Robert Zemeckis, Ivan Reitman, John Landis - who's done the least amount of damage to their early career?

The same guys who directed Back To The Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Stripes, Ghostbusters, Animal House, and An American Werewolf in London were also responsible for Forrest Gump, Polar Express, Six Days Seven Nights, Evolution, The Stupids and Blues Brother 2000.

Which director (if any) has weathered the best or is it just a three-way tie for last?

reitman imo, his movies seem inoffensively bad at least.

It's not Zemeckis for sure.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 22:10 (fifteen years ago)

Landis. His career was the least distinguished to begin with.

queen frostine (Eric H.), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 22:14 (fifteen years ago)

anyone who had anything to do with Coming to America is pretty fucking distinguished in my book.

mizzell, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 22:16 (fifteen years ago)

Wow. As directors, Reitman and Landis have made pretty much nothing but total shit for 20 years, while Zemeckis has gone further and further up his CGI butt (he's always been something of a sub-Spielberg hack, tho). But as a producer, Reitman's done some inoffensive work, so ... Reitman?

The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977)
National Lampoon's Animal House (1978)
The Blues Brothers (1980)
An American Werewolf in London (1981)
Trading Places (1983)
Into the Night (1985)
Spies Like Us (1985)
¡Three Amigos! (1986)
Coming to America (1988)

This is a better run than either of the other two has, imo. though i haven't seen Into the Night.

re: 'roger rabbit 2'

in April 2009, Zemeckis revealed he was still interested.[42] It is said that the original writers, Jeffrey Price and Peter S. Seaman are currently writing a new script for the project. It is also said that the cartoon characters will be in traditional 2D, while the rest will be in MoCap.

The guy who did Used Cars will never see his legacy tarnished.

Hell is other people. In an ILE film forum. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 22:32 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think Ivan Reitman or John Landis had such great early careers to begin with. And Zemeckis is the only one capable of moments of genius, esp. this decade (almost all of Cast Away, the Ghost of Christmas Past portion of A Christmas Carol). I guess I prefer Landis' early career slightly more than Reitman's cuz I dig the musical numbers in The Blues Brothers. So Landis it is.

Despite my intermittent love for Zemeckis, I still don't get Used Cars. What am I missing?

Oh wait! Least amount. Well, then I guess Zemeckis cuz I think he's still great this decade.

Into the Night is a funny/weird movie and belongs to that peculiar 80s subgenre wherein hapless protagonists endure a strange night in the city (see also: Night Shift, After Hours)

You barely get away with that because his 3D-up-the-ass retconning of Yellow Submarine won't be out until 2012.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 23:04 (fifteen years ago)

So the disaster movie was right.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 23:05 (fifteen years ago)

Forrest Gump

I still object to this being classified as an embarrassment.

Animal House + Amer Werewolf + Trading Places > Reitman's hits

(among IR's, Legal Eagles is better than the Murray-Ramis movies)

I think I voted for Zemeckis in this – I saw Beowulf the other night & now wish I cld take it back.

Zemeckis's left turn into weirdo capture animation really does tarnish his legacy.

five years pass...

Article is WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY too fucking long and I stopped reading before they ever got to a comparison between the movie 2015 and the real one. Not gonna waste my entire 2015 reading this poorly written and overly obnoxiously drawn out article.
