Is this only for movies from 2010 or can we talk about 2009 stuff here?
My most recent films were La Danse, 35 Rhums, and Bad Lieutenant 2.

erm, your call? I think the Denis stuff probably belongs in Detrius 2009? Or is that still in theaters? Bad Lietenant and La Danse are opening here in 2010, so i think they're fair game.

I thought La Danse was really excellent. Probably the only ballet documentary ever to mention The X-Men and Edward Scissorhands, or to include shots of an industrial-grade baguette cutter.

So this year at Sundance, we have:
http://www.daemonsmovies.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/howl_jamesfranco_aarontveit.jpgHOWLOpening Night at Sundance, fiction film debut from solid documentary directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (both directed Celluloid Closet, Epstein also did Times of Harvey Milk)Stars James Franco, Mary Louise Parker, Jon Hamm, Jeff Daniels, David Strathairn, etc."It's San Francisco in 1957, and an American masterpiece is put on trial. Howl, the film, recounts this dark moment using three interwoven threads: the tumultuous life events that led a young Allen Ginsberg to find his true voice as an artist, society's reaction (the obscenity trial), and mind-expanding animation that echoes the startling originality of the poem itself. All three coalesce in a genre-bending hybrid that brilliantly captures a pivotal moment-the birth of a counterculture. "

^^^^would be so fucking cool if it wasn't based around the success of 'paranormal activity' and was just a chance of giving some potentially exciting storytellers their first budget with no financial expectations.
― eagle tears was a popular drink and it still is (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 27 December 2009 00:01 (fifteen years ago)
People familiar with the studio's plans say some of the movies may end up serving as "calling cards" -- a showcase of a novice director's storytelling talent for a future project. A handful of films may contain enough good ideas to merit a bigger-budget remake. And another group may rise to the top of the heap, getting a theatrical release.
ha ok maybe i should read a whole article instead of getting all smh at the start of it. bet it still ends up all smh instead of super fucking great for storytelling tho

Paramount is not the first big studio to try to play in a smaller sandbox. Twentieth Century Fox launched (and recently closed) Fox Atomic, a division dedicated to genre films that struggled with such releases as "Turistas" and "Jennifer's Body." Universal Studios also just exited the business, selling its Rogue Pictures ("Doomsday," "The Return") to Ryan Kavanaugh's Relativity Media.
LA Times doesn't realize that 20x100k/year is less than the budget of any single movie released by Rogue or Atomic?

Youth in Revolt is OK, but nothing special beyond Cera as Francois (which there isn't enough of). Ideally, they'd have cast some other, younger kid as the lead, and kept Cera relegated to that capacity.

― y tu mama ambien (Tape Store), Monday, 4 January 2010 07:48 (fifteen years ago)
That's obv not v helpful to anyone. So my brief thoughts:
October Country (which I believe opens in NYC mid-February???) is by far the most accessible of all these and the one I'd most recommend. It's a really beautifully textured film about a year in the life of a troubled but lovable upstate NY family. Gentle but very moving, with some really fantastic imagery. A friend compared its feel to Gus Van Sant, which makes some sense to me.
I expect the formalists to fall in love with Sweetgrass (the trailer is fairly representative, except the film is much slower, lots of long gorgeously composed shots). Not surprised at all with the glowing reviews, but I'm very curious to how audience members react to it.
Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo is a challenging one, but I think it's incredibly exciting. The director has basically started her own little genre, which combines the Austin doc aesthetic (which is sort of like rough, chlorine-drenched beauty) and fascinating ethnobiology. Not going to be embraced by everyone, but I consider it one of the most exciting films of last year.
45365 is the Austin aesthetic applied to smalltown life in Ohio. A series of unrelated scenes from a town, shot very well, i think it adds up to a stunning portrait, though I admit others will get bored and want to leave midway. Again, I find this exciting.

Damn, SHUTTER ISLAND getting mad love at Berlin. Variety: "Expert, screw-turning narrative filmmaking put at the service of old-dark-madhouse claptrap, "Shutter Island" arguably occupies a similar place in Martin Scorsese's filmography as "The Shining" does in Stanley Kubrick's...As Kubrick did with Stephen King's novel, Scorsese uncustomarily ventures here into bestseller territory that obliges him to deliver certain expected ingredients for the mass audience and adhere to formula more than has been his nature over the years. Although "The Departed" and "Cape Fear" come close, "Shutter Island" is the film that most forces the director to walk the straight and narrow in terms of carefully and clearly telling a story; if testing himself within that discipline was his intention, this most devoted of cinema students among major American directors gets an 'A.'" http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117942168.html?categoryid=31&cs=1

girlfriend took me to two movies this weekend
1) how to train your dragon – which was way better than expected. i think it was a better version of avatar than avatar. but i hated avatar. so go figure. f/x were all right, and roger deakin's touch showed in the environmental configurations: lots of breaking rocks, smoke, subtle reflections and shades of yellow and grey. lovely animation – best CG i've seen outside of pixar, hands down.
2) girl with the dragon tattoo - which was the worst thing i've seen all year. to wit: the following is provided by way of backstory for a detective-chick who has, as are inarguably established, some 'trust issues.' these are conveyed to the audience during a series of sequences in which the protagonist's social worker decides to orally rape her before giving her money from her trust fund. this protagonist (who is supposedly autistic, but displays nothing even remotely resembling a spectrum disorder) decides to re-visit the social worker after the rape, at his apartment, at night, alone, with a hidden camera, to see if he will rape her again. he does. anally, graphically, while tying her to the bed and beating her with electrical cords and hitting her in the face. for a good two minutes of screen time, lovingly depicted. after this sequence we watch the protagonist stumble home, whimpering, before sitting down for coffee while holding her ass and moaning. oh! best part! she visits the assailant a third time, but this time she rapes him with an humongous white dildo she kicks into his asshole before tying him naked to the floor and carving 'i am a rapist and a misogynist' on his chest and making him watch the movie of his assault on her. this, mind you, is the backstory for a movie that deals predominately with nazi incest.
