holy fuck. i did beowulf, augustus caesar and gizmo and it got them all, and way too quickly.

aarrissi-a-roni, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:08 (fifteen years ago)

it got tim smith of cardiacs after a load of REALLY vague questions and one incorrect guess (elvis costello)#

o_OOOO

i think the beauty of this thing is that every time someone plays it, it gets better and obtains a wider database

102. LJ: British. 5. (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:11 (fifteen years ago)

struck out on joel cairo. thank the lord tbh, was creeping me out.

aarrissi-a-roni, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:15 (fifteen years ago)

didn't have one-time Charlton hero Chris Powell! :D

102. LJ: British. 5. (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:16 (fifteen years ago)

This thing took wayyyy too long to figure out Paddington.

mascara and ties (Abbott), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:17 (fifteen years ago)

wtf! it was nowhere near augustine of hippo and then it pulled him out of the bag. it was like 'is he indian?' no 'is he jewish?' no 'Augustine of Hippo'. wtf?!

aarrissi-a-roni, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:19 (fifteen years ago)

It got Mr. Hat pretty quick but it asked in two different ways if he wore a hat, which made me laugh.

mascara and ties (Abbott), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:20 (fifteen years ago)

This is like the 20 questions thing my kids own and I guess how the algorithms kinda work but it's pretty mind-blowing when it guesses Leopold Bloom from some quite vague questions.

Noodle. Tool. 2. Kool (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:21 (fifteen years ago)

I beat him with Stephen Pastel.

emil.y, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:23 (fifteen years ago)

it didn't have Xenophon. feel like i can relax now.

aarrissi-a-roni, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:26 (fifteen years ago)

Ha NV the first time I picked up that 20 questions game my friend thought of 'pussy' and it asked for its final question, 'Is it pussy willow?' ("Does it bring great joy to many people?" "Yes.")

mascara and ties (Abbott), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:27 (fifteen years ago)

lol

I just beat this guy with Félix Guattari so I can sleep soundly now.

Noodle. Tool. 2. Kool (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:29 (fifteen years ago)

this is fucking amazing

famous tuamos (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:29 (fifteen years ago)

asking him about obscure characters it wouldn't have in a million years isn't "beating" anything, guys

famous tuamos (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:30 (fifteen years ago)

a) "obscure"
b) it adds to the database so it can improve in future
c) he told me I beat him

Noodle. Tool. 2. Kool (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:32 (fifteen years ago)

....aaaaand after a slip-up involving neal morse, it gets an ilxor

102. LJ: British. 5. (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:32 (fifteen years ago)

took him 40 q's and three guesses to get werner herzog!

Simon H., Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:33 (fifteen years ago)

like it was all vague for 12 questions and then it asked if he had a mustache, and then it knew it was john holmes!

famous tuamos (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:34 (fifteen years ago)

^^^yeah this shit is like whoa

102. LJ: British. 5. (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:34 (fifteen years ago)

Noodle you are either an annoying college freshman or an legitamately sick adult agoraphobe if you don't think Félix Guattari is obscure

famous tuamos (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:35 (fifteen years ago)

it got king buzzo in 20 questions!

famous tuamos (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:37 (fifteen years ago)

o lollllll after it beat me for Ishmael I was going for Moondog, and it guessed Scatman John. Although I suppose a beard doesn't count as a moustache. I'll try again...

FC Tom Tomsk Club (Merdeyeux), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:37 (fifteen years ago)

Charles Manson - decidedly not Moondog.

FC Tom Tomsk Club (Merdeyeux), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:38 (fifteen years ago)

Rong again, Akinator. Not every indie songwriter I think of who does not wear a beard, is not black, and plays folk songs is J0hn D, sheesh

big darn deal (Z S), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 02:02 (fifteen years ago)

ianmaxwell, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 02:05 (fifteen years ago)

ianmaxwell, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 02:09 (fifteen years ago)

102. LJ: British. 5. (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 02:11 (fifteen years ago)

this thing is sick. played it a year ago or so and can only imagine it's gotten harder to beat since

sonderangerbot, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 02:26 (fifteen years ago)

stumped him with Charles Bovary

囧 (dyao), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 02:38 (fifteen years ago)

Just stumped it with Kathleen Hanna.

