what u think i steen for to push a crawfish? (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 07:17 (fifteen years ago)

squidbillies maybe relies too much on squick factor so home movies

I like a lot of these, but Robot Chicken consistently makes me lol.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 07:40 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, i think Venture might take this by default. if only sealab and aqua teen stopped before the end of their second seasons. even Brak Show probably went on too long.

i'll rep for first few seasons of aqua teen too

krampus activities (latebloomer), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 08:12 (fifteen years ago)

Tim And Eric. I'm still baffled that other people seem to enjoy it, as it seems to be specially formulated for the most absurd recesses of my sense of humor (i.e. stuff that should not be funny to anyone but me because it doesn't seem in any way to be actively, objectively funny).

Zoo Snickers (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 12:18 (fifteen years ago)

I guess 'not actively, objectively funny' describes, like, 95% of the stuff on Adult Swim, though. They're all niche programs for people with different strange senses of humor (which may or may not be induced by different levels/types of intoxication).

Which is also to say: I don't get high, so I don't get 95% of the stuff on Adult Swim.

Zoo Snickers (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 12:22 (fifteen years ago)

Also: loved Cartoon Planet, liked Home Movies pretty okay, found Perfect Hair Forever strangely hilarious when my brothers and I stumbled upon it while getting drunk on eggnog two Christmases ago (despite not knowing jack squat about anime and thusly probably not getting most of the jokes). Slowly giving Metalocalypse and Venture Bros. a shot, but not really sold yet. ATHF is fleetingly funny in the way that anything is when you constantly throw shit at the wall to see what sticks. It's like the animated version of watching random improv troupes. And fucking Xavier gave me fucking seizures and a fucking brain tumor. I don't know if that's good or bad.

Zoo Snickers (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 12:28 (fifteen years ago)

Home Movies is the best, but as above for when I first saw Xavier. It has SOMTHING amazing abt it, which I couldn't say for ATHF

Space Ghost Coast to Coast 1994–2004; 2006–present
Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law 2000–2007
Sealab 2021 2000–2005

... but more to the point, anything but fucking Robot Chicken.

love: Venture Bros, Home Movies
like: Sealab, Space Ghost, Cartoon Planet
have laughed at but don't particularly feel much affection for: Aqua Teen, Robot Chicken, the Brak Show, Harvey Birdman
watched once or twice, didn't really see the appeal of: Frisky Dingo, Metalocalypse, Boondocks, Stroker and Hoop, Squidbillies
hate: Tim and Eric/Tom Goes To The Mayor
no idea about most of the rest

Restless Genital Syndrome (HI DERE), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 17:21 (fifteen years ago)

Space Ghost by a huge margin. Most of this is crap.

I have a feeling that most people fail to distinguish Space Ghost from Cartoon Planet. Since they are in many ways the same show, aside from the presence/absence of celebrity interviews/Brak. SG was okay, but I feel like most of the really funny stuff featuring the SG cast was actually featured on Cartoon Planet.

Zoo Snickers (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 17:26 (fifteen years ago)

moral orel is on some real deal nihilism-disguised-as-comedy trip that i feel separates it from the rest somehow.

there are some "cartoon planet" bits that still make me lol from memory, though.

strongohulkingtonsghost, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 17:27 (fifteen years ago)

^^ totally, Cartoon Planet was way better (xpost)

defend the indefensible: JUSTIN BIEBER, MAN (some dude), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 17:27 (fifteen years ago)

seriously if you dont laugh at brak singing "macarthur park," you are an undead soul wandering the earth, unconsciously lamenting the loss of your humanity.

strongohulkingtonsghost, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 17:28 (fifteen years ago)

Moral Orel is a super-strong contender IMO and the only other show on here I would consider top-5 material

xp: okay I might be conflating Space Ghost with Cartoon Planet

home movies, but i have fond memories of the first season or two of most of these (space ghost/cartoon planet [don't really know the diff, sorry], sealab, aqua teen, harvey birdman).

i'm not usually in a mood to watch tim & eric but it can be pretty next level at times.

hey trader joe's! i've got the new steely dan. (Jordan), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

I like that the Sealab folks took what they learned from there and created a series with a very similar feel with the added bonus of a running narrative in Frisky Dingo.

also that fucking penguin kills me

I like the interviews on Space Ghost more than Brak on Cartoon Planet. Brak's okay, but Space Ghost CtC was - at its best - genius.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

sealab was pretty great until harry whatshisname died, after which it just feels like that awkward newsradio post hartman vibe where you can tell the writers and cast are kinda bummed out and not feeling it.

These are my faves out of these shows, roughly in order. I am cheating by listing 11 because I apparently can't in my memory separate out Space Ghost from Cartoon Planet.

Restless Genital Syndrome (HI DERE), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 17:41 (fifteen years ago)

Hint: Cartoon Planet is the one that is criminally unavailable on DVD. Also, it had lots of songs.

Zoo Snickers (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 17:46 (fifteen years ago)

i liked Boondocks alright as a comic but the show is pretty iffy imo, Regina King's voices (ok, voice) for the kids is terrible and ruins it for me.

Like seriously, if you had asked me what the funniest thing in the world would be to a Southern-raised debutante-leaning woman with an Ivy League education, my answer would have been nowhere near "a talking ass that indiscriminately shoots people with a revolver" and I would have lost big on Final Jeopardy.

Superjail deserves at least some sort of mention. i mean, it's not particularly funny and almost all of the characters are irritating, but the animation is gnarly and 90% of the show is just rapid-fire complete bloody carnage. i've got a weird kind of respect for it.

circa1916, Thursday, 17 December 2009 22:51 (fifteen years ago)

kind of agree with that, almost wish they'd run that show without a script. it's just dumb, but it has the kind of manic energy that you'd expect from a damaged eight year old

I'm sad that there seem to be a lot of AS shows I havent seen - I dont have cable (do we get AS on foxtel, mongrels?) so I've had to rely on youtube and dvds.

Love:
Tim & Eric
Brak Show
Harvey Birdman
Metalocalypse
Space Ghost (I guess)

Have not seem most of the rest! (drinky crow on YT aside). ATHF did nothing for me as I said on t'other thread.

I cant decide what to choose. I love Tim and Eric for stupid fart joke stoner humour but I love the Brak show for its childlike absurdity.

i used to love harvey birdman especially the first season or so, though i watched a random episode recently and it wasn't as funny as i remember. in fact most of these are pretty terrible in retrospect even though i loved them back in highschool.

space ghost and tim&eric both transcend most of the rest of these though not in the same way.

superjail knows its aesthetic and runs with it, bearing ample fruit. I love it for the same reasons that I love finnegans wake or youtube vids of kids trying to grind some sick rail in front of the post office in nowheresville, kansas

but it's also, as far as the jokes go, one of the most smartly-written TV shows I've ever seen, up there with arrested development & co.

millivanillimillenary (Trayce), Friday, 15 January 2010 02:14 (fifteen years ago)

several xps: Metalocalypse had a terrible pilot (just confirmed this again seeing it a few weeks ago) which made me not want to give it a chance. But then I caught more and more of it and by the end of the first season I was totally hooked, it's hilarious - I guess it took them a few eps to get back to the Home Movies-style dialogue pacing. Still though, VB had to get my vote.

Nhex, Friday, 15 January 2010 03:19 (fifteen years ago)
