I am also surprised by the Gordon-Levitt nod, if only because it wasn't for "G.I. Joe".

On the tv side, I guess Breaking Bad is completely off their radar.

This is the organization that awarded Pia Zadora a Golden Globe, so nothing they do could surprise me.

james cameron making the audience applaud itself - twice! - was the height of something or other. he is their master. even saying that they were afraid to play music to usher him off! he knows who the king of the world is.

sandra bullock also sounded like such a company gal. like she was giving a speech at a trade show. which is fine, i guess. she's all business.

i'm so sick of ironic self-promotion. was there anyone last night who didn't half-jokingly mention their upcoming tv show/dvd boxset/yellow submarine re-release?

yeah, that joke feels pretty tired.

and the freakin shutter island trailer tacked on to the end of the otherwise nice martin scorsese montage felt soooo crass.

his speech was awesome though. i love that he just talked about cecil b demille. how often do award winners actually even acknowledge who the award was named for, let alone give a little lecture about them?

even the tribute to scorsese ended with a big fat trailer for his new movie.

i was happy about the demille thing too. it made me happy in a way that all the haiti talk didn't.

ya i didnt watch all of the show but i thought the same thing. pete docter's acceptance speech was also pretty good

um, not that haiti talk should make me happy, just that all the haiti talk was covered in guilt and squirming. "so happy to win! but you know, elsewhere in the world..."

Bullock's acceptance speech was the best thing she's ever performed. Better than Bridges'!

Also: the applause for Avatar was polite.

they should have just agreed to have one haiti spokesman and maybe a moment of silence and then banned all half-assed mentions to it in speeches. we get it. yer rich and the world sucks. we know. show us yer boobs.

jeff bridges also sounded like such a company cat! i mean, he is. but he sounded like a retiring CEO. thanking the stand-in who has worked with him for 60 movies. 60 movies! for real? does he live behind jeff's house? does jeff's wife try out new clothes on him? you could use a stand-in for lots of things. jury duty, etc...

For Tron the stand-in allowed himself to be digitized for the good of the film's light-tests.

i just watched the haneke speech on youtube; the only reaction shot of a receptive european they could come up with was a five seconds of arnold schwarzenegger looking nonplussed

i thought cutting to arnold was inspired.

that was the only moment of audience response until haneke said 'children' and lots of actors began clapping instinctively

I can't stop saying "AVADAH" since seeing Arnold last night.

A lot of the audience looked like they were in a pretty bad mood. I think maybe some of Ricky Gervais' barbs put people off? There was one joke about Paul McCartney's divorce that seemed kind of harsh.

Also, was there a reason why they focused on McCartney like a million times during the broadcast?

only macca could get away with mentioning drugs like that. i mean he practically invented sneaking drug referemces into the mainstream anyway so hats off to him.

2009: totally avatarded

Had a pool going w/some friends and won $$$ after guessing nearly every winner w/the exception of Avatar & Cameron. I was really betting (and hoping) that Katherine Bigelow & co. were going to clean up like they did at the Critic's Choice.

What an ugly array of costumes on the red carpet this year.

I didn't realize it was a scarf until I saw a clip the next day -- it was like some ugly ass 80s Doctor Who wardrobe reject.