★彡☆ ★彡 (ENBB), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 02:56 (fifteen years ago)

Wait shit - it got her on the second round. Damn.

★彡☆ ★彡 (ENBB), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 02:57 (fifteen years ago)

Beat him on:
Asmus Tietchens
Joe Meek

pfennig dreadful (doo dah), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 02:58 (fifteen years ago)

Got Hieronymus Bosch but beat him with Enrico Palazzo.

★彡☆ ★彡 (ENBB), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 03:12 (fifteen years ago)

this is shit. it asked if player is of british origin and then suggested ole gunnar solskjaer.

I sb'ed your mum (ken c), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 03:28 (fifteen years ago)

he doesn't know teddy sheringham very well

I sb'ed your mum (ken c), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 03:29 (fifteen years ago)

also thought craig charles was julian barratt (this was after the question: is your character black - partially)

I sb'ed your mum (ken c), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 03:37 (fifteen years ago)

beat him w/ Phil Drummond

bnw, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 03:41 (fifteen years ago)

what about Bill Drummond

102. LJ: British. 5. (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 03:44 (fifteen years ago)

he got stuart murdoch of belle and sebastian very quickly but guessing that's because all internet nerds did it

I sb'ed your mum (ken c), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 03:50 (fifteen years ago)

r kelly, on the other hand took 3 goes.

I sb'ed your mum (ken c), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 03:51 (fifteen years ago)

and needed the question "has your character ever been accused of being a paedophile"

I sb'ed your mum (ken c), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 03:51 (fifteen years ago)

This is all fun and all until it has a big enough base to find Sarah Connor- if you catch my drift.

Tooth Far I (csa), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 04:01 (fifteen years ago)

Got : Gulliver Foyle from The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester
Didn't get : Mary Henry from Carnival Of Souls

The people of Ork are marching upon us (Matt #2), Saturday, 12 December 2009 01:24 (fifteen years ago)

Beat it with Philip Jose Farmer, D. Boon and R. Crumb. (It picked Philip Roth for the last.)

WmC, Saturday, 12 December 2009 01:26 (fifteen years ago)

I'm probably picking characters that are way too obvious (Seinfeld, Jason Bourne, Alvy Singer, Robin the Boy Wonder), but it's batting 1000 so far. Time to dig deep.

Zoo Snickers (Deric W. Haircare), Saturday, 12 December 2009 01:38 (fifteen years ago)

It got Stuntman Mike super quick. Damn, this thing is good.

Zoo Snickers (Deric W. Haircare), Saturday, 12 December 2009 01:40 (fifteen years ago)

got: Dolly the cloned sheep (though it guessed Mother Teresa in the first round, and I'ma not even gonna try to make sense of that)
didn't get: Mary Hopkin

elegaroo (unregistered), Saturday, 12 December 2009 01:45 (fifteen years ago)

It got Pat from SNL, but I finally stumped it with Strong Guy from X-Factor. Boo ya.

Zoo Snickers (Deric W. Haircare), Saturday, 12 December 2009 01:46 (fifteen years ago)

It got Todd Rundgren with a frighteningly low number of really vague questions. Weird.

Zoo Snickers (Deric W. Haircare), Saturday, 12 December 2009 02:14 (fifteen years ago)

got: Dolly the cloned sheep (though it guessed Mother Teresa in the first round, and I'ma not even gonna try to make sense of that)

hahaha

Pfunkboy : The Dronelord vs The Girly Metal Daleks (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 12 December 2009 13:28 (fifteen years ago)

Is he European? Yes.
English? Yes.
On TV? Yes.
something to do with cooking? No.
cars? No.
animals? Yes.
Is he older than 50? Yes.
Is he sarcastic? No.

