No, Kelly is talented--he just needs someone to keep him in check. THE BOX could be a lot tighter, but lots of it works (e.g. the really nice atmosphere and Langella). Also the score is incredible:

Movie looks good and there are moments when you think it might have a fun conspiracy to reveal in the end, but ultimately it is just an asinine series of twists

Yeah, I'm not sure if I would call the ending "shitty," but this criticism pretty much sums up Richard Kelly's biggest problem: he likes to complicate things to eyerolling degrees.

dude should make a remake of eraserhead because I always thought that movie was missing elaborate sci-explanations for every surreal moment and a shot of Jack Nance walking through a watery time portal.

it was weird to me that i could instantly recognize the boston public library in this, though i prob havent been there in ~5 yrs

xp: The problem isn't so much the "explains things in excruciating detail" part (after all, I liked "Inception"), it's that I tend to find the things he wants to explain not worth explaining. He seems to have a knack for identifying exactly the type of story I couldn't possibly care about less (usually dressed in the trappings of the type of story i love the shit out of) and then banging on about it for seemingly 500 hours.

i thought this was great-looking and fun its def my fave kelley. i liked its rich storybook quality & how seamlessly it moves. also the stuff @ the country club when the 'mystery' is first getting revealed is p creepy and good.

there are a lot of dumm parts but they dont ruin it for me

the library bit is the only part i really disliked, tho tbh i can't remember it all *that* well

the part where he pulls back the curtain is the worst, i guess, if only because its the steampunk contraptions are so stupid looking
