hey man, it's all part of her aesthetic!

i'm bit suspicious that the camera happened to be with eugenie when she found the found object.

suki chan's thing was terrible, as was sam's VdG generator.

jed_, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 10:04 (sixteen years ago)

how many screws do you need to hold a whistle and a cord?

jed_, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 10:05 (sixteen years ago)

the handle thing had 3 holes in each end, 120 degrees apart. she only used the outermost two.

koogs, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 10:38 (sixteen years ago)

i'm bit suspicious that the camera happened to be with eugenie when she found the found object.

I didn't think it was. Must watch this again.

I actually thought they displayed it really badly in the Hermitage, though. The lighting cast all these weird shadows on it and made it look less ordinary than it did in the Saatchi gallery.

It was the right result all round. Matt was/is definitely the better artist (and the only one of them who really seems prepared to put any serious effort into his work) but that was an amazing find.

trishyb, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 20:26 (sixteen years ago)

i agree that the hermitage display of it was very poor.

jed_, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 20:44 (sixteen years ago)

what about that foam grappling hook though? o_O

jed_, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 20:45 (sixteen years ago)

lol eugenie's foam grappling hook was like bad claus oldenberg, and def agree abt the hermitage display doing her found piece no favours, but she was the only artist in the prog whose work provoked and surprised me in any way at all - i mean, give me eugenie's nerve & bullshit over matt's corny caravan, complete w. zany 'characters' who appeared to have stepped out of a vivian stanshall rock opera

Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 22:23 (sixteen years ago)

btw loved this prog and hope they do another one