David Attenborough!

David Attenborough!

StanM, Saturday, 12 December 2009 13:35 (fifteen years ago)

Just beat it with Scott McDonald, but it got Artur Boruc on the 20th question (one of which was, after establishing he was a European goalkeeper who had played at the 200 World Cup, "does your character appear in a manga?")

ailsa, Saturday, 12 December 2009 13:51 (fifteen years ago)

Didn't notice someone had already done Jeff Stelling on here. It took about 25 questions to get him, after first guessing Terry Wogan.

ailsa, Saturday, 12 December 2009 13:54 (fifteen years ago)

Couldn't get Dean Gaffney, it guessed Declan Donnolly and Jeremy Kyle

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 12 December 2009 14:34 (fifteen years ago)

Got SuperHans off a pile of really vague stuff, but didn't get Becky Granger from Coronation Street.

ailsa, Saturday, 12 December 2009 14:43 (fifteen years ago)

It got Jack Duckworth

Pfunkboy : The Dronelord vs The Girly Metal Daleks (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 12 December 2009 18:59 (fifteen years ago)

Awesome game!

Nathalie (stevienixed), Saturday, 12 December 2009 20:37 (fifteen years ago)

lol at "has your character killed humans" when they worked out I was talking about an ex-footballer working for a TV channel. So, obviously, it guessed Frankie Boyle. (was Charli

ailsa, Saturday, 12 December 2009 20:43 (fifteen years ago)

e Nicholas. I win. Again)

I have no idea what happened there.

ailsa, Saturday, 12 December 2009 20:43 (fifteen years ago)

didn't get: Anastasia Krupnik, Drew Daniel, St. Anselm of Canterbury, Jean Genet (!), Felix Gonzalez Torres, Agnes Martin. But it did get yer wan from lost in translation after the vaguest questions

plaxico (I know, right?), Saturday, 12 December 2009 20:45 (fifteen years ago)

Didn't get Alex Katz

plaxico (I know, right?), Saturday, 12 December 2009 20:48 (fifteen years ago)

Hang on, I just had "is your character gay" "no" "is your character homosexual" as two consecutive questions. It also keeps asking things like "is your character from a Balkan country" after I've already said they are from Australia.

It got Anton Du Beke after 30 questions, but the first guess was Barry Scott from the Cillit Bang adverts.

ailsa, Saturday, 12 December 2009 20:52 (fifteen years ago)

It also keeps asking things like "is your character from a Balkan country" after I've already said they are from Australia.

To get people for whom users answer incorrectly, it can't trust the answers its given absolutely (for instance, it got Nadine Coyle even though I unthinkingly said 'yes' to "is this person English". So if the only thing separating your Harry Kewell from its Hristo Stoichkov is that you said 'yes' to 'are they australian', it needs to check, and it knows that "are they from a Balkan country" is a good way of doing that?

Gravel Puzzleworth, Saturday, 12 December 2009 22:24 (fifteen years ago)

It got Iolo (from Ultima) after 15 tries, but it missed Phil Judd, Robert Silverberg, Nikki Sudden, Andrew Plotkin, Graham Nelson, Ally (from Photopia) and Black (from Jigsaw). I think I made the thing dump core after the last few tries, so I had to stop.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Sunday, 13 December 2009 00:06 (fifteen years ago)

Haha CGLD - I tried Primo Varicella!

Gravel Puzzleworth, Sunday, 13 December 2009 00:23 (fifteen years ago)

beat it with peggy olsen, it guessed ally mcbeal

things that make you go (hmmmm), Sunday, 13 December 2009 03:01 (fifteen years ago)

34 to get Werner Herzog now, and it seemed like it was so close... "Is your character a film director" "Is your character German" - then goes off into "Is you character linked with videogames" and wastes nine more questions.

smashing aspirant (milo z), Sunday, 13 December 2009 03:44 (fifteen years ago)

beat it with oscar robertson

things that make you go (hmmmm), Sunday, 13 December 2009 04:41 (fifteen years ago)

beat it first time out with W. Edwards Deming

El Tomboto, Sunday, 13 December 2009 05:23 (fifteen years ago)

I beat him with Curtis Mayfield(!) and Orpheus(!!).

