Reading murder books, trying to stay hip

I'm in the middle of my first Henning Mankell novel - quite fun. Classic noir themes plus post-cold-war European politics. Never really got into mysteries before - what do you like?

Is it really considered to be hip? Never realized. I read (as in past tense) a shitload of murder books, but I tend to forget titles/authors and content tbh. Fossum, Cornwell,... I still have Stieg Larsson awaiting to be read but I'm not sure now since my husband didn't like it so much.

larsson isnt great, mankell is much better as swedish detective novels go. sjowall and wahloo are the best tho.

A Firing Offense by George Pelecanos and Homicide by David Simon are hip because they are so old (early '90's) and the ultimate roots of The Wire that hot show from the last 10 years.

Just noticed a new one at work by some guy named Jim (something) that has a Ken Bruen quote calling him the "Texas Dennis Lehane" on the back. that's damn hip. can't remember the name though right now.
