much love to bette and gloria, but i'm gonna stick with the academy on this one. judy holliday is funny and adorable, but she also gives the story more oomph than it probably deserves -- she makes it not just the celebration of education and democracy and all that flag-waving stuff that it's trying to be, but also a convincing portrait of intellectual liberation. it's a much deeper performance than the script necessarily calls for.