Tuomas, Sunday, 13 December 2009 11:32 (fifteen years ago)

beat it with chris ware

that is a whole discussion within itself that is worth debating (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 13 December 2009 16:05 (fifteen years ago)

And yet it totally guessed Jimmy Corrigan the other day...

"Is your character a film director" "Is your character German" - then goes off into "Is you character linked with videogames" and wastes nine more questions.

Right? This thing wastes questions like Americans waste food. And it seems to ask the same questions or contradictory questions ("Is your character green?" "Yes." "Is your character orange?") all the time. Still, it's beat me on a number of seemingly obscure attempts (I toughened it up after my first few attempts, which it guessed all too quickly).

Zoo Snickers (Deric W. Haircare), Sunday, 13 December 2009 16:40 (fifteen years ago)

It may have guessed Chris Ware's Jimmy Corrigan, but it didn't guess the original Jimmy Corrigan, aka The Spectre.

Tuomas, Sunday, 13 December 2009 20:49 (fifteen years ago)

I beat it with Brian Krakow.

krakow, Sunday, 13 December 2009 20:59 (fifteen years ago)

Right? This thing wastes questions like Americans waste food.

Check 'details' after its guessed - if the "expected answer" was blue, it was trying to learn the answer to a question even though it already basically knew who yr dude was.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Sunday, 13 December 2009 21:34 (fifteen years ago)

Beat it with Patterson Hood

smashing aspirant (milo z), Sunday, 13 December 2009 21:52 (fifteen years ago)

Beat it with Carver from the Wire

musically, Monday, 14 December 2009 07:05 (fifteen years ago)

haha i beat it with matthew yglesias, its final guess was ned raggett

things that make you go (hmmmm), Monday, 14 December 2009 07:45 (fifteen years ago)

OMG this thing

First tried Lady MacBeth (trivial), then Marty McFly (once it asked "does your character play the guitar" only 14 questions in, I knew I was beat), was floored when it correctly picked The Undertaker after 30 questions and one wrong guess.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 14 December 2009 12:08 (fifteen years ago)

It got Misawa and Liger in one guess, dude

MPx4A, Monday, 14 December 2009 13:55 (fifteen years ago)

I bought the app from iTunes and suddenly today it started asking the questions in French; there is no language selection option so I'm not sure what to do...

musically, Monday, 14 December 2009 18:12 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, it was saying rejouir for a long time

plaxico (I know, right?), Monday, 14 December 2009 18:22 (fifteen years ago)

i think the key is thinking of people like Jean Baudrillard.

And now my dick is where? Oh, this is too rich (the table is the table), Monday, 21 December 2009 15:15 (fifteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

M****** D. R*******
i was thinking of david tibet last night. at first it got osama bin laden, but then it got dt on the second try.

tbf I'm impressed that it only took him 25 questions to come up with Shkreli. "Is your character bad" was the clincher.

small doug yule carnival club (unregistered), Monday, 11 January 2016 01:07 (nine years ago)

Just schooled him. He doesn't know many speedrunners apparently.

El Tomboto, Monday, 11 January 2016 02:20 (nine years ago)

Stumped him with David Axelrod the musician.

Austin, Monday, 11 January 2016 02:55 (nine years ago)

He doesn't know Stanislaw Lem stuff very well either.

Austin, Monday, 11 January 2016 03:10 (nine years ago)

Took 46 questions to get Shostakovich, although tbf there were a few answers I didn't know and didn't feel like looking up.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Monday, 11 January 2016 03:24 (nine years ago)

Beat it with Amiri Baraka

something seems broken though, it asked questions that were effectively the same multiple times.
