one week til i leave for the holidays.
do you guys do anything to prepare for falling off the wagon? extra workouts or calorie restriction?
― tehresa, Monday, 14 December 2009 21:02 (fifteen years ago)
I'm not dranking--does that count for anything?
― quincie, Monday, 14 December 2009 21:04 (fifteen years ago)
yes!
i had some drinks at saturday party. i also not-so-secretly ate some cheese. it was good. i have no regrets. then i made latkes on sunday. now i am back in the good habits but i know it's all gonna get wrecked in 1 week and i am scared :(
― tehresa, Monday, 14 December 2009 21:06 (fifteen years ago)
Don't be scared--it is just a temporary indulgence, no harm will come!
― quincie, Monday, 14 December 2009 21:07 (fifteen years ago)
ditto -- don't be scared. just be moderate and don't worry. i believe that the worrying is worse for you (and more likely to cause psychological stress) than the extra calories.
― figgy pudding (La Lechera), Monday, 14 December 2009 21:08 (fifteen years ago)
i am running diligently this week too because of my 5k (lol!) on sat.
my plans for when i am home:
― tehresa, Monday, 14 December 2009 21:09 (fifteen years ago)
no, it's not
― jazzgasms (Mr. Que), Monday, 14 December 2009 21:10 (fifteen years ago)
i have just worked v v hard in the past few months and i don't want to blow it all in 2 weeks, you know?btw also sefap gonna wipe me out, totally.
― tehresa, Monday, 14 December 2009 21:10 (fifteen years ago)
It seems like you'll probably only enjoy the indulgences for a few days, and then your body will probably feel kind of gross if you indulge too much. At which point it won't feel that difficult to decline more non-NN foods? Your real problem might be getting your mom to stock whey protein! Oh haha you already went there.
― WHY DON'T YOU JUST LICK THE BUS DIRECTLY (Laurel), Monday, 14 December 2009 21:10 (fifteen years ago)
the problem is i know she'll come home with some weird wheat-containing whey and soy blend bc she never listens (lol this makes me sound bitchy and spoiled).xpost
― tehresa, Monday, 14 December 2009 21:11 (fifteen years ago)
no, that doesn't make you sound bitchy. i have a mom too she is the same whey!

― tehresa, Monday, 14 December 2009 21:13 (fifteen years ago)
hey it is impossible to ruin everything in 2 weekscutty has made u paranoid in my opinion
― harbl, Monday, 14 December 2009 23:29 (fifteen years ago)
If you are that paranoid mebbe the parents wld not mind if you made a stop on the way to their pad for a container of your preferred whey protein?
― mascara and ties (Abbott), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 00:23 (fifteen years ago)
Not sure what the family dynamic is (i.e. will they make you feel guilty for not indulging), but maybe you can make some NN recipes, and then everyone wins.
― Virginia Plain, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 01:40 (fifteen years ago)
it's not cutty making me paranoid, it's my own fear of losing control over things.i discussed whey proteins with my mother. lol. she was concerned about finding it. v sweet. i think they would be fine w/ me making nn recipes, but then they would probably try to doctor them by adding butter or cheese haw.
― tehresa, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 01:51 (fifteen years ago)
after retuning my body/taste buds eating heavy/rich things makes me feel gross - I think your built-in defense mechanisms will help protect you
― 囧 (dyao), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 02:24 (fifteen years ago)
kinda counting on that!
anyway, i want this thread to be here for anyone who goes home for holidays or to parties or whatever and needs a little encouragement or whatever :)
― tehresa, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 02:40 (fifteen years ago)
if they put butter and cheese on your nn recipes, i hope they do it after you're done so you can have your portion as you like it!
i'm going to visit family in 3 different states for 2 weeks, i think it'll mess up my nice lifestyle equilibrium too. i'm actually finding that my "built-in defense mechanisms" are working well food wise (had a little wine and sweets this weekend, but no interest in overindulging like would've a year ago), but lots of hours spent in the car and not knowing the areas is really going to mess with my running.
― Maria, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 03:55 (fifteen years ago)
yeah. my parents' area has like, NO sidewalks and people drive like crazies :(
― tehresa, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 04:18 (fifteen years ago)

