Torn between Gloppy and Plumpy. Would challenge Lord Licorice to a duel.

I don't even remember Candyland having characters, and definitely not those. Did I play some off-brand version of Candyland or am I just old or what?

mascara and ties (Abbott), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 20:14 (fifteen years ago)

My neighbor Melody, when I was five, always stacked the deck so she'd get the Queen Frostine card, which puts you the farthest ahead. She refused to play unless she got to shuffle the cards & she'd end up with Queen Frostine every time. It was just ridiculous.

mascara and ties (Abbott), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 20:16 (fifteen years ago)

Let it go, dude.

hiya there y'all!

Weirdly I never played this game when I was growing up

I think it's funny that they changed the molasses monster into the melting chocolate monster, like I guess the thinking is that molasses is just too obscure for today's kids?

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

a full circle lol (J0hn D.), Sunday, 13 December 2009 00:13 (fifteen years ago)

Ha ha. Yeah. The (characterless) board that Jenny posted above is the one I remember, so I don't know WTF you youngsters are even talking about.

Zoo Snickers (Deric W. Haircare), Sunday, 13 December 2009 01:56 (fifteen years ago)

This poll was inspired by recently playing a version of the game from circa 2003 or so, I think? It says something on the box to the effect of "now featuring the colorful characters of Candy Land!"

Anyhow, I wish I had been able to find better images of the characters online. The ones I posted here don't quite do justice to the artwork on the board on which I was playing. For example, on the version that I was huddled over, Gloppy was not standing upright but was rather this practically limbless, Jabba the Hut-like hulking mass of melted chocolate pudding Cosby icepop. The various other members of the sugared aristocracy also looked many times over more sinister than they do in the images posted upthread. It seems that they've been somewhat sanitized and defanged in later versions, something like the makeover of McDonaldland characters over time...

dell (del), Sunday, 13 December 2009 17:11 (fifteen years ago)

in the version I saw, they all looked like they wanted to kidnap children and eat them or turn one into confectionary, unlike the neutered Mac and Me renditions upthread that just wanna make friends

Can't not vote for Gramma Nut.

(Totally straying off topic here, but why would anyone ever think that that hideous hobgoblin would help sell hamburgers? He looks like someone who'd touch your son wrong in the McDonald's restroom.)

Why would they change "Queen Frostine" which has a pleasant rhyme to "Princess Frostine" which is grating and unwieldy on the tongue? Imbeciles.

Euclidian pizza mathematics (reddening), Sunday, 13 December 2009 23:58 (fifteen years ago)

This also reminds me of that time on MST3K when they met the space children and played Candyland with them. "Molasses Swamp! My own personal hell!"
