Sites that have reaches all of their target demographic

Inspired by seeing a friends excited link to (and discovery of) xkcd - I would have thought that *everyone* predisposed to reading xkcd would know about it but apparently not?

What sites can you think that everyone who'd care is already aware of? Are there young poli-wonks who've never heard of 538? Music geeks who've never heard of spotify?

The funny thing is that obvious choices like youtube say are totally wrong - there are probably tons of ppl who'd really like youtube, but just use yahoo videos or whatever 'cos it's all they've ever heard of.

Uh, by "their target demographic" I maybe mean more like "everyone who'd really enjoy them"

Like: BLDGBLOG would be enjoyed by many architecture geeks who've never of it, whereas I'd imagine most potential slashdot enjoyers are at least, like, *aware* of slashdot.

I'd say Ravelry has covered all its bases - over 500k knitters/crocheters worldwide and every other knitter I've come across is either a member or aware of it.

All the knitting people I know IRL who don't use ravelry are either technophobes or like 90 and can't be bothered.

Does Ravelry actually advertise anywhere? I found out about it from my step-daughter.

Does Knitta Please still exist? I don't knit but I liked the name...

I think xkcd's appeal goes beyond the techie dude crowd that seems to be its main demographic; I've known a couple of people who have discovered it who just think it's a clever webcomic.
