Looks interesting (apparently based on on old Twilight Zone episode!) and has mixed review. Anyone seen it?

I think I remember it being really lame.

water coffins
This is one of the shittiest movies I've seen in recent memory. And I watch a lot of shitty movies.

Is Richard Kelley the new Shyamalan?
― A brownish area with points (chap), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 01:29 (fourteen years ago)
No, Kelly is talented--he just needs someone to keep him in check. THE BOX could be a lot tighter, but lots of it works (e.g. the really nice atmosphere and Langella). Also the score is incredible:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvf8dX11H8s
― ok (Tape Store), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 01:35 (fourteen years ago)
yeah, i thought the atmosphere was A++

good film. couple weak points.
― moholy-nagl (history mayne), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 01:51 (fourteen years ago)
what Tape Store means to say is that this movie wasn't Inception so obv that means he can endorse it
― yelawolfenstein (San Te), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:55 (fourteen years ago)
"Is Richard Kelley the new Shyamalan?"
The Box vs The Devil would make a good poll.
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:59 (fourteen years ago)
Btw I never read "Button, Button" but I cannot for the life of me comprehend why someone wouldn't think the original ending isn't a million times better than shitty close of The Box.
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 03:03 (fourteen years ago)
Movie looks good and there are moments when you think it might have a fun conspiracy to reveal in the end, but ultimately it is just an asinine series of twists
― Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 03:40 (fourteen years ago)
Have seen this popping up on one of the movie channels a lot lately, had no idea it was by the Donnie Darko guy. I thought they made him stop making movies after Southland Tales
― boots get knocked from here to czechoslovakier (milo z), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 04:39 (fourteen years ago)
okay, the wiki entry makes it sound like the shitted up a great story ending
― boots get knocked from here to czechoslovakier (milo z), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 04:41 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah, I'm not sure if I would call the ending "shitty," but this criticism pretty much sums up Richard Kelly's biggest problem: he likes to complicate things to eyerolling degrees.
― ok (Tape Store), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 05:20 (fourteen years ago)
and then explain everything in full detail
― da croupier, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 14:50 (fourteen years ago)
dude should make a remake of eraserhead because I always thought that movie was missing elaborate sci-explanations for every surreal moment and a shot of Jack Nance walking through a watery time portal.
― da croupier, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 14:51 (fourteen years ago)
it was weird to me that i could instantly recognize the boston public library in this, though i prob havent been there in ~5 yrs
― johnny crunch, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 14:55 (fourteen years ago)
xp: The problem isn't so much the "explains things in excruciating detail" part (after all, I liked "Inception"), it's that I tend to find the things he wants to explain not worth explaining. He seems to have a knack for identifying exactly the type of story I couldn't possibly care about less (usually dressed in the trappings of the type of story i love the shit out of) and then banging on about it for seemingly 500 hours.
― Indolence Mission (DJP), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 15:00 (fourteen years ago)
man i just read the plot synopses for The Box, 'button, button,' and the original short story. whadda hack
― kanellos (gbx), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 15:22 (fourteen years ago)
The problem is that Kelley has a terrible directorial instincts because he's basically a terrible director.
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 15:24 (fourteen years ago)
Ha that too
― Indolence Mission (DJP), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 15:27 (fourteen years ago)
in terms of self-indulgence dude pretty much makes gilliam look like a withdrawn auteur
― O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 16:06 (fourteen years ago)
haha see now thats what happens when you start using auteur as a sort of placeholder w/o paying attention to what it actually means lol at me.
― O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 16:09 (fourteen years ago)
i thought this was great-looking and fun its def my fave kelley. i liked its rich storybook quality & how seamlessly it moves. also the stuff @ the country club when the 'mystery' is first getting revealed is p creepy and good.
there are a lot of dumm parts but they dont ruin it for me
― Hyrule's (Lamp), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 17:39 (fourteen years ago)
the library bit is the only part i really disliked, tho tbh i can't remember it all *that* well
― moholy-nagl (history mayne), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 17:42 (fourteen years ago)
the part where he pulls back the curtain is the worst, i guess, if only because its the steampunk contraptions are so stupid looking
― Hyrule's (Lamp), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 17:45 (fourteen years ago)
we discussed this on another thread
