She is soooo great. She just did a whole batch of Black Friday commercials for Target, floatin' around YouTube.

I just relistened to her first two comedy albums upon the purchase of the third. If you dig good standup, I can't recommend any of them highly enough. The last bit on the new album slayed me. "I'm a husk."

I thought about starting this thread like 30 times but always forget when I'm actually on ILX

johnny crunch, Sunday, 6 December 2009 00:32 (fifteen years ago)

She's one of those comedy people that I'm shocked isn't a huge star. She's so super-talented, much more so than a lot of her more successful peers.

Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Sunday, 6 December 2009 00:34 (fifteen years ago)

dig her, has she done voice over work? seems like she was bawn for it

it's like 10,000 goons when all you need is a trife (m bison), Sunday, 6 December 2009 00:35 (fifteen years ago)

honestly the first time i saw her i thought the weird voice thing was this horrible cutesy affectation, at least until she dropped into one of her impersonations and was like dang, now i see why she does it, it makes the clarity and precision of her characters so much more sharply defined

i know its duh obvious but i am consistently impressed by the fact that she is doing impressions of anonymous people that may not even exist, but that still seem totally spot-on and ~like~ people i have met or encountered before

Re: voiceover, she did a voice in the movie Barnyard and its TV spinoff. Also a show called WordGirl which I've never seen.

She truly is an angel.

Jouster, Sunday, 6 December 2009 01:03 (fifteen years ago)

an enchanting angel

iiiijjjj, Sunday, 6 December 2009 02:12 (fifteen years ago)

I can't stand her.

bear say hi to me (ENBB), Sunday, 6 December 2009 02:15 (fifteen years ago)

She ruined the otherwise funny Comedians of Comedy for me.

bear say hi to me (ENBB), Sunday, 6 December 2009 02:17 (fifteen years ago)

I just can't get past her incredibly annoying voice. Even those two amazing fat snoring pugs on her couch don't make me want to watch more than 2 mins of that video. I just don't get it. :(

bear say hi to me (ENBB), Sunday, 6 December 2009 02:30 (fifteen years ago)

haha the ambient pug snoring throughout lends it such charm

her god impression was spot-on imo

iiiijjjj, Sunday, 6 December 2009 03:11 (fifteen years ago)

Is Maria the new Gilbert Gottfried (as in, having a voice that turns people off)

Jouster, Sunday, 6 December 2009 04:11 (fifteen years ago)

Posehn and Patton ruined CoC more than Maria did (what I'm saying is her and Zach are funnier than those two guys).

Jouster, Sunday, 6 December 2009 04:12 (fifteen years ago)

^^ Crazy talk. Patton > Galifinakis > Posehn > Bamford

☆ ★彡☆ ★彡☆ ★彡 (ENBB), Sunday, 6 December 2009 04:14 (fifteen years ago)

Patton is not funnier than Zach, who has comedy "in his bones" as I've heard some people describe it.

Jouster, Sunday, 6 December 2009 04:15 (fifteen years ago)

No way! I like Zach but Patton is about a million times funnier than all the others imo.

☆ ★彡☆ ★彡☆ ★彡 (ENBB), Sunday, 6 December 2009 04:17 (fifteen years ago)

It makes me sad that there are people who don't like the Bammer. She seems so imminently likeable! And it seems weird to dislike her act because of her voice, since she probably only uses her real voice during about 1/3 of her act.

Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Sunday, 6 December 2009 04:50 (fifteen years ago)

¯\(o_°)/¯ sorry!

☆ ★彡☆ ★彡☆ ★彡 (ENBB), Sunday, 6 December 2009 04:54 (fifteen years ago)

honestly the first time i saw her i thought the weird voice thing was this horrible cutesy affectation, at least until she dropped into one of her impersonations and was like dang, now i see why she does it, it makes the clarity and precision of her characters so much more sharply defined

yeah it's like i see all this and it's a horrible cutesy affectation, way more 'impressive' (and annoying) than funny from what i've seen.

unforgivable Jaqness (tremendoid), Sunday, 6 December 2009 05:03 (fifteen years ago)

I met her in Chicago. I was walking down Broadway and saw her, said a celebrity hi, like you do. Learned she was playing a show abt 4 blocks away, ended up going (spectacular) and had a quick beer with her and a classmate of mine who apparently grew up in her same neighborhood afterwards. Just really sweet and really funny in normal conversation without being at all 'on'.

Dig all the CoC, but my ranking is prob Patton > Maria > Zach > Brian.

ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Sunday, 6 December 2009 05:29 (fifteen years ago)

MB really shines on the 20 webisodes appended as a second disc of Unwanted Thoughts Syndrome, but there's a scant 90 minutes of polished material there, and the snippets of her standup I've seen are really patchy. She's really on in interviews, so I think her talent would be better served by improv rather than solo; I hope she can find Tracy Ullman or Amy Sedaris type vehicles. Mayber her present fans are recognizing part of themselves (or maybe relatives) in the Bammer character (diet coke slurping manic depressive OCD introvert spinster with pet surrogates), but as with kooky relatives, sooner or later we want them to vacate the couch.

Biodegradable (Derelict), Sunday, 6 December 2009 06:05 (fifteen years ago)

i think she wins a lot of points with me whenever she does a minnesotan character, is the thing.

crazy farting throwback jersey (gbx), Sunday, 6 December 2009 17:39 (fifteen years ago)

I only discovered her this summer when I came across her How To Win! album on Spotify. She seems like she should really be insufferably grating and twee, but the album was pretty good tbh.
I see her new album is on there now. I'll check it out.

radric in manehattan (some dude), Sunday, 6 December 2009 18:44 (fifteen years ago)

If any of you ever get the chance to see her live, do it! Her comedy albums and tv appearances don't do her justice.

I think my favorite bit of hers is when she leaves phone messages as the baby jesus for her religious mother.

She has new direct-to-fan $5 download of a set filmed in her living room w/her parents as the only audience. It sounds self-indulgent and it kind of is, but it is also bizarre and intense and well worth a watch. She gets very personal in it. During the credits at the end, her parents share their thoughts on it and they are very sweetly midwestern – and also the mom criticizes some of her jokes for being mean.

Can any cool LA people confirm/deny that Mark McGrath is actually a cool dude irl? Or did mria & the writers go after him specifically because he is not cool and that's the joke? And did they let him in on it? How do you do that without hurting his feelings? Or does he not have those.

I didn't make it past the annoying agent at the restaurant, and judging from this article she plays a pretty big role in the series? I'll probably pick it up again because I really like Bamford, but I like her because she's quiet, surreal and creepy. I don't know how much I can deal with the loud brashness.
