Maybe I'm missing a joke here... but Greening's not American?

William Bloody Swygart, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 19:07 (fifteen years ago)

Jonathan Greening (born Scarborough) 's Honours:
UEFA Champions League: 1999
Football League Championship: 2008

Anyway, I vote Tim Howard.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 19:13 (fifteen years ago)

I have no fucking clue who Greening is.

This would be awesome if it was "the best white American in the Football League".

everyone stop (dan m), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 22:00 (fifteen years ago)

Friedel = legend

everyone stop (dan m), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 22:00 (fifteen years ago)

You forgot Guzan, even if his only PL appearance was to let in a few goals to Liverpool after Friedel got sent off

Friedel is the best American

MPx4A, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 22:04 (fifteen years ago)

I have no fucking clue who Greening is.

One of the Man United youngsters/reserves from the turn of the century who got a reasonable number of first team games, but ultimately didn't make the grade (see also Ugly Luke Chadwick). Think he was at Middlesbrough for a while. Nothing remotely American about him.

FIFA Brutish & Short (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 22:05 (fifteen years ago)

It's been nice to see Friedel getting some recognition in various 'decade XI' lists.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 22:05 (fifteen years ago)

why are there so many american goaltenders?

Champions League winner 1999 apparently xp (see also: David May, Raymond van der Guow)

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 22:07 (fifteen years ago)

why are there so many american goaltenders?

We grow 'em big + every kid plays games with lots of catching when growing up are the reasons I've heard bandied about the most.

What I want to know is which of them (MLS & lower-level Euro leagues too) would be the best field player.

everyone stop (dan m), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 22:11 (fifteen years ago)

friedel easy.

how d'you mean the best field player dan? best outfield player in that list is dempsey in a walk.

stop grieving, it's only a chicken (darraghmac), Thursday, 17 December 2009 00:45 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, I meant best gk as an outfield player!

btw Lando just re-upped with the Galaxy until 2013 but is still supposedly going to Everton on loan... weird

everyone stop (dan m), Thursday, 17 December 2009 01:03 (fifteen years ago)

And what about Boaz Myhill?

everyone stop (dan m), Thursday, 17 December 2009 01:06 (fifteen years ago)

donovan wants to stay fit for the world cup, i think- much like beckham's 6 month deals with AC milan.

boaz myhill ain't no brad friedel or tim howard, both easily up amongst the best in the premier league right now.

stop grieving, it's only a chicken (darraghmac), Thursday, 17 December 2009 01:14 (fifteen years ago)

Myhill's not that American, think you relinquish most of your claim to American-ness if you spend that much time living in Oswestry

MPx4A, Thursday, 17 December 2009 01:28 (fifteen years ago)

to my knowledge, Friedel is the only one of these to be mentioned in a Half Man Half Biscuit song, ergo he's made it. Him.

moron oil (Gukbe), Thursday, 17 December 2009 01:31 (fifteen years ago)

Friedel started as a forward and has scored an actual goal, but he'd be too old to cut it outfield nowadays; I tend to assume Tim Howard's aptitude in goal stems from his weird Tourettes thing that makes him want to touch stuff, so he'd maybe be not so good outfield either

MPx4A, Thursday, 17 December 2009 01:31 (fifteen years ago)

obv dempsey because he is the only famous person i vaguely resemble

American goaltenders >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> English goalkeepers

Sonny Uplands (Tom D.), Thursday, 17 December 2009 11:27 (fifteen years ago)

Invariably German-Americans, these goalies

Sonny Uplands (Tom D.), Thursday, 17 December 2009 11:28 (fifteen years ago)

Clearly Friedel with Dempsey the best outfield player. Shall we do a full list of American PL players?

Clint Dempsey
Jonathan Spector
Brad Friedel
Marcus Hahnemann
Jozy Altidore
Tim Howard
Boaz Myhill (maybe)

Is that it? Surely not.

Sorry whut?

Oh haha yeah, his accent! I was commenting on how amazing his English is last night. He's only been in England what, two years? Clearly a smart guy.

Chris in Belfast, Thursday, 17 December 2009 11:43 (fifteen years ago)

think Guzan and Eddie Johnson are your lot, other than those

MPx4A, Thursday, 17 December 2009 11:45 (fifteen years ago)

Chris - you've missed Jonathon Greening and Luke Chadwick off that list.

FIFA Brutish & Short (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Thursday, 17 December 2009 11:49 (fifteen years ago)

Fulham were fielding five at a time a couple of years back, none of whom I think were Dempsey or Spector - I know Hero McBride is tearing things up in MLS these days, but where have the others gone?

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 17 December 2009 12:45 (fifteen years ago)

Aye, Bocanegra has left.

think Guzan and Eddie Johnson are your lot, other than those

― MPx4A, Thursday, 17 December 2009 11:45 (2 hours ago) Bookmark

Of course. E Johnson is a bit of a forgotten man now.

Chris in Belfast, Thursday, 17 December 2009 13:47 (fifteen years ago)

there are a couple americans in the colaship and a couple im the spl, but as far as epl goes, i think you've mentioned everyone.

Surely someone here follows Leeds? Mike Grella what? They'll be back in teh PL in no time.

:D

Oh I read that Watford is fucked financially. Hopefully that means Jay Demerit gets a bump up in a transfer.

everyone stop (dan m), Friday, 18 December 2009 00:07 (fifteen years ago)

He seems a decent bloke. I like that he started his career as if he was looking for a bar job - he originally moved over here to play for Southall for £40 a week.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 18 December 2009 08:44 (fifteen years ago)

holden might go to blackburn in january. if so add (a good) one to the list

jergins, Friday, 18 December 2009 08:49 (fifteen years ago)

Friedel for looking like Tom Waits/Ron Pearlman/an egg with a dog's face.

It looks like MLS is flailing around to keep some of the better players from leaving for the EPL or other Euro leagues. They gave Donovan a new contract worth millions + they also made a big offer to Holden. Could be a good thing for the league in the long run if they can keep some of the better domestic players at home, but I'm wondering if/how the quailty of the league will advance (or regress?)

everyone stop (dan m), Friday, 18 December 2009 16:24 (fifteen years ago)

Lando's loan move just got confirmed, so the challops opinion would be that he is now the best.

everyone stop (dan m), Friday, 18 December 2009 17:56 (fifteen years ago)

remains to be seen- he'll be doing well to prove himself ahead of dempsey in the premier league.

stop grieving, it's only a chicken (darraghmac), Friday, 18 December 2009 17:59 (fifteen years ago)

I'm surprised Donovan's had such trouble establishing himself overseas - he's looked a pretty top player whenever I've seen him for the US

Ismael Klata, Friday, 18 December 2009 18:14 (fifteen years ago)

I'm finding it hard to pick between Friedel and Dempsey but going for Dempsey becuz he's an outfield player.

cajunsunday, Friday, 18 December 2009 21:10 (fifteen years ago)

"Klinsmann's only idea for strengthening the sqaud in January was Landon Donovan," said Uli Hoeness. "Hermann Gerland [the youth team coach] told me the guy wasn't fit to play for his reserves."
