lesbianism is way less of a stigma but big-ups to them too
(and I'm pretty feminist, but this is undoubtedly true)
― dyao know what i mean (acoleuthic), Saturday, 19 December 2009 08:45 (fifteen years ago)
gay or lezza, they deserve a high five. fuck what millwall fans (or their many equivilents across the globe) think.

Tentatively suggesting a de-indexing on this thread before the lawyers of some very rich people start rubbing their hands in glee.
― ailsa, Saturday, 19 December 2009 09:34 (fifteen years ago)
this is a thread about outed gays, not gay speculation
(altho the title cd do with alteration)
― dyao know what i mean (acoleuthic), Saturday, 19 December 2009 09:36 (fifteen years ago)
ok yes sorry the dude known for putting mobile phones up his bottom is not a homosexual.

dude as somebody studying libel law i can confirm that ur doing urself 0 favours
― dyao know what i mean (acoleuthic), Saturday, 19 December 2009 09:54 (fifteen years ago)
Also, yeah, threads NEVER get derailed ever.
― ailsa, Saturday, 19 December 2009 09:54 (fifteen years ago)
I'm not sure the mere suggestion is libellous any more, actually - the test for libel is something like 'would it lower one's reputation in the minds of right-thinking people?', and I reckon right-thinking people have moved on in the last few years.
It'd be better not to be the test case though, so agree with the title change (even though Sam is obviously meaning that they can't admit it because they aren't). A quick google for 'libel', 'gay' and 'england' reveals that there is one litigious fellow in particular whom it might be safer not to mention.
― Ismael Klata, Saturday, 19 December 2009 10:01 (fifteen years ago)
also right thinking ppl don't read ilx
― jabba hands, Saturday, 19 December 2009 10:03 (fifteen years ago)
Hence de-indexing. I reckon a "lol gays in sport" thread might be like a fucking batsignal to idiots with access to google.
― ailsa, Saturday, 19 December 2009 10:06 (fifteen years ago)
do people on message boards often get sued for libel?
― "can´t you be just normal?? be normal just once!" (a hoy hoy), Saturday, 19 December 2009 10:06 (fifteen years ago)
it's not 'lol', it's 'wahey wd'
― dyao know what i mean (acoleuthic), Saturday, 19 December 2009 10:07 (fifteen years ago)
its not a lol gays in sport thread. or it wasnt supposed to be. its a yay gays in sport.
― "can´t you be just normal?? be normal just once!" (a hoy hoy), Saturday, 19 December 2009 10:07 (fifteen years ago)
It's happened once or twice - there was a case where a contributor to a financial message board (i.e. not just the board itself) got collared for spreading rumours about (I think) a company's solvency. The point is that if you post here you're still publishing, even if it's really small-scale.
― Ismael Klata, Saturday, 19 December 2009 10:10 (fifteen years ago)
well then change it. btw i love fatty sol for his playing ability and the many spurs lols, dont give a toss about certain rumours.
― "can´t you be just normal?? be normal just once!" (a hoy hoy), Saturday, 19 December 2009 10:20 (fifteen years ago)
I know it's "wahey wd", but, y'know, not everyone sees it like that, or else Gareth Thomas coming out wouldn't be a big deal. I was just thinking about bolting the door shut before people googling come across this thread and contribute in a less well-reasoned manner, especially given the title...oh, never mind, I'm just being over-sensitive (have seen this happen on another board, where a "talk about celebrities who are gay" turned into a "name-celebrities-you-assume-are-hiding-in-the-closet" thread). Was just a suggestion.
― ailsa, Saturday, 19 December 2009 10:21 (fifteen years ago)
btw the entire millwall squad is gay
― dyao know what i mean (acoleuthic), Saturday, 19 December 2009 10:22 (fifteen years ago)
Oh, and wahey wd Gareth Thomas, obviously. It's shit that it's still a thing though.
― ailsa, Saturday, 19 December 2009 10:22 (fifteen years ago)
yeah its shit that its still a thing. wd means well done, right?
― "can´t you be just normal?? be normal just once!" (a hoy hoy), Saturday, 19 December 2009 10:23 (fifteen years ago)
yeah. the one problem with this kind of thread is that it does turn homosexuality into something akin to a zoo. 'we got another one! ooh isn't it cute'. shouldn't need this thread, imo
― dyao know what i mean (acoleuthic), Saturday, 19 December 2009 10:24 (fifteen years ago)
yeah but we also shouldn't be in a position where the only known homosexual footballer killed himself.
― "can´t you be just normal?? be normal just once!" (a hoy hoy), Saturday, 19 December 2009 10:27 (fifteen years ago)
true, which is why i'm pro this thread for now.
― dyao know what i mean (acoleuthic), Saturday, 19 December 2009 10:30 (fifteen years ago)

I think the fact that the first high-profile gay in football was a really troubled individual with problems outwith his sexuality didn't really help anything think "you know what, I'll be the next one", because I suspect there are way more people than I want to think there are who would be all "lol you just like Justin Fashanu".

The cancellation of the Football Foundation's future funding of community projects, revealed here yesterday, has already had a negative impact on grass-roots issues in football. The Gay Football Supporters Network has been told that the base funding it was expecting to receive from the foundation's budgets, which would have permitted it to incorporate formally as a charity, will now not be available. After football's clumsy handling of an anti-homophobia video campaign that was postponed in February, that is a second major setback to the game's gay community in recent months.Last year four fans were given three-year banning orders and five others were handed police cautions for homophobic chanting at Sol Campbell. With the Football Association and Premier League cutting their contributions to the foundation by £4m a year – although the government remains committed to the full £15m – the want of £80,000 a year in grant funding from somewhere in football means gay players' sole defender remains the publicist Max Clifford.

Well if ever there was a time for this to be announced, it would be the night of Sol coming back to Spurs in an Arsenal shirt. ffs fa.

Asked if he had ever encountered a gay footballer, he replied: "No. Fortunately, only healthy people play football."
The gay groups Kontra and Iskorak have now said via their websites that they will sue Markovic in Croatia and report him to Uefa, saying his remarks violate Croatian and international laws.
Markovic apologised for his comments today, saying that he was "sorry for a clumsy interpretation. It was not my intention whatsoever to insult or hurt anyone. I have nothing against members of any minority, least of all against those of same-sex orientation."

Textbook example of a thread title that destroys the good intentions of the thread itself. Yeah I'm going to change it.
― Matt DC, Monday, 28 February 2011 10:53 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah thread title a bit off, even if those two are gay then I hardly think mocking the fact they're closeted sits well. Speculation about people's sexuality isn't good for anyone.