― ljubljana, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 04:25 (fifteen years ago)
who says you can't?we will SUPPORT you on this here support thread :)
― tehresa, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 05:15 (fifteen years ago)
also, you could do modifications (like change the proportions of vegetables to simple carbs on your plate, reduce but not eliminate bread, pasta, etc) instead of hardcore restrictions if you think it would cause too much trouble for your family, or just be too hard to do all at once. i mean that's not very nazi but it works for me.
― Maria, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 05:23 (fifteen years ago)
No-one says I can't, I'm just not doing it. Mostly because too stressed and food = my equivalent of smoking, crack, drink, meaningless sex, tics etc. Also excellent, sound reasoning along lines of 'you are not doing your job well enough so you don't deserve to cook'.
Modifications are the way forward. Not perfection. Just doing more of the right thing.
Over the holidays...

its too cold to do outside exercise, so i did some measly pushups and then gave up. Oh well, at least I didn't eat too badly yesterday, other than apple pie+custard fo' dessert.
― SORRY ASS IMPRESSIONS (a hoy hoy), Saturday, 26 December 2009 08:39 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah Sam what's up with this weather!? It's too damn cold over here right now. Didn't actually eat too badly yesterday either. Christmas dinner but no second helpings and only a sm bit of chocolate for dessert.

― SORRY ASS IMPRESSIONS (a hoy hoy), Saturday, 26 December 2009 09:42 (fifteen years ago)
i've been running a lot (not much else to do!), but the sheer quantity and variety of food here, plus alcohol, has totally overcome my built-in defense mechanisms. will figure out in a few days if i'm just bloated or have actually managed to gain four pounds in a week. my dad said "wow, that shows that you really must eat well in pvd. and we must really eat badly here." which is sort of true, so when i go back home i'll lose whatever i gained pretty fast, but still, WHOA.
― Maria, Saturday, 26 December 2009 13:09 (fifteen years ago)

still looking/feeling good. ah.

Obv I am not a NN but I'm trying to make my family eat more vegetables. So far, half are okay with it and half are resisting. Broccoli despised by at least one family member, and the dish with spinach is being avoided.

We kind of had a nutritional X-mas dinner: roast beef, brussel sprouts, potatoes and kale, and cauliflower.
I've been eating bagels, cream cheese, lox, and rugelah; we gave away our chocolate babka.

― welcome to gudbergur (harbl), Wednesday, 30 December 2009 05:31 (fifteen years ago)
hmm well it was something like:
rice vermicellirice paper rollsscallionscarrots or cucumber or bothlettuce (green kind not iceberg)cilantro
basically the rice vermicelli forms the base of the roll, and you supplement it with whatever else you feel like. for the dipping sauce, I always cheat and use hoisin sauce with crumbled up peanuts. you submerge the rice paper roll in warm water to soften it (it comes all dried out) and then pat it dry and make your roll. pro tip: use two rice paper rolls instead of one to form a sturdier wrap, as it is pretty delicate and prone to tearing.
― =皿= (dyao), Wednesday, 30 December 2009 05:36 (fifteen years ago)
oh yeah you also put shrimp and/or pork pate in it but I assume we are being NN here
Summer rolls sounds better than sushi!
― yo gabba gabbneb (tehresa), Wednesday, 30 December 2009 18:36 (fifteen years ago)
omg dolmades yes. imo they are best just stuffed with rice but they're still mostly grape leaves.
seems i've gained more like 1-2 lbs, not 4, over the last couple weeks. phew, i'm actually pretty cool with that.
― Maria, Wednesday, 30 December 2009 18:40 (fifteen years ago)
well they do have rice but the amount is smaller than people think. if you overstuff them you can't roll them! and no one (except me :() would want to eat enough of them to get even a full serving of rice. it's stretched out a bunch by the onions and herbs too.
― welcome to gudbergur (harbl), Wednesday, 30 December 2009 18:42 (fifteen years ago)
yeah i personally would not worry about it (even though i would also want to eat that many, i would probably try to save some for other people!) but i dunno how strict everyone is

that is v. close to my mom's recipe. also mediterranean style dips that you can put out with vegetables as well as crackers or breads might work - eggplant or spinach pureed w/garlic, oil, & a flavorful pepper, or hummus, or bean & walnut pate with paprika, for instance.
― Maria, Wednesday, 30 December 2009 19:53 (fifteen years ago)
My family thought I looked a bit leaner, and wondered what sort of program I was following. They then proceeded to try and fatten me up. Thankfully I am back out of their clutches now.

uuuugh i spent the last weekend visiting relatives and eating mediocre-to-gross desserts like three times a day because my other immediate family members weren't and i didn't want the relatives who cooked them to feel bad. and now my mom's all "are you anorexic? why aren't you eating fast food dinner on the road?" after this. GROSS.
