What are your favorites? What are the worst? Sequels in general are usually shit but with a genre founded so much upon individual scenes/moments, sequels almost seem like an opportunity to improve.
S: Hellraiser II, Nightmare on Elm St. 3, New Nightmare, Return of the Living DeadD: Nightmare on Elm St. 6: Freddy's Dead, Return of the Living Dead 3 (ugh)

this is otm. lot of classic horror flix are sequels. wouldn't count return of the living dead among them, though. that's more a mock-sequel horror comedy that became a franchise of its own. and brian yuzna's rotld 3 is great! why did you not love? super cheezy and maybe not for everybody, but i dug it. not really worth it unless it's the crazy gory "unrated" version tho (of course, of course...)
others:
dawn of the deadday of the deadhalloween 3 (fans hate it, because they are wrong)bride of frankensteinfinal destination 2texas chainsaw massacre 2 (a masterpiece!)evil dead 2: dead by dawn

It was just mostly a hideous-looking woman whimpering and crying and occasionally lashing out and killing people. And lots of running.

I'm hard-pressed to think of any that haven't already been named. Having just recently watched the lot of them, I'll rep for Nightmare On Elm St. IV, directed competently and entertainingly enough by a young Renny Harlin. Ummmmmmmm...oh, Exorcist III is pretty 'fresh'. Or 'dope'. Whichever you prefer.
― I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 1 December 2009 12:46 (fifteen years ago)
Is it 'funky fresh' or 'wacky legit'?
― Stevie D, Tuesday, 1 December 2009 13:20 (fifteen years ago)
I had a dream last night than a friend gave me a dvd feature titled EVIL DEAD GENIE.
― Nate Carson, Tuesday, 1 December 2009 21:58 (fifteen years ago)
But otherwise, Evil Dead II & Hellraiser II are better than the originals.
Also Inferno is great and Mother of Tears is, if not great, at least Argento's best work in years.
― Nate Carson, Tuesday, 1 December 2009 22:00 (fifteen years ago)
Friday the 13th Part 2 is a lot better than part 1 IMO, although all of them are pretty terrible. Part 7 would be really fun if they had left in the gore.
Texas Chainsaw II is good.
Evil dead 2 and Army of Darkness are classics.
― Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 1 December 2009 22:04 (fifteen years ago)
I'm a little confused by the praise for Hellraiser 2, I thought that was pretty silly.
oh yeah Exorcist III seconded. One of the weirdest, wackiest movies ever released by a studio.
― Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 1 December 2009 22:05 (fifteen years ago)
Matt, perhaps you've never seen Hellraiser 2 on acid. It's a phantasmagoric nightmare that's more surrealist art film than horror. The main problem is that they didn't have 1/10th the budget to create what they were shooting for, so you have to fill in some gaps with your imagination (or chemical assistance).
― Nate Carson, Tuesday, 1 December 2009 22:08 (fifteen years ago)
Like you have to be able to make the leap that people can wear other people's skin.
With proper suspension of disbelieve, and allowing for some flawed fx and bad acting, Hellraiser 2 is one of the best movies ever.
:)

SEED OF CHUCKY!
and nate otm: hellraiser ii rules. some of the trippiest & most fantastical imagery/ideas ever in a commercial horror flick. love exorcist iii, too. love any movie that gives like a third of its screen time to brad dourif ranting about devil shit.

All of the Phantasm sequels are worth watching, but I'm sure everyone knew that already.
― WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Tuesday, 1 December 2009 23:24 (fifteen years ago)
The first Phantasm broke my brain into eight pieces. Do the sequels just, like, dance on the pieces or something?
― I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 1 December 2009 23:56 (fifteen years ago)
Ugh, Hellraiser 2 is terrible. Terrible, terrible, terrible. All of the sadism and nihilism of the first with none of the wit, flair or tautness.
― james cameron gargameled my boner for life (Pancakes Hackman), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 00:13 (fifteen years ago)
Hellraiser 2 has some memorable imagery, but the story just falls to pieces, especially the stuff about Pinhead and company as innocent, unwitting victims of the giant spindle thing (Leviathan, IIRC?). What made them scary in the first place was the idea that they had done all that horrible shit to themselves willingly.
The one thing that always sticks in my mind from HR2 is the doctor Cenobite's laughter mixed with a dentist's drill on the soundtrack. Ew.
And Bride of Frankenstein OTMFM. Vastly better than the original in nearly every way, which is no small achievement.
― More Butty In Your Pants (Telephone thing), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 00:43 (fifteen years ago)
Probably no one will agree but one of the few recent horror sequels that actually improved on the original IMO was Hostel 2.
― tectonic p (latebloomer), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 04:07 (fifteen years ago)
No, I really rate Hellraiser II as well. Kenneth Cranham is great, and Clare Higgins is just stunning in both movies. The craziness works for me.

That's about right. Each subsequent one tries to expand on the previous (with the exception of part 2, which is more or less a remake of the original...but worth seeing anyway.)
― WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 18:15 (fifteen years ago)
final destination 2
^good film. The whole build up to the highway pileup scene is awesome.
― DavidM, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 18:30 (fifteen years ago)
Phantasm 3 and 4 are big piles of crap. But I will still go see part 5 someday.
I mean, I've sat through 10 Hellraiser films now and only 3-4 of them are good.

I think Nightmare On Elm Street 2 is actually really good - kind of the Dennis Cooper version of Freddy.

Wasn't there a Children of the Corn sequel which involved the spooky kids moving to a big city & growing evil corn in an alleyway or something?

Elm St. 2 is good only in that it is interesting to view it as a metaphor for repressed homosexuality, because it works very very well.
― Udon Nomi (Stevie D), Thursday, 3 December 2009 02:10 (fifteen years ago)
unsure if it counts, but even if the original Cabin By The Lake was pointless and awful it still looked like the Godfather compared to the sequel
